I'm using an old Driving Force wheel with paddle shifters and brake/gas pedals.
I'm happy with the set up,but I'm wondering if a newer wheel with 3 pedals and a shifter would add to the GT5 experience ?? A lot of the newer cars use paddle shifter auto transmissions anyway and not use the older H pattern style manual.

Does using a clutch pedal make the game better ?? I'm using a Wheel Stand Pro to mount my wheel.Does the shifter being in front of you instead of beside you feel natural ??

I am just going to say that it is a million times better haha. I went from a DFP to a G27 and I would never look back.

I'm a G27 user and frankly I post better time with the paddle shift than using the stick and clutch especially for high performance car. I've tested the time difference using car with around 450-500PP and it's less than 1 sec faster with paddle shift

Until the GT series makes the clutch work like it does in a real car, and not like an on/off button you are going to be just fine using paddles.

Does using a clutch pedal make the game better

for me I'd have to say maybe.

I use a G27 and the clutch pedal feels like a giant foot-operated button.

On.
Off.

Missing a gear can lose you a race too, and it's far easier to miss a gear on a G27 than in real life driving.

it does give a better driving experience when it all goes ok though.

I hate paddles. I never use them on my G27, the clutch is bad but its still better than using paddles imo. But you are probably gonna have a little slower lap times with the clutch

Using the clutch and shifter helps me with drifting because I like to clutch kick and I seem to be able to hit the right gears better. PD just needs to fix it so it doesn't miss shifts that should be good. Because of that flaw, I only use the shifter when I drift. During a race its almost pointless, cause you'll more then likely end up missing a shift because of the bug.

Even if the clutch is just On/off - it still puts the car into neutral, meaning it allows me to heel/toe and rev match through my gears when breaking into corners. Makes things like driving MR cars sooo much easier without having to deal with the extreme weight transfer during high speed breaking ("adding to the experience")

Also, a G27 just gives you more options on how "real" you want it to be. If I am in a Lambo that uses paddles- I use the paddle's. If I am throwin' a car around the track with a standard transmission, I use the stick.

And to answer you last question: The location of the shifter being so close to the wheel using the wheelstandpro (what I use) is a minor detail. It's still just a toy. And GT5 is still a game. Does the fact that the DFGT wheel is only a fraction of the size of a real cars steering wheel ruin the experience of driving it in GT5? I think not.

After getting used to it I can't play without it (when I'm racing normal roadcars with h-pattern shifters). It's slower, and there's always the possibility of missing a gear, but all the footwork and stuff associated with changing gear feels just great. Also having the shifter next to the wheel isn't that bad. Sure I'd prefer for it to be down and next to me (I should build some sort of stand, shouldn't be that hard) but the most important thing is the footwork when you can't just keep your left foot on the brake and right foot on the throttle, and learning the H-pattern.

I love it.

I use a G25 with a cockpit that places the shifter in a more traditional position. For me its made the experience much better. Note that I primarily drive vintage cars and Kei cars unmodified. Even using the clutch and H-shifter is significantly slower. I cannot shift nearly as quickly as I can using the paddles, especially when I need to shift down 2 or more gears. However, I still use the clutch when racing 80% of the time. Its all about the experience for me.

I bet using a clutch pedal will provide you with far more delight than ever, if you really feel you're dissatisfied with absense of shifter along with vogue for interiors of cars.
