Dreams, seeing into the future?

It's possible. Not even memories are straight up recordings of the past... not unless you've really taken the time to commit to memory every single detail (if you're a savant, that's another matter... your brain makes room for that memory by ignoring other things, like interpersonal relation skills). Basically, you're playing out the scene in your mind like a play... taking set pieces and characters from the huge audiovisual library in your head.

You're right on that part... you can alter your memory to fit facts that you later learn. That's why eyewitness accounts of disasters, accidents and the like are so notoriously unreliable.

And yet a dream is something that has to be remembered, with the faulty recollection you allude to distorting its "meaning." That distortion can go any direction the dreamer wants it to go, to the point of "remembering" a dream that fits something just witnessed IRL.

You didn't dream the future, some event distorted your recollection of the past.

I know this is true! Its happened to me to many times for me to think that it is a coincidence. I have been practising Lucid Dreaming on and off for most of my life, as an experiment to see if I can influence the dreams that I have that seem to 'predict' future events. I haven't had much luck on that front, but I have been able to remember a dream I have had, as though it was an actual memory of something I have done in real life (if you catch my drift).

Slightly off-topic: On one occasion I 'woke up' three times in a dream. Each time I was sure that I was awake, only to realise that I wasn't. By the time I actually woke up, I wasn't sure if I was actually awake or asleep! This also happens often enough for me to have a set routine 'in dream' - a reality check so to speak.

Wikipedia (Lucid Dreams)
False awakening

In a false awakening, one suddenly dreams of having been awakened. Commonly in a false awakening, the room is similar to the room in which the person fell asleep. If the person was lucid, they often believe that they are no longer dreaming and may start exiting the room and so forth. This can be a nemesis in the art of lucid dreaming, because it usually causes people to give up their awareness of being in a dream, but it can also cause someone to become lucid if the person does a reality check whenever he/she awakens. People who keep a sream journal and write down their dreams upon awakening sometimes report having to write down the same dream multiple times because of this phenomenon. It has also been known to cause bed wetting as one may dream that they have awoken to go to the restroom, but in reality are still dreaming.

* And I've done that a few times too! :dopey:

Back to the future dream thing. Trust me on this, I believe you can see the future in your dreams, but sometimes the gap between the dream and reality, can be days, weeks months, or even years!

One last thing, be VERY careful of what you dream for, because it 'can' come true... I've personally had a a couple of real life experiences (one in particular) that I dreamt of, that has actually come true - almost exactly as I dreamt it!

Morpheus
Have you ever had a dream, Neo, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream, Neo? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

Coincidence and pattern ≠ predicting the future. Look up at post #27.

I had a long period of being able to lucid dream, but I haven't been able to do it for about half a year now. Not that I've actually tried, it kinda just happens. Most the time I was only able to stay lucid for a short time before waking up, or just losing control of the dream again, but there has been a few dreams which I have been able to stay in control of for a long time. Usually I don't really think to do anything really amazing. There was one time where I got myself to fly, but then I lost control of the dream and it didn't happen again. Another time I was able to control a train which I had missed, it took a while to gain complete control of the train though. I made it reverse back and forward a few times before actually getting it to stop right in front of me. It's all good fun.

Coincidence and pattern ≠ predicting the future

Possibly, but my dream was too specific for me to believe that it was anything like a coincidence.

I believe that Deja Vu is possible momments of time in your life that you would experience in the future. Though you have seen it before but haven't done the action yet. If life is in a series of momments, then Deja Vu would be the filler.

I had a funny coincidence happen just the other day - but it kind of emphasised my point... that you may well make a pretty specific (if not downright bizarre) "prediction" in a dream, but it is always "close but no cigar" (and pretty meaningless/insignificant anyway)... I dreamed last week that my sister (who has a pet greyhound) had a pet leopard instead. A bit weird, but thought nothing of it... until I went round to her house on Sunday and she showed me some pics she had taken earlier that day, including a photo of a leopard she saw at Edinburgh zoo... so there my sister was, sitting with a "leopard" on her lap, just as I had dreamed last week... weird, huh?

