I've found drifting has really increased my rally skills. I've been driving Grand Canyon with my Lancias and the Escudo and wow. I always used to suck at rally driving but my lap times are making me smile. I notice alot of GT folks say they suck at rally but are good an the tarmac. If any of you drifters haven't rallied in awhile give it a go. Since most drifting is done with RWD give the Lancia Stratos Rally Car a try on the dirt.

I'm sure somebody has mentioned this before but these forums are kind of dead lately.

Yeah they are, I don't know why, I think someone's computer got snow'd in... lmao.

But I've tried, and noh... I still cannot rally to save my life, theres still quite a big diffrence in the angle to speed ratio you need to take a turn that i just cannot figure out... haha

I'm the opposite, I found that the rally served as my best gateway into tarmac drifting. Nice warm-up to get a feel for being sideways. I'm almost all the way thru the whole rally hall

i dont find drifting and rally to be similar. In rally, you have a great loss of grip, whereas drifting takes place on a dry road, which has an abundant amount of grip. when drifting, the task is to intentionally ungrip from grip, whereas rally iskeeping control of a slippery surface.

The only similar thing I can think of is getting the feel of being out of control and being able to control it.

And this subforum is dead because I stopped playing GT4..

Rally Driving is the same as drifting, only less traction, and it has all the same driving concepts. It's all about the counter-steer concept. It does take awhile to get the hang of, luckily I had a great game called 'Mario Andretti Racing' that included 'Sprint' driving, but this was back in Sega Genesis days. Anyway the game had very good instructions on how to 'sprint' race.

OMG!!! I too have that game. Don't play it that often, still fun though!

You still have a Genesis??? Wow I thought it went extinct!! That game and my old '85 Escort w/ bald tires driving in the snow, taught me how to control slides.
Now if I could only get my hands on a Turbo Grafix 16, I still have my 'Military Madness' Hue Card.

Okay enough nostalgia; Drifting does make every aspect of your driving better, when you learn how to CONTROL the car in the midst of a slide, you can do just about anything else with a car.

totally agree, two different world, different style and techniques needed.

Considering drifting sparked from rallying, and the same techniques for drifting were invented for rally over 30 years ago... it's not surprising.

In fact Rally is probably the only autosport where drifting is used to get around corners (especially hairpins) faster.

Wow thats completely false, rally is all about drifting... I doubt you know anything about the sport of rally or even the history of drifting but KT sure as hell didn't invent drifting.

And BTW drift doesn't have to be on tarmac to be considered a drift.

Though Rally didn't really invent Drifting but it used it mostly until KT would use it to entertain the crowd in his Races. Drifting is a Racing Technique, KT just put it through mainstream.

Youre right about KT, but drifting was really invented by rally drivers, in fact the feint technique in rally is called a Scandanavian Flick because scandanavian drivers way back when invented the technique for rally.
Rally was the first sport ever to see drifting techniques, which have been seen since the 1930's maybe earlier.

Some may argue that rally uses powerslides, not drifts. I could care less about the difference, because it's nearly the same.

I've been always wondering what does powersliding really mean?
Does it mean that you initiate the drift with sheer power or that you're sliding with constant overpowering while keeping the car in control with steering motions?

I'd say the rally drivers are using dynamic drifting all the time and they're the most skilled people in it.
They often say that in order to be fast you need to slide as little as possible, which may sound even controversial :)
It's those slow corners where they slide even during the braking because on gravel roads it's almost as effective as locking the brakes on a straight line

I just consider the difference to be that powerslides never get more angle than the angle of the corner, while drifting goes for as much angle as possible. I'm probably wrong though.
