Duesenberg brand to return with a bang

January 2007 will mark the return of the legendary Duesenberg brand in the United States, with the launch of a new four-seater called the Torpedo Coupe. The company says the automobile will be built around “revolutionary new power plant” known as the CEM. The engine is air-cooled and self lubricating, forced-air inducted (supercharged), 12 cylinder, double ended, ported, multi-fueled, four-stroke engine with a calculated 70 MPG and 300 horsepower from an economical 100 pound package measuring 18 inches in diameter and 24 inches in length. Duesenberg last made cars in 1937. At the time, its vehicles were among the fastest on the road. The Leftlane Perspective: If Duesenberg can return from a 70 year hiatus and build one of the most revolutionary cars on the road, it will be a proud day for America’s auto industry. Blazin's Note: That engine seems a bit far fetched, but what am I to say that it can't happen?

I think it's supposed to be a modern interpertation of the original Duesenberg from the 20's or 30's.

The design is nice, but the grill is, to be nice, hideous. And I wonder how they can get that much MPG out of anything short of a VW Lupo TD.

Well January 2007 means next year's auto show circut, more then likely LA or Detroit this this will be unveiled. But I'm betting more info is sprinkled around throughout the year.

I'm a bit confused about the engine, but I'll just nod my head and say "ok!"

Well remember these are just drawings of the concept, I bet the actual car will look stately. This kinda reminds me of a civilized Exlaro...that Maybach thing from over the summer.

Looks OK, fairly elegant, but:
Needs 2 headlights instead of 4, and the taillights need to be slightly longer and much thinner.

That´s what I thought too. Kinda like the Exelero, but a little more subtle. Nice though, wonder what the pricetags will be? :scared:

It reminded me of the Exelero too, I think for a modern Duesenberg this design is pretty good, remember as Blazin said, this is just a sketch, the details are always highlighted more in sketches, or appear so. The real car will probable look a lot better.

Sounds like a pipe dream. With a very long pipe.

18x24 sounds like something between 2-3 liters in displacement. Maybe four motorcycle blocks welded at the sump?

12 Cylinders and a supercharger? Is this another engineering for the sake of engineering thing?

Again, sounds like a very long pipe....

Looks like a morgan. If they do get a engine with 300 hp and 70 mpg I will be astounded. They will get max props from me if they pull it off. I just wonder will it still be uber luxurious?

It's a Duesenberg, of course it will be luxurious.

Kind of statingt he obvious , they were such a premium company in their time, it'd be great to see them successfully return.

...Maybe they can find out what happened to the GM V12 project...

By the way, what ever did happen to the GM V12 project?

I've just noticed, it's a 4 seater, how the hell is that a 4 seater, do the rear passengers sit in the boot? The design will probably undergo quite some re-design with the cars proportions at least over the next year. As I said earlier though, original concept sketches are rarely not over proportioned.

Motor sounds cool, but the car is disgusting looking. It's a disgrace to the SJ.

Who exactly has the cash to fund this crazy project?

I'm pretty sure this isn't a "comeback" or "return". I've never heard of Duesenberg before, but I'm pretty sure that the new Duesenberg is a totally unrelated company just using the name.

300hp engine that gets 70mpg sounds really nice. Unfortunately, I think it's going to be either a:
a)b/s
b) is a new tech that's so expensive, you won't make it back on saving your $$$ on gas.

Kinda like hybrids?

Noone who has the money to buy a duesenburg or even a proposed retrovival one, gives a flip about gas mileage. Maybe a couple "environmentally conscious" movie stars will only so that they can claim they are saving the earth in style.

The two tone looks pretty bad and 300 hp isn't gonna go far against any italian or german luxo coupes.

For luxury touring, actually, even 200hp is enough. Who needs a limo that'll spill your champagne every time the driver twitches the gas pedal?

I like almost everything about it except what L4S said...where the hell are the backseat passengers going to sit COMFORTABLY? Either way, I like the idea of old car companies coming back I just hope this pipedream of an engine is all it's advertising itself to be. Unfortunately this car won't sell more than 15 cars here in the states...Americans ususally don't like outlandish looks to this extreme. Too bad, it's definately different and not the same old style.

Yeah, it's too bad that the only worthwhile reason for developing fuel-efficient engines and hybrids is so that you can save a buck or two. 💡
