Well I can relate to that feeling, but as Sleek Strados said, it's easer for me to swich becuase when the whole drifting craze hit GT players, I still stuck a bit to grip driving and even though it's an occasional habbit, when I'm searous I will stick to grip driving. It not only depends on mood but also the car itself. If it has good grip to beging with it's sorta easier than with a car with settings to lose traction the instant you sway from a strait line.
Also it's becuase for me I stuck to grip because around 2002/3 well before I got a good look at Initial D (I saw a bit of the manga around 03', first saw Initial D in a fan music video in 1999/2000...) i found that sliding all over the place regardless of how it's done wore out tires faster, so I simply stuck to keeping the tires from ever losing grip.
Although lately I pratice drifting a lot, I'll drive around a track using grip style driving untill I get comfortable with it before I try drifting unless I'm aware of how the car will react depending on what I do on whatever turn.
It may seam stupid to think about drift in 2 ways, for showing off and for speed becuase grip is faster, but becuase I've been trying to go as fast as possible drifting (I.E. like Fujiwara Takumi...), the margin for me has been a much smaller gap compaired to what Sleek Strados said (then again what he said after that...)...but then again the cars I drift with for the time being aren't so built to race really sans my Corvette Z06.
Long story short for me, I don't think I've drift enough, becuase I've been driving in the GT serries, all 3 games out in the US so far, I've built a grip driving mentality that's hard to break, even though lately I've been trying to get better and better at drifting. Persornally I don't think I drift too much.
