Does ASM suck?

Active steering is not ASM, no where in GT5P is it called ASM or has management attached to the name.
I have had (and probably still do, haven't checking in a while) quite a few first place positions in the online rankings and I don't have active steering set. I only tried active steer back in the GT5P demo and didn't like it, I don't see how it would make me any faster.

Anyway this was not what the original poster is talking about. I never use ASM as it really does slow good drivers down, not too long ago I bought some car and forgot to turn to turn off ASM, boy what a mess ASM makes of the drivability.

Yes a couple are still TOP that I seen recently. Have you been able to play GT5P recently? PD have put some Eiger F PRO Time-Trials for F40, S2000, GT-R, RX-7, F1, Evo X, and Z06 tuned with R1 tyres (finish on the 12th June) in the online section like Spec I.

Would be good to see how you fair, as it doesn't seem many top players like yourself even bother that much with those located in the arcade section anymore compared to Spec 1 and ones I just mentioned online (they do get deleted though, so understandable). 350Z TT is a good standard because of GT Academy.

Just on Active Steering not to be confused with ASM from the OP. It would be surprising to me that people like Trek and el_greco and others use Active Steering to gain. I got a wheel a couple of days ago after years of playing with pads and managed to match pad times after about 7 hours play over a couple of days, but I can't get any advantage from Active Steering set on Mild or Strong, it just feels slightly more "Active" and lively like more feedback, but I'm still just getting a feel for the wheel, even though I've been driving many types of cars in real life for 15 years. Still I would think the famous top players could match their times with Active Steering OFF. How much gain can some people get if you read this amar212, thanks.

The GTP welcomes any driver of any skill level here, not just those who think, or are confirmed as being good drivers. We honestly don't need this sort of attitude here.

OK, I guess that came out a bit harsh. sorry my bad, I shall edit my post and take note in the future. 👍

Well i am in the top ten in a fair few of the online rankings, and use no driving aids at all other than ABS @ 1, Also using a DS3 as i dont have a G25. yet :sly:

Active steering = You suck at driving. Maybe Need for speed is more suited to these people.

Wait until you have a G25.....being fast with a gamepad says nothing about how fast you will be with a wheel. Maybe you will turn on active steering then...;-)

Honestly, what is the problem with people having some driving aids turned on? It's still a game and it should be fun, and if its more fun with aids on, so it is.

I agree that they should cost something (maybe in terms of performance points), so there is a motivation to drive without them and good drivers will be rewarded for driving without, or there should be a Sim-mode where you can't use any aids...

But as long its a feature everybody is allowed to use, this has nothing to do with cheating or suck at driving, as everybody can use this option.

Just my 2 cents...

Cool :)

No, I have been traveling a lot lately and still wont have access to my PS3 for about a month and a half yet (getting GT5P cravings right now :nervous:)

I have quite a few plans to get back into it when I get back home, which includes more online racing. :)

(I also havent bothered much with TT ranking since spec 1 as they just get wiped from time to time)

Hi, I have used a wheel before, I have a Driving force Pro, But i gave it to my friend about a year ago. No active steering will be used.
:P

I actually use ASM- Stability Management + Traction Control(and ABS) on most non-AWD cars. But slowly I'm elimininating the need for assistance. And I'm using G25 and I have a few top 10 ranking. Most Top drivers from what I see, have both the ASM and traction off although there's no way of knowing whether the have the Active Steering option on.

I tried active steering for a little bit last night, what I found is it makes you more consistent, but doesn't make you much faster. All it basically does is help you correct oversteer, it's only really helpful when you lose concentration for a bit - e.g. a really long race.

I certainly didn't see my times dropping any using it for fast laps.

I don't use active steering (I'm using a DFP). I don't care either way if people use it or not. Whatever makes you faster :)

Back OT, ASM is something I've used regularly with non-4WD cars (didn't feel the need for them with 4WD cars).

But now I'm racing (online and offline) without it on (always raced with TC at zero, ABS at 1). This was driven by a) to improve my driving skills, and b) by most accounts, it inhibits the maximum potential of the car anyway.

I did find it difficult initially, but after some time with the F430 (yes, it's an awesome handling car compared to the Vipers and Z06's, thus making the lack of ASM less pronounced), i've grown to love having no ASM. It did feel slower, having to feather the throttle more (e.g. exit of Spoon, or entry to Dunlop), but there's no refuting the improved lap times i've been getting to my previous ones.

All in all, whatever makes you race faster and/or enjoy the game more, do it :) With or without aids 👍

ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS WOW!!! FINALLY!

Ive been having such a hard time driving always spinning out and never understood WHY? That did not seem like REAL DRIVING.........I just discovered this active steering stuff and i can finally drive without spinning out so much...However while on the strong setting it still felt fake in that i was not spinning out when i should.

On the other hand, is was Finally like ReAL DRIVING and more realistic when set to mild.
Cars just dont spin out so much in real life as they do with this feature turned off. Thats just my opinion

I think there is a huge difference between wheel and pad. I am definitely getting a wheel this weekend! I am excited about making the driving more realistic. I have a 99' M3 and would love to take a spin in the Beamers in this game with a wheel and shifter!

didnt want to make a thread for this so ill post it in here as its about driver aids...

does anyone drive online / timetrails with ABS off? i drive with it set to 1, and have wondered if its going to benefit you with it off. when you have to off will it give you more control over your brakes? does it give you better stopping distance?

For me at least I find a big difference between on/off. With it off I definitely have more of a tendency to lock up and slide straight on at times... however the difference between 1 & 10 is minimal.

I only turn it off for cars that don't have ABS in real life, as for benificial.... Not really but it probably depends on the track and corner. I notice when I do hot laps I can manage to match my ABS lap times with the non-ABS laps (ABS = 0), havent done any specific testing on the differences in stopping distances but I generally do trail-in much more with ABS on (ABS=1) yet don't gain anything really in the end lap time over non-ABS times.
