I tried the NASCAR series and Like the Wind last night for the first time. I'm a decent casual driver, I did fine on all the races...except Daytona. I can't drive smooth enough through the turns with the high-powered cars with my DS3. I also was never able to even get bronze on the NASCAR event running the outside line, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Suggestions...other than buy a wheel? Has anyone else with the same issue been able to tone down the twitchiness through tuning adjustments when using the d-pad?

I found that using the right analog stick for gas instead of X helped me tremenously on the Special event. I also passed Like the Wind using a fully tuned Minolta Toyota 88C-V. As for the Nascar one, I didn't even bother to do the last race because I hate Nascar and had enough of a lead in the championship that I was able to use the old start and quit trick.

A guy who made this thread on NASCAR winning setups got banned and deleted his post before that so it's hard to find but I had it tucked away =p.

Race 1

Front Downforce - 45
Rear Downforce - 45
Front Breaks - 1
Rear Breaks - 0
Front Ride Height - -30
Rear Ride Height - -30
Transmission/ Top Speed - 249MPH

Just keep telling bob to overtake and he will win by a huge margin.

Race 2

Front Downforce - 45
Rear Downforce - 45
Front Breaks - 1
Rear Breaks - 0
Front Ride Height - -30
Rear Ride Height - -30
Transmission/ Top Speed - 219MPH

There are certain passing zones to pay attention to.

Race 3

Front Downforce - 45
Rear Downforce - 45
Front Breaks - 1
Rear Breaks - 0
Front Ride Height - -30
Rear Ride Height - -30
Transmission/ Top Speed - 236MPH

Dont push bob too hard on this one, otherwise you will pit in on your last lap for a tire change and lose the race.

Race 4

Front Downforce - 45
Rear Downforce - 45
Front Breaks - 1
Rear Breaks - 0
Front Ride Height - -30
Rear Ride Height - -30
Transmission/ Top Speed - 224MPH

Watch the passing zones on this one -- A good idea is to coach from the "In Car/Bumper" view.

Race 5

Front Downforce - 35
Rear Downforce - 55
Front Breaks - 2
Rear Breaks - 2
Front Ride Height - 15
Rear Ride Height - -15
Spring Pressure - 18.5
Transmission/ Top Speed - 249MPH

Now that is good for A and B spec, but the last race on the oval in A-spec will take a ton of skill and is ahrd with that setup so I suggest you use this one for the very last race-

Downforce 35/50
Transmission 380 kph (236 mph)
LSD 60/60/15
Ride height -15/-15
Spring rate 18.5/18.4
Dampers (ext) 8/8
Dampers (comp) 4/4
Anti roll bars 4/4
Camber 2.0/1.0
Toe 0.00/0.20
Brake balance 1/0

Here's the post 9mine) you can bookmark, the setups are in the middle-

Thanks for the responses. Hopefully, I can now do better on my next attempt. I actually thought I would enjoy driving Daytona in GT5, but it just doesn't seem to lend itself the DS3 d-pad guys, particularly in the high-powered car races where you don't have much room for sloppiness.

Depends on your car for like the wind, 1st thing I would do is map acceleration to R2, and braking for L2. You can control your speed better than with standard "X" button.

I can't help with Nascar (because I detest it) but try this for like the wind
Should work with Furai or ZR1 RM (what I used)

Max downforce, front & back. Drop ride height down 1 on front and back. Set top speed to 247.

Just lay into the throttle, you will make the passes when in turns without braking while AI has to, draft while in the straights. You'll probably have to block a bit when in last straight but you should win easily by a car length or 2.

Hope this helps

Daytona is the most annoying track in GT5. I'm also using a DS3, and I find I'm only able to do it when I go around the inner part of the track at a snail's pace (especially, like you say, with fast'ish cars). Any throttle and I find myself twirling through the grass like a drunk ballerina.

I'm using the ZR-1 RM. I don't like the Furai because it's too light, fragile and unforgiving. I don't do well with cars like that (Elise, etc.). I don't remember what happened to me with the ZR-1, I think I got the lead, but made a mistake somewhere, got passed, and couldn't catch up in time. I also don't have the HP maxed, I've only got 7xx in it right now. I think I can win that one, it's the NASCAR one that may be the most difficult for me. Hopefully, the settings above will help.

Wish me luck...and stay away from Daytona tonight, it could be dangerous!

I have always used the right analog stick with GT games but on ovals I switch to L2 and R2 so I recommend this as well. You do not to brake on ovals, just lift, so this makes it a lot easier.

Max out your ZR1, you'll use it on the American Championship as well..
The setting the other guy posted were pretty good for NASCAR just watch yourself on the TRI oval section. If you get too aggressive they'll spin you

Good Luck

I actually won the American Championship with it last night in it's current form. What's up with the prize for that one! A tank car!?!? I immediately took it for drive around the High Speed Ring, crushing guardrails all the way! Since people were bitching about the NASCAR Nurburbring special event, we should have a Tank Car Nurburbring event! Fun!

The reason I said to max it out, is because that's about the best grind course.
If you do that it will take about 4 minutes for 119k in cash (forgot the XP)

And yeah the tank car is blows, but it's a fun novelty

Tank car of Volkswagen Bus, which would be worse lol? You can either not turn at high speeds or not turn at low speeds.

I wonder how long it would take to get the Bus around Nurburbring? That would be a one lap enduro, huh? At least I could stay on the track...I think.

I just got the HKS racing controller. Its a nice compromise if you don't have/want a wheel. There is a dial sort of control that feels like a wheel and makes it easy to hold a line on curves. Does awesome on ovals. Got it for $35 well worth it.

This got me thinking...so I started a "crappy driver" challenge thread in the Gran Turismo 5 forum. Take the challenge, if you dare.

Someone in one of the NASCAR threads suggested that you push the left analogue stick all the way forwards and keep pushing it all the time, and then roll it left and right to steer, when on the ovals.

This gives more control than just moving it left and right.

It worked well for me.
