Duplicating cars?

In online lobbies, when in rooms that people like to trade in, everyone talks about duplicating their cars. How is this done?

I'd assume it's done by saving your file to an external drive, sending the car to someone, then reloading the save that still has the car.

That's pretty much it, but it wouldn't be trading if you didn't lose the item you are trading now would it?

Since there's no trading in GT5, only a Gift option, then you're not really trading anyways

To answer the OP (welcome to GTP, by the way), it's what S2 said: back up your save, send car, restore save. You can even do it with a second account of your own creation, though there are still those daily trade limits.
