Did some searching and couldn't come up with any results. If there's a thread for this already, please direct me to it. Otherwise..

Has anybody noticed how there are often 2 Vipers when racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans? 1 is the Dodge #91, one is the Chrysler #51. Both cars are nearly identical, the only noticeable difference from the outside are more decals on the Chrysler version.

What I've noticed, is that the Dodge version ALWAYS finishes ahead of the Chrysler version. Usually by a few laps.

I checked the booklet I got with the GT5 Collector's Edition, and it lists the cars as the same in both weight and power. Has anybody else noticed this? And if so, do you know why these cars are so different in performance?

Handling differences perhaps?

No, their top speeds are different. And they shift gears at different points. Yet their power is the same. Possibly different stock transmission settings?

Probably just the AI playing their role in sucking.

Sometimes in arcade, the Playstation Team Oreca R8 finishes ahead of the 2001 Audi R8, even though the Oreca car weighs 50 KG more.

I think the Oreca car also has slightly less power.

It can't be that. Because no matter what, the Dodge ALWAYS beats the Chrysler. By a LOT. And it's up to 5 mph. Faster top speed down Hunaudieres as well.

Hmm. The last time I played the 24 hours (B-Spec) the Chrysler ended up beating the Dodge by like 2 minutes of something. But that was due to the Dodge not knowing how to race in the rain.

I have not noticed this before. Is the #51 listed under Chrysler or is it Dodge?
I have both of them..I may do some tests later.

The #51 is the "Chrysler" version, however it still may be listed officially as a Dodge, I'm not actually sure.

That doesn't tell me if its true. That's just you saying the same thing in another thread. What I meant is, how do you actually know that?

If you had read the rest of the thread, you would have found out.

Yep. By default, #91 is set up to do 209mph whereas #51 is set up to do 222mph.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks to all for the input. Pretty interesting that Polyphony included that minor difference as well..

They may have got it wrong though, according to the ad I linked just up there ^^^ the same car won at Le Mans AND Daytona.

Oreca ran 91, 92, 93 for that year, except at Le Mans where they were numbered 51, 52 and 53. 91 and 51 are the same car.

That's because the 51 car raced at LeMans where top speed is more important than at Daytona so Oreca tuned the Viper for that race. #91 and #51 - they are the same car with different tunes for different races. ;)

If that's the case, why does the "Daytona" #91 beat the "Le Mans" #51? Just Gran Turismo not being perfect?

I don't think the AI replicates different set-ups. If it did include that, then the 51 car should beat the 91 every time since it is set up for La Sarthe and not Daytona.

I just think it's assigned AI doing their job as told by the game, with a few random actions performed here and there.

I had mentioned this more than an year ago. The #91 is faster than the #51. With Bob or me driving I always get much faster times and speeds with the #91 for some reason. Im almost 2 secs and 10mph faster in the #91 than in the #51 at Daytona...Haven't played the game in a while but now I fell the Le Mans juices flowing again. I think I might just pull out the game for a nostalgic solo run on Le Mans....

I could be wrong but I believe maybe that PD gave the #91 the edge because at the 24 Hours of Daytona the #91 conquered EVERY car and manufacturer there. It came it 1st over all beating even the top Prototype class. It was a very special win as it doesn't happen like that. Team Corvette did the same thing many years later after the factory Viper Le Mans program was pulled by the Chrysler bean counters in 2000.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was just for nostalgia or favorite car reasons they have it faster then the #51. Look how they programmed the older cars to be faster than the newer cars when the comp drives them. An example would be Countach Lp400's and Muira's destroying Murcielagos, Enzo's, ACR, Veyron's etc. I think the programmers have soft spots for certain cars. So don't expect the reason to be solely based on real life lol.

Yes, but then it's not really a sim anymore...

Exactly my problem with GT5. From launch GT5 did not resemble a Sim that was serious about being a Sim. Hence one of the reasons I don't play it anymore. Hard for a guy like me that's exacting to take a "real simulator" seriously with this kind of approach to details. I hated playing the supercar races and watching all the real world top dogs get left in the back half of the field while Muira's etc run down and beat Enzo's, Mclaren's, ACR's etc. I got real tired of the fakeness real fast with this game. I hope they address these issues in GT6 as it does ruin any hint of authenticity they were trying to achieve. Lets not forget S2000 killing FGT's, GTR's etc lol....
