The sensationalist UK rag DailyMail reports mystery dust storms sweeping the world this year.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-world-year-grounded-flights-blotted-sun.html
"This year has seen a rash of massive dust storms around the world that have led to travel chaos and blocked out sunlight - but experts cannot pinpoint the reason behind the spate.
This week incredible footage showed the moment an unusual 'apocalyptic' dust storm, known in Arabic as a haboob, struck Belarus, turning day to night, and China has suffered four massive sandstorms since the start of the year."

There is considerable research indicating dust storms are associated with anomalously strong electrical fields, and that a positive feedback loop can lift more dust and make the field even stronger, then raise even more dust, etc.

But are these reports simply due to better information gathering and reporting, or is something novel really going on? Are there really more and bigger dust storms than usual?

Obviously, drought conditions can lead to dusty conditions, and there is a historic drought in the western United States. But is the drought world-wide?

Can you solve this puzzle, or add to it?

Travel chaos, we must have moved out of the house prices season. God bless the Daily Snail and those who sail on her.

I had to be that guy...

Of course. I saw that coming. As for the real dust storms, I haven't heard about them, and I haven't been involved. Maybe Darude is responsible and is punishing everyone who says a particular song is Sandstorm when it's really not. I am guilty, but I have not been hit. Yet.

I remember in 2009 Sydney had a crazy sandstorm that made it near impossible to breathe outside you could only see a few meters ahead of you and the sun was Red.
