Driving offroad in Willow Springs

I doesnt matter how powerful the car is anymore. Your wheels get "stuck" as soon as you leave the track.
No, as long as the option "Grip Reduction on Wet Track/Track Edge" is set to Low.

You can go very fast and do insane jumps on bumps and stuff.

Yeah, my kid loved roaming round in the desert, now that feature is gone.

Way to go PD.

Edit: I'll try the suggested option though.

Edit 2: No, they've ruined it. Poor show.

I've been waiting for this type of freedom for a long time. Not because I want to short 3/4 of the track, but when you run off-track and sail 1/4 mile out through the sand instead of hitting an invisible wall 10ft off-track it's sensational and even shocking, the first few times.
Great reality check.

Same here. Between GT Auto and Big Willow my 5yo would be entertained for a solid hour "testing which cars are best for off road". He of course has decided that like Rutledge Wood on Top Gear US it is a yellow Toyota Yaris lol.

First time he tried it after 1.04 he played for 10min, turned it off, made a big frown sigh and said "dad all my cars are broken I dont want to play anymore".

Damn you Kaz you just took my kids favorite toy! Lol

Also once he did go back to it the other day I found him (the giggling I heard was my clue) in an online room bashing into people.

Come on Kaz this is not good. Fix the desert! I'll keep him offline but you gotta fix the dirt for me.

And besides like everyone else has said... go watch a video of a car going off at Willow. It's quite a ride a good distance away from the track not at all like driving into a pit of marshmallows. One tire off track in the wrong place before could knock you out of the whole race and now it's not really a huge deal unless you're way off.

Was extremely disappointed while doing the Red Bull events today. I went a little outside on the GP/D and went from 4th to last because apparently it takes 12 seconds to get out of sand 4 feet away from the track.
So what happens when you do that at Willow Springs? By the time you get back on the track, you probably would have been lapped... I seriously want to delete my game data and reinstall to only 1.03, this is just awful. The only part of the game that allowed you to just drive outside of a track is no fun anymore.

Wait, the element of driving on the ground in the centre of the track is no longer interesting because they applied the same quicksand physics that you could find in the standard sand trap? I figured they left the track open like that so we could use it.

Hi

I'd like them to change it back too, plus I've heard that willow is more rocky & hard off the road in real life & not like beach of quick sand.

I guess they want people to stay on the track. I don't know if there was a problem with people cutting corners or something, but I don't really care if they did. If someone doesn't want corner cutting in an open lobby, then make it a lobby option. Same thing with forced off-track traction control, just make it an option.

I'm fine with off-road quicksand being forced on for time trials, but in any other case it should be an option.

Edit: The Schwimmwagen is still an alright off-roader. Minly because it didn't rely on speed in the first place. Quicksand seems to kick in at 30 km/h.

Yes, I was wrong, they completely changed it now. I suppose its because of shortcut issues or something like that?

You are still able to do some crazy jumps though. You need to get speed on the track and then quickly go to the jump

It is silly in my opinion, things were better the way they were before.

Having a race against friends, when someone doesn't see that you're beside them and lightly nudges a couple of your wheels into the grass/sand, it's like suddenly releasing a parachute in strong winds, whereas before you could maintain most of your speed and control and bring the car back on track, you know like in real life.

It needs changing, or at least an option to get rid of it, like the ludicrous forced TCS on any tarmac outside of the white racing lines. Too much catering to the casual audience only and not enough for the more hardcore player.

... into the grass/sand, ...

There is quite a difference between grass and sand! Try to drive offroad on Silverstone Stowe. There you have no problems of driving fast on the gras. Just on sand you are slowed down. They probably have different settings for grass and sand (and other surfaces). So all they have to do is change the settings from sand to gras in Willow Spring. Because I am rather sure that the sand in the desert is rather hard and easy to drive on.

Its pretty retarded what they did since sand does not act like this what so ever and now people cant chill or hang out in the middle of the track anymore or go for big air races.

PD screwed it up big time period.

I would like to know who from PD's staff approved this change.

if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think it's because of the shortcuts.

I thought that too and I agree. But it's really annoying when you just go off the track a bit by accident and you have no traction at all. For once they did something right by allowing you to drive full throttle and then they take it away... Frustrating.

Also, they seemed to already cover the shortcut thing by resetting you to where you went off. That is if you try to cut part of the course.

I think it was never a 'feature'. I think that one of the million things they left out of the game on release was the quicksand. We all got excited by something that was never supposed to be there at all, I don't think it's anything to do with shortcuts etc, it's just something that they didn't fit into the game at launch.

And what did you tell him about doing that? I ask as you sort of left it open...
I didn't realize first off that he was in my profile (his doesn't have online enabled) and had to explain to him that those are real people in the cars (well driving them anyway) and that if all he was going to do is crash other cars he wouldn't be allowed to play any games at all. Either way he's self proclaimed bored with it now and has gone back to his mod-nation until "if" the dirt is fixed.

Are you trying to tell me I didn't parent this well? Or did I miss your point?

Invisible wall are not right

But Velcro on the side of the road is just not realist either...

Kaz... stop, stap... stoooooopp

what are you doing?
