I've been trying to find an answer to this answer on Google multiple times, but can't seem to find the answer. I apologize for putting this here, but this is the best place on the web to get my answer without having to sign up for another forum just to ask one question, so thanks in advance for helping me out.

So, on the PS3 XMB, while looking at your friends list, as you scroll through each name on your friends list (including your own name), there is a star icon with a trophy in it and a number next to that icon in the upper right of each person's box you highlight. What does that icon mean and what does the number signify?

Thanks again. :)

It's their level, basically the higher the number the more trophies they have collected.

That's their PSN Trophy level... every trophy you collect goes towards this total uses an RPG-style level system where more "XP"/Trophies are needed to level up

OK, cool. I'm at 5 and have the highest number out of my friends. What's the limit, and what is this icon actually called so I can do some more research?

Thanks for the help gents. :)

and the higher the level the more trophies you need to get to the next.
all four trophy types are weighted differently for your Level/Exp Gauge.

Highest level is whatever the total number of trophies = at the current time, there's no limit to it. It's not actually called anything... trophy level icon?

I wonder why some people really care so much about that number. I never understood what's so great about it... All trophies tell me is that you just did something, Trophy hunters seek games that have easy goals and that's just even worse.
