Yes! I just got my G2 drivers license. For all of the non-Canucks that means that I can now drive on the road by myself (except from midnight to 5am).
Now all I need is a car. Ah, the joy of being 16 and free!

Is there any specific things you are looking for in a car? Drivetrain, engine, fun factor, etc.

Realistically what kinda of cars can you afford. Compile a list and then allow others to throw opinions at you. Seems more logical.

I'd say a 90's Jeep Cherokee. Considering you get inclement weather where you live in Canada. Money considering the Grand Cherokee can be had with a V8. Making it a lot of fun to own.

Subaru is another great choice. Again they offer cars that loaded with fun. Even their non Racer Boy cars can be a blast.

You can drive between midnight and 5AM with your G2, I have mine now. The restriction are as follows:

-For the first 6 months with your G2, between 12AM-5AM you can have one 1 passenger under the age of 19 in the car.
-For the next 6 months, between 12AM-5AM you can have 3 passengers under 19 in the car.
-BAC must be 0 (durr since legal drinking age is 19 anyway)
-Everyone in the vehicle must have a working seatbelt. If they're under 16 and not wearing one, you're in trouble. If they're over 16 and not wearing one, it's their fault.

The passenger number restrictions do not apply if you have a G licensed driver in the passenger seat, or if the passengers are immediate family members. I'm just trying to clear up a misconception, a lot of people either think they can drive with nobody else in the car between midnight and 5AM, and a lot of people think they can't drive at all. It's not true at all, and easy to mix up.

As for a car, get a Civic, Corolla, Geo Prizm, Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. Great reliability and they can be found for pretty cheap. You don't really need 4WD to get around in the snow, I live about an hour south of Guelph, FWD and snow tires (snow tires are more important than drivetrain) have served me just fine this winter. Not enough power to get you in to trouble, but enough that you can pass and merge safely. It's your first car, it's about getting out of the house and having freedom, not about having an impressive car that you'll wrap around a tree.

That's awesome man. Your rules are a lot better than the ones my state adopted.

-For the first six months you can't drive between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless you have a work exemption.
-Then you go and get retested to get another license witch is unrestricted for another six months.
-Then you go and get retested again for your full on license.

I guess here, it's just a money game.

Lol, I didn't mean for this to be a car suggestion thread, but thanks for all of the great ideas! I'll probably just get a civic.

@noob616 Nice, I live 15 minutes north of Guelph, my parents didn't even put snow tires on this year because there wasn't any!
And I go fast on the track, so there will be no more top speed runs from now on.

Heh, and I thought I was the only one on here from Guelph. If you happen to see a dark green stupid loud Camaro with a Honda emblem hanging under the bumper, that's me!

Nice, I'll keep an eye out for it.
My moms car is a Honda CR-V with a number "6" on the back wheel cover and a Collison Racing sticker on the back window.
Dads car is a newish Chevy 2500HD Z71, Honda plates on the front.

A minor detail. :)
I could drive to Ganaraska Forest (3 hours), and go dirtbiking for a week with friends.
Something that I couldn't do before.

I'll probably have a car in a few months though.

Wow... you guys have it way better than us lol.

Driving age is 17 here, and if you've just passed and you want a car, your best option is a 1.2 or under. Sometimes you can strike lucky with a 1.4 like my friend did with his Focus. Insurance is just too high in this country. A Jeep for a 17 year old? Omg, insurance companies would just laugh at you. My friend with the Focus tried to get insurance for a Polo TDI - insurance didn't even quote him. Like I said, he struck lucky with the Focus. Oh, and snow tyres are banned in the UK, along with snow chains. The only snow tyres you're allowed here are some deep tread ones that might pull you along... but snow tyres with spikes will get you pulled.

Yeah we have it good, but you guys aren't trying to kill each other while your driving and can actually keep in the correct lane. (My dad is from Northern Ireland and he rants on about how Canadian drivers are some of the worst that he has ever seen.)