Well, not really - for starters, it wasn't an actual leopard, just a photo of one, and it didn't jump up on me like it did in my dream (perhaps a throwback to when my cousin's cat did that to me last year!). What did it mean? Did I subconsciously predict that my sister would go to the zoo in the first time in a decade? I don't think so. Did I even remember that I had had the dream until I saw the picture, and then put the two things together? I'm not sure... certainly, the fact that I remembered about the dream as soon as I saw the picture says something... perhaps it is more remarkable that it happened so soon after the dream, and that it was still fresh in my mind. Sure enough, if she had gone to the zoo in one year's time, no doubt I wouldn't have remembered that I ever dreamed that she had a pet leopard!

But even if it was a "real" prediction, what of it? Can I now fortell (albeit in a slightly abstract way) roughly when my sister will go to the zoo? :p

I get that too. Sometimes, when I get the I've-done-this-before feeling, I'll then do something completely random, only to get really freaked out when I realise that I did that "last time" too... :scared:

yeah I do that often as well:nervous: Like realising you're in deja Vu while it's still happening :scared:

I know this is a major thread grave dig but I wasn't going to bring a new thread on this.

I just had the most vivid, 🤬 up dream I've had since I was born I'd say and the worst thing is I can remember the whole thing. It starts off with a guy abusing me and yelling crap at me, then I get in a fight with him. After beating him to a pulp, I go inside and call the police. I come back outside to see where the guy has gone and get medical alcohol thrown over me, then a light is thrown at me. I run, but the flame hits the alcohol that's on the ground, flames race up and get me and while I'm on fire, he throws another incendiary device at me that exploded on contact and BAM!.................I suddenly wake up.

Now I seriously hope that isn't a vision of my future. But after checking the dream dictionary over at dreammoods.com I got the following:

To dream that you are in a fight, indicates inner turmoil. Some aspect of yourself is in conflict with another aspect of yourself. Perhaps an unresolved or unacknowledged part is fighting for its right to be heard. It may also parallel a fight or struggle that you are going through in your waking life.

To dream that you are being burned by fire, indicates that your temper is getting out of control. Some issue or situation is burning you up inside.

To dream that you are enveloped in flames or blown up into the air by an explosion, forewarns that unworthy friends will violate your rights and abuse your confidence.

Now I do have some issues in my life concerning the family, but it's not eating me up so to speak, it's an inconvenience that I have to deal with such messed up in-laws. I don't know........feeling pretty messed up from that dream though, I feel literally sick in the stomach right at the moment.

Has anyone else had a messed up dream like this?? I feel like the only crazy person around at the moment because of that dream.........*shudders*.

As the saying goes, either contribute something worthwhile or don't post, I'm asking a serious question. :grumpy:

Okay, you've had a nightmare. We've all had them. But you can take control of your dreams. It's scientifically proven that people can be fully conscious while remaining asleep and dreaming at the same time. You can become a lucid dreamer and enhance personal confidence, promote mental health and perhaps also physical health, and facilitate your own creative problem solving skills.

Stephen LaBerge, Ph.D. of the Stanford University Sleep Research center authored a book, Lucid Dreaming. Read it, and buy a $10 lucid dreaming kit. It's easy and safe. I did it.

Thanks for sharing your story, mafia boy.

Respectfully yours,
Dotini

Thanks Dotini, I will check it out for sure. I find this dream so much different to any other nightmare I've experienced in the past for the fact it was so lucid as you've described. Where did you buy the kit if you don't mind me asking??

Oh, the kit is not terribly important. It just makes getting into lucid dreaming much easier. It generally consists of simplified instructions for lucid dreaming, pictorial aids to focus on when retiring for the night, and maybe some nice smelling cachet for under your pillow. I bought mine at a "New Age" book store, but surely you might find one online. Note that "lucid" refers to you being in control of the dream, and not a dream which is particularly vivid or disturbing.

If you do check this out, I've no doubt you'll be well served.

Yours,
Dotini

Edit: You are very wise to pay heed to what your unconscious/subconscious mind is doing. By taking steps, as you are, to understand and take control, you are doing the healthy and exactly right thing.

This website looks like it is helpfull in making yoiu have a lucid dream.
http://www.wikihow.com/Lucid-Dream
any other tips. I have tried lots of other thing like this (idoser, downloading hypnosis) none of them work on me i have a to active mind i think. Any ideas on how to possibly make them work. I tried something a bit like lucid dreams. It works like this. Lie down your head in your arms and make yourself see those swirly patterns you get when you rub your eyes. Think about something (eg: Motorsport) you should see a image or video of your chosen subject subconsiously.

Back to the original subject.
I have these moments. They are de ja vu however i do something and then swear that i knew i would do that.
