First off I want to say Hello, and how is everyone? I just joined! :gtpflag:

I used to have a G25 then upgraded to a G27... then I became very busy and the lack of time to enjoy the wheel led me to selling it.

I am now using a dualshock controller and am having trouble drifting. I've been looking around this section and from what I see, most of the drifting setup guides are based off of a wheel.

So, I was wondering what a good setup/car is to begin drifting with a controller would be. Any tips and help are greatly appreciated! :)
 
Look in the seasonals section and grab the Audi RS6 Avant tune. That's what got me started. I just got wifi set up a few days ago, so I haven't drifted in gt5 that much. I was barely getting by until I trie that tune, now I'm at 17711pts for 2388th place. I was just over 1000th yesterday

Thanks. I've checked that before making this thread but a majority of the setups there are wheel based.

Wheel setups work with the controller BUT controller tunes don't always work for a wheel. Seeing you're on a controller, you can use any tune but stiffen the suspension up a bit.
 
Also try to play with diferent turning speed settings, untill you find the best one for your feel. There is no major patern about this, so u will need to figure it out by yourself.

Ive noticed that if you put your controller sensitivity up it will help a lot.

But if you put it down to -2, it'll be smoother. It's a bit jerky and rough if you put it up, not to mention your tires look like they're flapping in replays lol.

What do you mean.. Like entry speed to a corner or adjusting some slider or something like that?

I'm not too good with slightly tapping the analog stick to turn so I usually turn it fully. I have the sensitivity at 0 currently but I will try it at 7 to see if it makes a noticeable difference.

No, no, no... its a simple setting where you set your turning sensibility, from -2 till 7.

By the way i use 5, but i know good drifters who use the standard (0 or 2, im not sure) and people who says feels more confortable with -2 because simulates better a real car.

Like i said, there is no pattern for a major preference about this, so u will need figure it out by yourself.

EDIT: Im sorry. I didn´t readed the entire thread so i didn´t noticed that people was speaking about this already.

EDIT2: About ABS, i guess that most people use it at 1.

I'll give that a look. I've been very busy these couple days so I haven't had time to really try out any of the responses to this thread but I will do soon!

I just got the GT Planet app on my phone so it's easy to check up on the threads but I still haven't had time to apply any of these tip in the game xD
 
It is quite difficult to get your wheels locked and then just using throttle whilst using a DS3 controller. It's almost impossible. I haven't seen anyone actually that can do it.

It's possible and quite easy. When I learned on a controller, the first thing I learned was a donut without steering. Just full lock the steering then mash the gas, it'll keep going with just the gas when you let the steering go.

When your drifting a corner, stick to a high gear, lock your steering and just use the gas. It's good for hairpins.

I was under the impression that that only happened when you had "active steering" assist on. So if it was off, the wheels would lock with the analogue stick. :indiff:
 
Well, if you're looking for a car that doesn't need a tune to be able to drift just get the challenger srt8 TC. Keep it COMPLETELY stock tires and all. When you drift it obviously turn off all of the settings like TC and SM and switch to manuel. It's a GREAT car to learn how to drift with a controller!!!!

What do you mean? If you lock the analog stick left/right it isn't the same as wheel? I think you're wrong, Its the same amount of angle, it's just quicker on the DS3. They compact the 900 degrees from the wheel to a half an inch on the DS3.

You get enough angle with the DS3 to to a steering lock drift using only the gas. Its been done, not just an opinion!

Edit, see you still trollin. :lol:

Drifting with the fireblade or any other car where the front wheels are exposed all the time, i noticed that the game itself auto correct the angle in the front wheels depending your angle and horizontal G-Force, and no active stering assist was on. In pratice it doesn´t brings no pros or cons because it will not helps or give trouble to sustain angles, but when you try to catch that picture in full lock, maybe it can bring some headaches.

I saw your thread. Someone linked it to me. I used your S15 '02 setup and it was pretty fun. I ran it in Tsukuba but only got like 10k points.. Which sucks lol I stay in 2nd or 3rd most of the time.. Does that seem about right for that car?

Also, most of your cars aren't in the new dealership, are they?

10k would suck for me but for you may be awesome. Depends how skilled you are and since you said you are still learning than 10k is ok. Ya gears don't really matter usually staying in a couple the whole time is normal. As long as your drifting the whole time is what your trying to do.

A lot of cars are however there are more UCD cars in general so a lot of cars are from there. All the popular cars I tried to make as well as some crazy ones for fun. If you go to my site and click the YouTube link I have some videos up and one is me drifting in my first week with a RX-7 and you can see where I didn't drift and how it was just ok than another more skilled version in my Viper. That one the whole track is drifted perfectly which is what you want to do for max points. Just don't do any fancy spins like I did lol.

Oh and a couple tips is turn the racing line on and try to get pretty damn close to it the whole time while drifting. A lot of corners you want to come in from the far side than drift the inside and exit on the other far side.
 
I'm also using a controller for drifting and think that a good, "ergonomically" configuration of the controller is the key to success.

In GT1 & 2 i used the analog sticks for steering (left) AND accelaration/braking (right). With the pressure sensitive pad for the PS2 i used the arrows left/right for steering and x button for accel., square button for braking in GT3 & 4.

Then in NFS shift (yes i know it's arcade.......:sly:) i get used to another form of
driving/drifting with the controller and i still use it in GT5.


L2 - Brakes
R2 - Accelaration
Left Stick - Steering
Circle Button - E Brake
Triangle Button - Shift up
X Button - Shift down
Controller sensitivity - 0


The advantage of this configuration are:

- Since the R2/L2 buttons are bigger you have more control of the throttle and brakes. Feathering the throttle or holding one amount of speed is very easy. Same with the brakes.

- The thumb is free to shift down/up while drifting.


Maybe it is not as uncommon as i think, but it works for me pretty well and i hope it's helpful anyway. :)
