Why the heck are so many big companies seemingly forcing AI down our throats?

I hear AI is insanely resource intensive, and yet, I can't seem to find a way to turn off AI "assist" when searching with Google or Instagram. How the heck is AI supposed to be profitable or otherwise beneficial to these companies when they're expending so much energy per search, especially with the general distrust and backlash from the general public?

I feel like I'm missing something super obvious here, but I can't for the life of me figure out the what and how.

Sounds like you're asking for Opinions about a Current Event to me.

It would be nice for it to actually sod off and not be enabled per user preference though.
If I remember right, there was an option to use the AI search & answer function when it was first introduced. I didn’t know it had become a staple feature. I actually benefit from the summaries quite a lot, so it hasn’t bothered me, also most of my searching is image search; my brain responds better to images than text.

Money is the short answer.

The longer answer is that AI is the hot new thing so companies need to push it to make them seem like they're keeping up with the latest tech. Bigger companies like Google are pushing it because the users are the product. We're training the AI so it can get more accurate so then Google can turn around and sell that AI to smaller companies to use so that those smaller companies can say "look at what we have."

AI will likely fizzle out when the next shiny thing comes along and it'll end up like VR, something that exists but isn't exactly useful for most of the population.

That and they also want the brand association. Google/OpenAI/etc all want their AI offerings to be what people associate with the term "AI" so they can be dominant in the market and control where the technology goes and take in all the profit.

I don't think AI will end up being a fad, I see it more akin to computers in the 80's. It's likely going to become a staple piece of technology.

I agree with this. I don't think its quite up to the hype being put out there, and I don't believe AGI is going to come out of this type of AI, but it is extraordinarily useful as it is.

What happened to the official America thread and the one about the war between Russia and Ukraine? If they're still there, I can't see them for some reason.

AI is just another way to say: Half-assed software in permanent beta, so we can reflexively blame all of its faults upon its existence.

Personally I think its great that the sections have been removed, gives everyone a good mental break and ponder rather that spewing pent up frustration that should have been kept inside... Not everything has to be spoken out...

Let things play out for now...

GTP isn't going to solve anything for everyone... Let's just take the back seat and ride along...

Hopefully things will be resolved in the most human way possible...

Watching some footage of a plane being prepared for flight from the 60s with the other half and I came up with a good question:

There is an ATC system worldwide which keeps track of aircraft - both small and large craft (presumably excluding hot air balloons) - and guides them around pre-planned flights to avoid each other. I'm assuming that this would exclude fighter jets and other military aircraft for the obvious reason that you wouldn't want unfriendly powers knowing where your planes are, but how would you give information to civilian aircraft to avoid collisions because I'm sure that the 18.45 to Alicante doesn't want to climb 20,000ft just to bump into a Typhoon?

Military planes during take off and landing might "cross paths" with commercial planes but during flight, they are 15,000 feet higher - 35,000 vs 60,000 feet.

Along those lines...

Why is the right so driven to propagate obvious falsehoods? Is it just mental illness or is there more to it than that?
This. This is what I was talking about.

NYT's official socials "broke" (it wasn't breaking as such, this is just to say that they first addressed the incident independent of other accounts) news of the incident at 8:45 Saturday night, just nine minutes after it happened. As of 8:52 Saturday night, the NYT website had a dedicated page with live coverage of the incident. It's still there and, as is their usual practice with live coverage of major news events, there has never been a paywall.

This particular deception requires that individuals disregard everything but the Sunday Edition, as if that's their only means of publishing coverage. And wouldn't you know that the Sunday Edition has a print deadline of 8:00 Saturday night. There's a small amount of flexibility if they can break something shortly before deadline and need time to make copy, but that's rare anymore because now we have the internet.

That broad isn't some rando, by the way. That's the wife of nativist vermin and presidential advisor Stephen Miller.

She made so many attempts to get Grok to side with her that NYT could have changed the front page.

I know that the main Sydney papers used to be on the street by 7pm Saturday night. They still go to print before a day of test cricket is done at 6pm.

Stephen apparently thinks she and their unborn child make an excellent human shield.

As for my own dumb question:

According to the NYT, we're running out of munitions and can therefore drop airtight falsehoods on perceived enemies, because there's always a cheap and inexhaustible supply at any moment. If that should ever need rationing, there's always media hype.

I don't know the person involved, but I can give the benefit of the doubt and say that perhaps she has no clue about print lead times. Not defending a position, just wondering about ignorance, fully admitting that I am completely ignorant myself of her history and past posts.

It still requires that one completely ignores live coverage on the website and major updates on socials. The implication is that the story's absence on the print edition's front page demonstrates an effort to downplay the incident. Live coverage on a dedicated page viewable without subscription is not downplaying.

The current senior United States Senator representing Utah, an individual that has on multiple occasions made the nomination short list for Supreme Court Justice, joined in on the deception.

I went and found the tweet. It got community noted to reflect the print deadline facts and she continuously pushed back on it. It was not an honest misunderstanding of print deadlines.

When one insists on "doing my own research", it's sometimes exclusively a thesaurus.
"The Bah-bul is mah fact checker". Can I get an amen?

Could the tongue-twister "She sells sea shells by the seashore" refer to Mary Anning?
That is exactly who it refers to as she was left out from contribution to the Geology society of London due to her gender.

If there's ostensibly such thing as an Alpha Male, is there a level that can surpass that, otherwise known as Alpha Male 2? And then, is there a way to go even further beyond? When are Tate and his cronies going to fight Majin Buu, anyway?

(The joke is how manufactured all this "alpha male" crap is. Reminds me of kids doing make-believe on the playground.)

Prime Alpha, I would imagine. Google also suggests "Sigma" and "Giga Chad".

I'm too much of an Eldar Millennial to know what any of that means, though.

If Chris Kyle could see everything through his sniper scope, do you think he could see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

You might want to review the first post, and reimagine whatever it is you're asking through the lens of "things you don't know about and may be perceived as being a bit dim for asking" rather than "lol memez".
