Driving Aids

i was curious about peoples overall oppinions on using driving aids. the other night i was driving the audi R8 race car. i decided to turn the driving aids off. i was spinning the tires all over the place. having the TCS completely off is what caused me the most problem. the ACS? (oversteer / understeer) set to off didn't really affect my driving. with the TCS off you really need to be light on the throttle, atleast till about late 2nd gear into 3rd gear. does that sound about right?

how do others get past the tire spins with the TCS off?

I generally use a tad TCS on really highpowered cars, (1 or 2 at the most), just as a precausion. I try to drive in such a way that TCS never kicks in, but sometimes it´s good to have it there, just as a safetymeasure.

ASM is just utterly crap for the most part. The only car I have driven that benefits from it in my hands is the FGT.

Use less throttle if the wheels spin. It can be done with a controller or wheel setup.

I myself prefer not to use any driving aids on any car, including the likes of the Formula GT, and modded Group C cars. It adds to the challenge and makes you a better driver! :)

I only use TCS on 2WD cars, FFs automatically get 5 minimum. I also use it on any vehicle with too much torque for it's own good(I've got some muscle cars that, when the LSD is removed, will easily burn out in top gear and sustain the burnout till they reach their 170MPH top speed, plus the tank car that's sitting in the corner next to the Model T. 'Nuff said about that thing.). As for ASM, I always turn oversteer off. Nothin's cooler than lettin the car's hind end slide out a lil', plus mine handle like 18-wheelers with flat steers with ASM on for oversteer. For understeer, I leave it at 10 minimum, on some I've been known to max it out. I just cant stand a pushy car. the ASM/TCS settings ensure I have one that'll do what I need. For 4WDs, I usually leave it off. My Dodge Ram will take off like a shot if I just let it idle, then at go floor it, and my Skylines are all but hopeless for a on-launch burnout(without a little aid called nos). But that's just me.

I'll agree with you Team666, The FormulaGT seems like one of the few cars that does benefit from the use of driving aids. In case you wan't a bit more info on this, I found a few threads for you (there are many more, just search if you want them):

ASM

Those driving aids...

Driving Aids Or No?

Driving aids whats the point?

Hope this helps,
FormulaGT

I lap just as fast with them off, DS2, smooth smooth butter smooth movements of the stick are the key, I feel it's quite a skill.

i usually drive with them on in higher power cars only. i learned this when trying to drive a fully performance modded f1 mclaren bmw race car... without the oversteer/understeer stuff it does loops at the slightest input... but that may be from something else, i'm no pro

The use of TCS is quite a fine thing for powerfull cars with a lot of torque.
It does not affect the handling much if you drive properly but is essential on cars like the Minolta. The other aids are crap they only make driving less real
and turn the boring.

The only cars i *sometimes* use TCS on are the Speed 12 and the FGT, for the rest i never use it.

i use 1-2 on the TCS, but with cars like my ford GT tuner car which the link to it is in my sig, i had to set it at 5 cause of the horrendus wheelspin

I usually recude my driving "aids" drastically to like one or two and it does not affect driving almost at all. I find cars get a little quicker and you become a better, smoother driver. On really hairy beasts a little of traction control helps a lot but you still will get wheel spin if not driving smoothly. My 2 cents!👍

If you want to run with the TCS set at Zero, shifting early (if you run Manual trans.) will help keep the wheelspin to a minimum. Shifting up at the first sign of wheelspin usually works. It won't be the fastest way, but it will save tires.

Yes I too used to be one that had TCS set to 3, 4, 5 and higher. With much persuasion form DarkElite and Team666, however, I have learned to drive without them! Keep practicing! That is the key...

When i started out i used to use 'em, but no longer do ever since i switched to my impreza, besides in the long run they only slow you down
