Think your photos are save on the cloud?

Well google: site:http://www.dropbox.com/gallery

To resolve the leak, simply delete the 2 files created by the site (Public folders)

Or zip your files with a password

No google the whole, beginning with site, not the url the page made automaticly

Ooh I see. Well if you put your photos in the Public folder you are given a warning that it is possible for people to access those images without you actually sharing any links. If you want your images private then don't put them in a public folder.

Ahh ok.
I don't use it.
Just read it and want to "warn" some potential users here.

Warn us about what?

Images placed in the Photos folder automatically create an online gallery viewable on the Dropbox website, it's a documented feature of Dropbox (see http://www.dropbox.com/help/18). Neither the program or the website state that the galleries are private, so if someone puts photos they don't want anyone to see in the Photos folder then it's their own fault if someone comes across them. Same deal goes for the Public folder, although that's arguably more private than the Photos folder as you can't access any of the files stored in there without the link.

Am I strange because the only reason I actually save photos online is to share them with people?

Maybe it's just me... but when I want to keep pictures private, I save them on my hard drive. :D

So just to makes sure I understand here:

If put something in my public folder it's possible that someone can find the files through a google search?

....On Dropbox.

From what I understand.

Yeah, on dropbox of course.

Isn't that sort of what the public folder is for? The only time I stick anything in that folder is when I want to show something to people. The name of the folder is "public". If you have anything you actually want to keep private, don't put it online, and definitely don't put into an online service meant to share fiiles.

I guess I never saw it written out anywhere that files could be found this way, but it doesn't really surprise me much at all.

Sharky: Yes you can also access the other files in the Public via an other search.
The photo galleries (stored in photo folder) can also be protected via a link.
Most of the albums you find with this search are classed as private.
So with this you can access them, while the user thinks they are secure

Dropbox is also a cloud service, not only a sharing platform

Azuremen : Nice constructive comment 👍

The folder is called Photo not Public but both serve as upload folder for dropbox.

To access the public folder you need to enter this :
site:http://dl.dropbox.com/

Your welcome. As everyone who has pointed out here that uses dropbox, this is basically stating the obvious. From their Read Me in the Photos folder

Dropbox
Dropbox photo galleries allow you to share photos with anyone (even non-Dropbox users). These photos will be presented in a photo gallery that is viewable online.

Step 1: Make a folder inside the Photos folder, and give it a name (this will be the name of your photo gallery)

Step 2: Put photos inside the folder you just created.

That's it! Now you can view and share this photo gallery online by going to http://www.dropbox.com/photos

GTP users beware, anything you post on this message board is publicly viewable.
