Drifting for a noobie like me

I'm a noob as you all might call me, and I'm new here. This site rocks it has everything (I think) that you might need for GT stuff.

Well anyways, I'm having trouble doing drifts and I just started doing it recently. I checked out the thread about it but I don't quite understand some of it. (I don't know much about cars).

Here's What I do:
1) Shift down
2) Turn and E-Brake
3) Counter-Steer
4) Step on gas (when I find the angle is right)
5) Spin-out

What am I doing wrong? What is the best way to reduce your angle? I know letting go of the gas does a little.

PS I'm using a controller. Can't afford a wheel

you are prolly giving it to much gas through the turn...
and i would work on initiating the drift without using the e-brake....

what car , hp, and tires are you using by the way????
 
Step 2 = Not the right way to do it. Especially with the controller.
The best way is to find a car and setting setup that you're comfortable with to start with then work from there I think. Alot of people don't agree with me on it... but that's how I started.
 
ur too much of a noob to be worrying about setups...

I would pick the AE86ss or S13 1800cc or 180sx....

pick one of them cars and then put simulation tires on it, do all the drivetrain mods and a 1.5way lsd(not the full)... try drifting it a couple times w/ stock hp and suspension, if u have a problem IM me on AIM....

Right now I'm currently driving a Mazda: RX-7 RZ / 410hp / Front: Normal Rear: Sim


Btw do you want me to use the brakes instead of the e-brake?
 
way way too much HP....

do what I posted above and get at me w/ your results...

and yes.. feint and brake drifting is my style and isn't to hard to learn...

Dr-Mad: You should never ever ever mix tires. Period. If you want to get better and use a lot of different techniques then use sims all around for now. Also as Exhaust note said, go with a lighter car to begin with. The FD is great for drifting but not so hot for learning. So get an S13 1800(personal favorite) put some sims, all drivetrain mods, all weight reduction, brake balance controller and learn technique. I'm serious, you'll figure out so much in the first hour that it's not even funny. Have fun!

I've tested them all and the 1.5 seems to be the one that i feel most comfortable with... It lets me keep my line, driving the car where i want it to go. where as the 2 way kinda tends to make the car drift to the outside of the track...

i dunno, i just like the 1.5way the best....

i set my cars up so that they would handle great for grip driving w/o getting carried away in all the extra stuff(the reason why I never buy a racing suspension)... If your car handles great grip driving then its gonna handle great sideways too...
 
i think using the fd isn't a bad idea. i actually have the same car with the same horsepower, but with all sims. i think its one of the easiest cars to drift with. here's what i do. brake. shift down. turn in. gas if i need to. counter steer. gas depending on turn. ease off on counter steer for a smooth exit. gas again. this is just general. each turn is different, so you might need to change the steps accordingly.
 
one of the easiest way to learn how to drift smoothly is to start out all stock with the ASM(Active Stability System) and the TCS(Traction Control System) set to zero. putting sims on helps a lot too. one thing though...dont enter a corner with e-brakes with a car that squeezes more than 280HP cus you'll defenitely spinout. if you're riding somewhere around 250HP, brake into the corner and just give the throttle a little burst to slide then ease up on the gas when you exit. i hope that helped
 
Yeha I only use ebrake to extend my drift if I enter too early. You really don't need power, feint motion and braking drift can get you into a slide pretty easy.
 
First off... You need to study real life drift technique... Do a Google search on "Drift Techniques"... Study them, and try to apply them....

Next, you should take out a stock car on sims (S13, S14, 180SX) buy all drivetrain mods, FULL LSD (there is no reason to buy anything less), full suspension, brakes, and brake controller.... This will force you to use good technique to get the car to drift, instead of just using the power of the car to initiate... Using the e-brake to initiate drifts can get to be a bad habit.. The e-brake is a useful tool, but only in moderation and combination with other techniques....

So, buy any one of the Silvias previously mentioned...
Install all drivetrain mods (including FULL LSD)....
Install Full suspension/brakes/brake controler
Turn the ASM and TCS to zero
Slap on sim tires and begin the learning process

Furthermore, don't mix tires... It is a really bad habit and will only hinder your progress as a drifter....

I just bought a S13, I put all the drive trains besides transmissions (I think thats what its called little dizzy right now :D), and sim tires. I'm going on the trail mountain currently but I'm having trouble initiating a drift since I can't over-steer...

Btw SilviaDrifter I loved your countersteer zero vid its pro baby pro! (nice quality too)

Install the full transmission... You can't put down the power of the engine effectively without one... Also, as I said before, a stock (power) car on sims forces you to use weight transfer to initiate drifts instead of using the power of the engine.... Did you do a Google search for "Drift Techniques"?....

Yes... That last one really confused me... He has just contradicted all of the posts before...
(God I'm sick of the stupid comments....Not that one just other stupid ones....) This is why I am hibernating ..... :angry:
 
TT388 was trying to say that drifting a stock 86 without sims is possible, which it is.... However, it is not the best way to learn.....

Well I actually drifted a few corners on trail mountain, but it's still hard as hell trying to drift it. I'm starting to think drifting with the wheel is hell lot easier but thats just me since I have bad control with the dual shock.
 
Why don't you go to midfield II. I found that it's a better mix of corners and not so much linking is needed as Trial Mountain.

What technique(s) are you using?

Well I'm trying the power drifting style since I'm new and I heard it was the easiest.
 
hey im a newbie too but i think power drifiting is more appropriate w/ normal tires
if you wanna improve your technique brake drifing and feint motion is gewd idea to start with
brake driting - do an early brake and do a hard turn control the car using the countersteering and throttle modulation (easy on the gas)

feint - if your turning left start by moving in the center then sway a lil to the righ then a hard turn on the left

practice w/ sims coz thats where i learned how to control the car.. it makes alot difference driving w/ sims.... practice sims then normal tires then back to sims youll see a big difference

Ok, well that'll work. But you shouldn't rely on it. Try Brake drifting and try to slip into feinting. It's tough, but well worth learning. The best drifter has an array of techniques at their disposal! :)
