I've taken just a couple Photomode shots, but it's been more fun than I thought it would be. So while I probably won't make a huge effort here, from time to time I'll post them up when I do.

The first two came from some OLR competitions I've participated in over at the Grassroots Motorpsorts forum. The Camaro was from a GT4 event I organized honoring the real-life $2007 Challenge, and most of you have seen it already. The MR-S is my entry from a followup competition that someone else put together.

From left:
1) Grassroots Motorsports $20070 Challenge entry - Chevy Camaro SS (edited)
2) GRM $50k October Challenge entry - Fujiwara Tofu Toyota MR-S (edited)
3) Chevy Corvette Gran Sport (not edited)

Great, another newcomer! Welcome, feel free to look around and... and... well, damn.

I couldn't help noticing the black outlining on the grey parts of the MR-S, an attempt to a cartoon style?

Yes, kind of. I also had the black fill set to some transparency so the highlights would show through from underneath, and I didn't like how that looked woth no definition edging it. So I figured I'd go for a little manga look, though it's a little stronger than I wanted.

I really like the Toyota shot. Very clean, and the lens flare (?) completes it very well, as well as the Japanese letters. 👍
Hope to see out more pictures, and what Image Editing Program do you use?

Thanks, guys. The upper one was done in an ancient copy oh Photoshop 4 or so. The lower one was done in Photoshop 7. The added stripework actually looked better at the original exposure, but I lightened it overall to bring out the detail in the rear wheel. Unfortunately that brought out a little too much detail in the Bunta stripes.

I appreciate the comments. I'm enjoying P-mode but I do find some of the settings a little clostrophobic.

Nice work Duke, really like both of the shots, especially the MR-S Spyder (or MR2 to others). Well i was wondering, do you have a gallery before this? I mean its kinda late having a gallery but i guess its up to you if you want to do it or not..... well i'll be looking forward to your updates as well. :)

These are the first two shots I've ever taken in Photomode, and they were both taken in the last 2 weeks.

If you're referring to Photo Travel, then I wholly agree with you. If you look at my gallery (green dot in my sig) you'll find that none of my shots were taken in that mode. The detail is better in Photo Travel though.

New image added.

How do you get a crisp car but motion-burred background?

And I think I figured out how to use manual focus, but I'm not sure. I aimed the camera at my focus point and clicked Square (or whatever the proper button is) and it clicked. But then when I reframed the shot, the reticule moved with the center of the frame instead of staying on the car where I clicked it. However, the MF light was lit.

Is that correct? Thanks.

it depends on the angle. most side shots are just finding the right ap and shutter speed settings. but, more complex/frontal shots require photoshop radial/zoom blurs.

when you focus on a certain spot in a picture and the reframe it, itll still be focused on the spot you told it to be focused on.

[edit - another good method is to take two pictures. set one to have a good motion blur on the back round and on the wheels. then another with shutter speed at it highst speed so that it looks like a still frame and merge the shots together.]

Thanks, [es]. I didn't think about compositing a picture. Another question, though:

Are you limited to the preset camera viewpoints when you're on a photodrive? Because I've seen some shots where the camera is quite high up, looking steeply down at the top of the car, but I couldn't adjust the POV that far.

Thanks!

That is only possible with some specific locations on certain tracks. You freeze and search the camera views. If you don't have one of those after just a few, forget that spot.

Also, the angle you're talking about is usually obtained only on the replay's broadcasting camera, when you're viewing the replay normally. But remember to see a few laps of it, because camera angles change with every lap. Smaller circuits may give you 4 laps all with different angles on each, while Nurb will ony give you 2.

Hope this wasn't too confusing... 👍

And remember to increase brightness when shooting on photomode. To the max on phototravel and AT LEAST 5 steps on tracks.
It will help a lot. I've done some tests on this, shooting the exact same image on different brightness levels. Darker images have less data (meaning less quality and detail) than brighter images.

Yeah, I usually set my exposure up to about +3 in sunny pics.

Can you take pics during a regular replay? I thought you were limited to Photo Drive and Photo Travel. But I didn't know that there were multiple camera sets by lap. I'll definitely investigate that.

Thanks for the tips!

You should try some higher values and see how they come out on the monitor, you'll probably be surprised.

And yes, just not immediately after the race. You just save the replay, and while watching it just press 'select' at anytime like you do in Photodrive sessions.

But I didn't know that there were multiple camera sets by lap. I'll definitely investigate that.

Just in case you didn't know, pressing L3 will speed up the replay. I didn't know about this for so long! :dopey: L3 will also keep smoke up longer, if that's what you're going for.

not a bad set at all. the toyota, like everyone said, is a real hit. could be a little more brighter, but still a good pic altogether. the rims dont really go with the car. but who cares, you made up with a good photo :)

Well, both the rims and the darkness are part of the back story. I made the MR-S into Takumi Fujiwara's tofu-delivery AE86 from Initial D. So it has the appropriate rims (took me 27 elapsed days to get to them in the rotation) and it's shot at dawn in the Japanese suburbs after an early-morning tofu run.
