I've noticed that in the WRS clutches are usually prohibited. I also have read that a particular replay didn't use a clutch so it's a good one to copy. In real life a paddle shifting transmission is often faster than the true manual. In GT5P and theoretically in GT5 does the clutch give an advantage? If so can someone explain it to me.

Its fun thats for sure! I read on here theres some problem in prolouge that effects power, but not in a good way.. i also read its fixed in gt5. i personally like using the clutch, just the fun of it. if there was a real advantage in gt5 it would be with the cars where autoclutch shifts slower..

People noticed in competitions that drivers using a clutch in GT5 Prologue had the throttle faster back on the wheels.

It seems that when you paddle shift in GT5p the software automatically gives a time that the throttle is away to allow for the shift.
When you do it with a steering wheel with shifter, it seems you can reduce the time that there is no throttle. See also here.

P.S.: There is also a thing called the clutch cheat, these are people that modified their steering wheel so they never loose throttle, allowing something very close to flat shifting. The clutch cheat is a way to keep the accelerator fully depressed and still change gear without it slipping into neutral. See also the excellent write up of Maz.

This is the way my Fanatec wheel works, if i don't press the triangle...:D

On Forza the maunal clutch gives a pretty big advantage especially when damage is off. You can hold the throttle open clutch/shift very quickly. It varies from car to car but if you have a ghost saved that uses the auto clutch and race it with a manual clutch it is not uncommon to pull roughly 1 car length with each upshift.
