Do you find yourself driving conservatively during online races?

I've noticed, that when I'm online, I take corners with a much more deliberate style. I'm often a lot slower than I could be.

Anyone else?

Not really, it's normally the other way around when i'm racing online. :D

I don't abuse the track and other racers though obviously.

My friend drives like a grandma offline but a drunk guy online however I do drive more conservative online

I'm a bit more careful not to bump the other cars online but other than that I drive as fast as I can. No difference.

I'm conservative. I always try not to tap anyone, I do my best except sometimes the other drivers make it sooooo damn hard to avoid them.

I drive conservatively during online races. Mainly because I feel guilty when I knock someone off the road but I will smash into the AI any day :sly:.

I do find that since racing online I, probably intuitively, try to avoid hitting the AI too, at least less than before. ;)

I definately find I drive more conservatively, sometimes even if I'm ahead of someone and I know I break early for a particular corner, ill tap the breaks to give them a heads up. I also find I drive more aggressively if I know I'm the fastest guy on the track, as I feel frustrated if I'm not leading - if I'm not the fastest fella, I drive more carefully to gain respect of my peers haha

Also, does anybody else pull a strange face if they can forsee a tap coming up? For whatever reason I find myself pulling a face instead of breaking, somehow believing this will magically stop me! :dunce:

i try to avoid any kind of contact with other cars or the dirt. Makes me a bit conservatory from time to time, yes.
But as soon as im in the lead, im getting greedy again and start making mistakes :)

Always try to drive with care and consideration for other drivers, but unfortunately there is the odd bumps and if by any chance i do knock some off or take there place because of an incident I always concede the position back to them.

If I join a random lobby, I try to start last so I don't get rammed in turn 1. Then I just stay on the track watching the others take each other out or run off the surface. I don't win very often, but it's a lot more fun than getting stuck in the sand or slammed into a wall every race.

I tend to back off a little because the grip is so different online, so I have to change style. I also tend to back off when near other cars in the corners to avoid incidents. I think on Bob's Cool-Hot scale I'm way down in the cool zone.

I tend to drive conservatively until I know I need to push. It saves the tyres and reduces the probability of a mistake.

I am more careful of other cars, yes, but would I call myself conservative, no. Just taking other lines.

👍 The same here. Online I prefer to find myself in the grass than bump others, so I usually drive a little more conservative.

I'm far too careful online when I'm in a slower car, and bend the barriers sometimes as I'm looking in the mirror/map

Depends on the race and who I'm racing with. If they're great drivers in a clean race, I can go full tilt and give 100%. If it's lousy drivers and "clean" racing, I'll back off and let the idiots take eachother out, then pick off the rest one by one.

If it's dirty racing, then F it.

I do the same thing. I also tighten the muscles in my whole body when understeering round a sharp corner, as if it will make me suddenly gain more grip.

Regarding the original topic... I do drive differently in split-screen multiplayer, I drive slower and deviate from the racing line more because I'm trying to not crash into the other car. It's also quite hard to hear my car's engine in split-screen, so I tend to keep looking at the HUD to know when to change gear, which usually results in me losing concentration and making mistakes. :ouch:

I find my right foot gets sore from "bending the pedal", as if there is just a bit more power than 100%. Especially on time trials and timed special events.

I'm the same, I definitely drive more conservatively online.

I did two contrasting races recently;

Laguna Seca: Started first, beat off the line by someone who turned out to be slower. I back off on the exit to turn one to avoid hitting him off, then two cars take me on the inside of the first of the 90 degree right handers. Then I get sandwiched between two cars for the next turn and lose several more places. By the corkscrew I was 8th and the turn afterwards I got rammed off the road (Again trying not to hit the car infront who braked hard, which is unusual for that corner). I eventually finished 9th, and the guy I avoided hitting into turn one finished 13th, and last. This could all have been avoided if i'd just pushed my way past the slow car into turn one, It was a shuffle race and I was in a decent car so I probably would have led the entire race.

London: Time after time at London i'm far and away the fastest guy on the track. I do drive conservatively on this track and that is how you win here. I started last and kept braking early for each turn, cutting the kerb into each of the tight turns (Still counts as track). Other cars would brake later and venture wide or get a slower exit. So one by one I kept picking them off, not making contact with any of them until i'm first, and then I go on to win the race by 4+ seconds. Driving conservatively here pays it's dividends because there are no obvious places where you have to back off to avoid contact, or where you can be punted off (Providing you go as close to the barrier as possible on the inside of turns).

It varies from track to track, race to race and the skill of the competition. But I pride myself on building a reputation for being a clean driver. If you're faster, be patient and you will pass. If you're not, try and keep up and make sure not to punt him off. If avoiding contact infront results in you losing places, hard luck, it happens to the best drivers in the world too. I do get impatient if I know I am faster though, and do tend to be more optimistic with my passing moves, hoping the slower driver will go wide anyway.

Oh, and I definitely pull that face when i'm bracing for impact, I didn't realise until you mentioned it, but I definitely do it :D

I tend to drive at 95%, simply because I don't want to wear out my tyres or crash. I'm also very careful when battling with other cars, but then again I only race with damage on heavy & penalties off.

👍

Definitely drive more carefully in a race than free run, but it depends who you're racing. If I'm racing someone who is fast but pushes too hard then I'll go easy and use their draft until they make the inevitable mistake and then do my best to disappear into the distance. However some drivers I know can drive at 100% without mistakes and thats when the fun begins 👍

Of course there is much more to it than that, race length and the car's tyre wear characteristics all play a role, but the key factor is what the other racers you are with drive like without a doubt.

Depends how many backwards drivers I have to avoid

I'm one of those backwards drivers.

I generally jump in and end up not knowing what I'm doing (slow car compared to the feeld, the only one on sports tires, no tuning on the car, etc...).
So I try to feel the track losing time compared to the others.
When someone faster comes up, I go to the side. Then notice the off track is set to realistic, start spinning and do loads of damage.

I really need to get more experience to make it a joy for all.

That said had some really good races with GTP members online, Nordschleife and Madrid mini.

I drive way more conservatively online so I can avoid crashing others, and that probably slows me down a slight bit. I tend to be much more aggressive and pick up the pace when it's the final lap, but I'm not rolling over anyone.

I know what you mean. Got the same problem.

In free run before the race, Im always pushing and driving very aggressive, especially when someone in the server sets a new best lap (i HATE it to be slower then someone xD and that comes from a medicore player like me!).
But in the races im always driving to careful, braking to early etc (had a lot of accidents on cold tires, maybe thats the reason). Also, Im to scared of bumping someone else, so I never defend my position as if my life depend on it.
But everything changes when there is a big gap (10 seconds+) between the leader and me. Then im pushing again and usually setting my best lap times.

Im trying to be a very aggressive driver, but it somehow doesn`t works. I want to drive always on the limit and as fast as I can like G.Villeneuve (my favorite driver), but I just drive to "friendly" (maybe because I did a lot of enduro races in A-spec mode and trained myself to safe tires) and smooth.

I did something once that I thought was quite good. The first race I drove in after entering the lobby, I would do a slow drive to make the other players think I was abit of a 'pensioner behind the wheel' Hopefully they'd say things like "your slow as s***" or soemthing. Next race I would attempt (and 100% succeed) to thrash them by miles, funny to hear them so shocked ;)
