Hi guys,

So as part of my college course I've just built a stereo audio amplifier using a pair of TDA2030 class AB amplifier ICs. I now need to write the report but I don't actually know how to calculate audio power output.

According to the datasheet, with 8Ω speakers and +/- 12V I should be getting 6W, but I'm using a different circuit to what they've provided.

With a 200mV 1kHz sine wave test signal at full volume (which feels pretty bloody loud, and that 200mV isn't even half of what my iPhone gives at it's peak!) the output voltage is 9V, so the voltage gain Av - calculated by 20log10(Vout/Vin) - is 33dB. That's about all I've tested, in fact it's all I could think to test (apart from the bandwidth but that doesn't seem relevant when discussing power). We haven't learned anything about testing audio equipment, it's just an electronics course so that's a bit too specialised.

So can I work out the gain from these figures or do I need to do other tests, I wonder?

Are you trying to measure gain or power output? They're two very different things.
