Hi, anyone dared to switch off the HUD while driving yet?
After I got settled in with the change from controller to wheel, I thought this might be a new challenge for more realism, and at least to me, it feels great.
Obviously works best with Premium cars, but I find that I appreciate the differences between the cars much more now, trying to get used to the differing gauges layout and interiors instead of concentrating on the same (HUD) layout for every car.
Also, it forced me to concentrate on actual braking points on the track, instead of cheating with the "recommended gear" display on the HUD.

And it doesn't seem to be slowing me down, got the Gold in the Seasonal Events Tsukuba time trial on my first try.

So, I was wondering if anyone else actually tried that yet, and perhaps it's a cool idea for some of those who haven't. :)

Regards,

Robert

I do drive with all of the HUD off from time to time...
But mostly only in the longer races like endurance.

Premium Yes ,Standards Depends on what Track I race in 👍

I'll have to try this, after all. After reaching 40-40 you need to find new challenges. 👍

Often, when I want to just enjoy driving! :D But on hot laps, I keep the time visible on premium cars. For endurance races, or when I'm driving standards, I turn the tachy on as well ;)

I think I might give it a go never thought about doing it

Me and one of my good mates went down La Sarthe at night without HUD. I was in the 2J and he was in the Toyota 70 racecar (both have no head lights..) this was the most fun I've had in a long time on this game and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to have a laugh with a mate :)

I've been doing it almost exclusively lately. Love it! Having to look for cues in the road as opposed to peeking at the map; lack of gear suggestion etc. is all great. ABS off, cockpit view; gorgeous. My times have gone to hell, but I figure it's closer to how I'd really drive these cars. I've even started doing it in online races (shuffle mostly; still getting beaten badly), much more challenging but also much more fun!

I definitely recommend it.

speedo on for standards speedo of for premium

Rest off, except the only bit I keep on is how many laps i've done (always)

I only drive w/o the HUD if I'm not in an Enduro, otherwise I have only the tire wear, the meters, standings, position, and laps up. But when I do have the HUD off, it's truly remarkable. I do it in both standards and premiums. Though I don't have it pulled down a lot, since I race at the bonnet cam.

Been driving like this for 6 months or more.

Switched off everything but times and drivers list when I switched to racing in cockpit view. Since then I drove exclusively like this, even in online races. It's so much more fun. After some time you even get used to feel how your tyres are doing without having an indicator. Only when I do LSD-tuning I will turn the hud on, it's a little more precise than just feeling it.

Whenever i play in 3D (about 50% of the time) I turn then entire HUD off. It's distracting and not well implemented in 3D.

With premiums I always have it off, standards I usually have the gauges visible but not much else.

I like getting in a grocery getter of some sort, setting the 24hr Nurburgring to max weather, and max time progression, turn everything off and then simply go for a drive.

Don't worry about time, just take a drive and enjoy what's going on. When you're windshield is wet, and the rising sun breaks through the clouds, it's pretty magnificent.

Best way for me. All assist off. Since day 1 of GT5.

Only if I'm in cockpit view

I only do it in Cockpit view when during enduros (which is most of the time that I race). I still have to turn it back on from time to time to see what lap I'm on. I wish they would leave the lap number on the top.

I use the HUD for timing, rpm, andl track position, but no braking indicator for me. I found myself to be faster relying on feel and braking points. HUD brake indicator was always a distration and usually caused me to brake either too early or found myself trying to cheat it and run too deep into a turn. Going without it helped me learn to rely on my judgement.

I find myself faster altogether without the HUD on. Allows me to focus purely on putting the car where it belongs, whereas if the HUD is on I'm constantly glancing at my sector times, map, etc..

When racing i nearly always use the HUD but when just driving it's nice to turn everything off and enjoy the ride.

I often find this as well. The more I think, the worse I drive. So many times I've run wonderful races for an hour or two or three and then I'll start trying to strategize while I'm driving and break my car right then and there(ok, not BREAK it after that long in GT5 but that's a different topic).

I often have a hard time turning it off completely in GT5... I just always want to see my times, or to have the minimap on to avoid traffic, or to have the tach on in standards, or to have the tire display on in enduros. I do drive with it off every chance I get. Much more fun if not faster.

I wish there was a button to toggle it to check those few things you need to see now and then, or at least every lap a guy like the rFactor guy: "all right, that was a two-forty-eight-point-one-six."

Almost always drive with the entire display off. Without the HUD, lap number, timers, etc., the driving experience feels much more immersive to me. I only use premium cars and the cockpit view. With other views or standards, I think most would want the HUD.

I took off the drivers list immediately and then the map and suggested gear. Now I drive with just the basic gauges. The suggested gear allows a novice driver to quickly learn new tracks and jump from car to car easily, so I really liked having it in GT4, but you're better off without it. After I got used to it not being around I felt more like I was driving a car, I became more focused on actually driving. Without any HUD active I'm more prone to mistakes though.

In short I agree with reduced/eliminated HUD being less distracting and more immersive.

12 months on and I don't miss the HUD at all.
I watch the road & mirrors instead of the map, actually listen to the engine and wheels, and count cars to work out my position. Once or twice I've pushed too hard on a seasonal, chasing the leader only to find out it was me! :dopey: A recent update that added gamer tags despite the HUD being off is super, sometimes forgot I was in an online lobby and was less than courteous.

Missed the apron strings initially, now I'm in love with cockpit view. The standards are that much more cosy too - just need windshield wipers puhleeze..

I turn the HUD off when I'm using my G25. But when I'm just using DS3, I'll have it on so I don't forget which gear I'm in (Except if I'm using a P car with the current gear displayed on the dash) ^^

I only use the HUD that you can't otherwise see clearly in the game, such as speed and revs.

Always without HUD - I am happy, I don't see a video game hud, when driving real cars either.
I cannot really understand, what it is, that we get less HUD only piece by piece - I mean, we finally got the solution, to turn of certain elements of the HUD (annoying list for example), but there is NO WAY of just displaying the essential HUD elements for driving, such as speedo and tachometer ONLY (no fancy turbo boost gauge, no girly selected gear display, no childish lap counter, no annoying split times on the wind screen)

Is this supposed to become the ultimate driving simulator or is this still the ultimate driving video game?

I love the aspect about PC racing sims, that every bit and detail can be tweaked to no end by the individual without waiting for manufacturers, to understand, what people want and implementing it in patches.

I always drive with the HUD off, unless its an endurance event, where I need to pay attention to tire life, and fuel, I just like to turn it off for a more realistic feel/look.

HUD off is amazing! I always use it, the screen looks so much more clean and I can concentrate better.
