Ok so I know I said I wasn't going to get one of these but I've decided sod it it's only money so I should be picking it up tonight, however, just been watching some clips on youtube and it seems to be really noisy! Is it a noisy wheel in general or are all wheels the same nowadays?

Quick responses would be great here guys as I'm going for it soon ...

It's not noisy for me at all (I don't even care about the noise). It's a really good wheel and that's whats matters for me, not the noise.

Yes there are quieter weels than the DFGT, but you will get used to it.

When you have the sound from the game going, you'll rarely even notice any of the noise. Besides...it's really only noisy to the point of being loud when you are trying to drift or recovering from oversteer. The G27 is a good bit quieter, but it also costs $200 more. For the money, the DFGT is a good wheel and really adds to the experience of the game.

Naturally it makes some noise, but nothing that stands out to me. I've had the wheel for about 4 months now and I'm very happy with it.

Ok guys thanks, I guess with it being the first time I've seen the wheel in action it does stand out lol, but if you can get used to it then thats fine :)

I've got a G27, my other half has a DFGT and I have to say hers is quite a bit noisier but other than that it's a good wheel.

If my G27 spontaneously combusted or something I would probably replace it with a DFGT.

Steve

It's a bit noisy, especially when you oversteer and need to kick the wheel back quickly, but you get easily used to it. No problems at all. the best money I've spent during the holidays.

I got used to the noise after a week or so... :)

only a few days ago when i ran my FGT on the nurburging (GP combined with the nordschleife) You could here the bumps a few rooms away so I've heard from my brother :D

right so ive got the wheel and well, im not overly sure on it as of yet if Im super honest, seems to make GT5 hard work lol. im still going to work at it though because i did a test run last night, Astra Super Touring Car, Standard on Racing Hards, ran a single lap on controller and ran a 1.15 which I then matched with the steering wheel after only two hours driving with the wheel.

Using the wheel & pedals is great and very natural its just the FFB I don't like but I've never been a fan of that in wheels lol.

im currently set up though on a collapsable dinner table with a 24 pack of Oasis stopping the wheel from rocking it about so that aint helpin lol! :P

Try fiddeling arround with the force feedback.

It will take some getting used to, but when you do it's so much better than a controller.

i have it set to simulator, power steering on with FFB set to 1. (I have to set it to one otherwise the table rocks everywhere lol!)

Good thing is I tried it last night (I'm 19 so I still leave at home atm) and managed to get both of my parents involved who initially didn't want a go. They are both into driving IRL anyway, and our cars are both in the game, the Hyundai Tiburon and the BMW 120i so a race around the top gear test track will be in order at some point lol! :P

The wheel is pretty noisy at times (as said when drifting) but its no deal breaker for me. I would advise you to buy a wheelstand or make something youreself to firmly attach the wheel to.

If drifting's your thing; dont buy the DFGT.

I will assume we are only talking about the rotational "grrrrrrr" gear noise when the wheel spins, not any chuttering or clunking type noises.

Don't let the above comments mislead you. It isn't just a small amount louder than a g27 (which is near silent) , its HUGE deal louder. About 1000x as noisy and im not overdoing it for effect. Its like night and day.

Im guess the reason people are saying its not that noisey is because they go easy turning the wheel. If you make fast turns of the wheel its a whole other matter, its louder than a drill spinning.

You are right snake it can be loud ... but ... racing normally on deep forest, suzuka, tokyo ... seemed to be relatively quiet ... loving the paddle shifters aswell atm ... very useful during rotation :)

I hope that was sarcastic.. if not; this is:

I love how i need to use a button on a 900° wheel to rip the handbrake while letting the wheel spin into full lock.

I play with headphones and all I hear is the sweet sound of all the racing cars and the screeching tyres *g* Btw, I find the sound alot more satisfying when using the headphones, since my TV lacks in bass.

Ragarding the DFGT, previous posters summed it up correctly. Pure steering isn´t loud but hefty force-feedback when over- or understeering can be.

no i steer properly so hands are 90% always in the right place so i can shift during corners without jumping over to the gear stick (which is a bit sensitive for my heavy right hand :P)

learn to drive properly without a handbrake :) i can race / drift without one so i dont see your problem at all.

thanks for commenting though :) (see! sarcasm! :D)

just to add though, the wheel & pedals are both nice to use and they are both very sturdy. the brake has more resistance than the throttle and both have a very nice feel to them. buttons work great aswell ... so it is a good wheel for anyone who is considering buying one.

for me though, im not keen on the FFB, Im finding you have to be driving smooth (which I aim for in real life so I am relatively smooth anyway) and then you have to work with the FFB, so Im guessing I'll adjust. As for the noise, well, it's bearable and you don't notice it whilst racing, its just between times lol.

Maybe it would have been helpfull to mention that i mostly drift in GT5.
That said: You show me how you keep your hands at ten to two (the "right" position) and using the paddle shifters on the bakc of the wheel while letting it spin into countersteer.

Example of what i mean:

A guy I race with has the older one (he told me it came with GT4), not sure exactly which model.

It sounds like he's doing an intensive carpentry course when we race...

I got mine for chrissy and while its got a little bit of noise its not that noticeable. And besides im concentrating to much and having such a blast with it that it doesnt really matter to me...Go pick it up now..you wont regret it :)

I've already got it lol, just doing grand valley endurance in my R8 LMS as we speak lol.

I'm getting more used to it and its getting better and better to drive with, still not sure about when I'll dare to go onto the Nurburgring with anything more than an Elise though lol!

ZSPaulus - I meant for racing not drifting, correct position of "a quarter to three" when racing, meaning you can turn the wheel 180 degree + without taking your hands off of the wheel, so your fingers stay on the paddles.

Drifting is completely different depending on how you like to hold the wheel. I haven't tried drifting yet so I don't know how I'll prefer, tbh, I don't think I'll enjoy drifting with the wheel.

There are a lot of complaints about drifting with the DFGT and its hard (imo) and i gave up after a bit

Yeh tbh I'm finding it hard to catch the car when it flicks out, just because the wheel wants to go the other way lol! Suppose it is motivation to do clean races lol :P

I think the noise depends on what you have it mounted to more than anything else. If it is mounted to a sturdy table or, in my case, one of the slide-out writing panels on my old desk, it makes a lot less noise than if it is mounted on a flimsy mount that amplifies the sound.

In any event, sturdily mounted it isn't too noisy.

HaHa! You gotta love it haven't you ... I go out, buy an £80 wheel, start to get used to it, get in the lead in a race online and boom ... yellow light of death! Oh how joyus lol! Looks like I'll be having a trip out tomorrow to grab some thermal paste and then we'll crack open the PS3 and see how we go :P

Thank god I backed up my save data this afternoon lol! :P