The insurance should be under $2000-3000 for an old civic or corolla.
And since gas is half the price here, there is a bunch of kids at my school that have lifted trucks with 6 litre+ engines.

That sounds like a lot of restrictions in Canada. I currently have an L license and shouldn't be driving on the road (but I do :p) and I have a test next Tuesday nd if I pass I will get my P license which means I will be eligible to drive on the road for no time limit and as many passengers as I want.

However, we in Malaysia have this point demerit thing. For a course of 24 months, we have 15 point in our bag and we shouldn't lose all the points otherwise your P license will be cancelled. As an example, not wearing a seatbelt is already a 5 points demerit!

How old do you have to be to get your license there?
You can get a License in Canada at 16 (but with full license driver in front seat), and if you do drivers training you can get a half-full license at 16 and 8 months. You can drive by yourself but not from 12-5am. My friend (who is an exchange student from Switzerland) said that they have to be 18 to get a license.:scared:

Your rules seem pretty lax, good for you I guess!

If I get any points (points are a lot more serious here, hit and run is 7 points, street racing is 6), my insurance will be ridiculously expensive.

Sounds tough in there. We have to be 17 to obtain the L (needs an instructor to drive on the road) and P (semi-full license) driving license. After 24 months from the date you obtain your P license and not finishing all your 15 points, you can obtain your CDL which is a full driving license. I think 10 years or more ago we have to be 18 to get a license here but for some reason they changed it for good.

Since I currently have an L license, if I got caught on the roadblock knowing that I drive on the road with the L license, I'm done. My license will be cancelled and I have to start the theory class and computer test and many more time wasting process all over again. I just have to be careful on the road though :p

Oh, so you're driving without a qualified driver with you? I don't want to think about what would've happened to me if I had done that. (Apart from parents disowning me (but it was ok to drive to friends house about 1km away))

So it seems like Canadians can start driving about a year earlier then everywhere else, but with severe consequences for a big mistake.

After I got my G2 I decided that I wouldn't drive illegally anymore, so no more speed runs or tire smoking. I can't get a job without a license and the risk isin't worth the reward. I would be totally screwed for life if I lost my license.

Yes, I'm driving without a qualified driver with me. It's not that everyday I will go out and drive - only times when I have to especially when it's urgent. Maybe sometimes go out for a drive just to keep me cool.

If I pass my test next Tuesday, I'll be allowed to drive anywhere I want. But that's if I pass the test. Wish me luck! :)

Consider the luck wished!
I was nervous for my test. I had about an hour to practice with my driving instructor before the test.
The test itself was supposed to take about 15-20 minutes, we came back after 10 and I thought that I had failed, but it turns out that we just got a lot of green lights lol.

Congrats. Now you just have to wait a year and you'll be completely free of the whole graduated licensing crap.

I think you can get a provisional license here at 16... but I'm not too sure. I know you're allowed to drive mopeds and small cc bikes here at 16, as long as you have the L plate. You're not allowed passengers on the bike though.

It really is easy for bikes here. You can apply for one here at 16 and it only took you a month to complete it and get a P. While you're still at L, you can ride a small cc bikes anywhere you want but no passenger is allowed. Ours is divided into 3 types of motorcycle license.

B - Motorcycle (any cc)
B1 - Motorcycle >500cc
B2 - Motorcycle >250cc

The cost to apply for each of type is different with 'B' being the most expensive. Most people will go for 'B' license straight away because as many regard it as a super-complete bike license and you can ride any superbike once you got the P. However, I'm not sure if we have those demerit points and specific time for a P license like the driving license...

Anyway, I passed my test 2 days ago! Now I'll get my license tomorrow :D

curiosity, the american license driver you can drive around? such as trucks, bus, tractors, bulldozers, bike? sorry for the stupid question because the italian license driver are limited!

Well, the Canadian license lets me drive a vehicle under a certain weight.
But I can't drive a bus, truck or tractor without getting a special addition to the license, so it is limited. A bike requires a different license.
