You put the car into the corner at such an attitude that you can slide round the corner (usually in 90 degree or sharper bends), without steering at all? E.g. taking the first corner of Laguna Seca in a Viper GTSR Team Oreca in the S-6 license. It's just really cool flinging the nose into the bend, and smoothly on-off pressing the throttle, you can make the car take the bend with no steering (after the initial turn in).

Is there a name for this kind of look-no-hands sliding? Because if there isn't, there should be! Not only is it fun to do, it is seriously fast, and you can set good times using it.

That depends how much you are sliding... Remember, a true "4 wheel drift" isn't really a drift at all... You aren't past the limits of adhesion, you are closer to 100% adhesion... Beacause the wheels are moving, and the car is in motion, you can utilize a very slight slip angle to actually increase the tires traction coeficient... The slight slip angle can also set you up better for turn exit... This is not to be confused with a "drift technique"... It is undoubtedly a "grip technique" and no mistake...

I am sliding quite a lot but the tyres aren't really screeching very much, and there isn't much in the way of tyre smoke. I press the accelerator to turn the car, and blend the throttle out to prevent too much oversteer.

The ONLY time when you should use zero countersteer in a drift is during an AWD drift. IF you have zero countersteer in a FR/MR/RR drift then you simply have no angle. There are times when the corner is banked and you need minimal countersteer, but in general, no countersteer means no angle unless it's AWD.
 
It should be pointed out that this cornering style can work really well with certain setups. On the S-6 license first sector, I have achieved a first sector time of 20.129 using this method.
 
You are kind of inbetween a 4 wheel drift and a standard drift... If you really want good lap times, try to refine the technique so your tires aren't screaching at all, and there is 0 tire smoke... Then you will blow everyone away... However, it is not a technique that is easy to duplicate perfectly every time...

This is a common mistake.... What you describe is "AWD/4WD drifting" or "no counter drifting"... This is not to be confused with a "4 wheel drift" which is not really a drift technique, but a grip technique in which the tires traction is maximised to increase cornering speed... If you can easily see, or hear, the car drifting, you are certainly not in a true "4 wheel drift"...

Normally you would be correct... However, a "4 wheel drift" utilizes a very slight slip angle which, if done correctly, increases the amount of traction... I know it's a bit confusing, but that's the way it is... We had a long thread around here a while back that discussed drift vs. grip, and "4 wheel drift" was discussed to exhaustion... Try a search on "Drift vs. Grip", or "4 wheel drift" and you will probably find it...

Does anyone else ever do this while driving at the limit to get fast lap times? Take their hands off the wheel (ok I use a DS2 but it's equivalent) while turning the car using the throttle (and sometimes the brakes in shallower corners).
 
Well, when you are driving a high powered (rear wheel drive I suppose) car, enter into the corner, and then turn the corner without using steering, even in hairpin bends. You end up with a kind of gentle slide that doesn't produce tyre smoke, maybe a little bit of tyre screeching here and there. Neither grip nor drift, really. But seriously fast.

Basically to turn the car you use the throttle only, and the brakes too if you are really confident with your ability to get on and off the brakes smoothly. But the point is you take the corner without steering. All you need is to have a high powered car, and make sure you are a little sideways as you enter the corner. Does anyone else drive this way?
 
Is it me or are you restating your original question F310B?
I'm still kinda confused on how to do what your doing.
Because without steering with FRs I simply spin out or have no angle at all.

Can you post the setup of your car by chance?

You are reffering to a "4 wheel drift"... If done correctly it is a very good way to take turns to increase your lap times... It should not be confused with drifting...

If you look at the videos for the fastest laps of S6 you will see that they ustilize this 4 wheel drift/grip technique. I probably wouldn't consider it drifiting because it is not for show, but to get a better lap time.
 
Yes, it's not for show, and yes I learned it while improving my time on the S6 license. It can work well in other cars too, though.

It's not completely 'no steering', it's 'no steering after you enter the corner.' At first I thought it was amusing, then realised how quick I was going :scared:

I don't really have a setup... I just drive the car!

In shallower corners I usually do a little steering for this method, but in slow corners, i stop steering well before the apex. The only steering I do is to get the car pointing inwards to the corner as I brake.
 
I used to do this during that one turn in Rome Circuit that only turns, like, 30 degrees and is really long. I'd turn the wheel hard for a second, and the back wheels would keep sliding around as I went foward, even though there was no steering.
 
i think i know what your sayin. it kinda turns by itself when you hit the brakes and use the gas afterwhile you turn in. you dont need a high powered car for that...i used that method in the begginning of the game with the trueno.
