CD's work just fine, Ive played DVDs on it before but it wont do anything now. Restarted it a couple times, is there something Im missing? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Not new at all, but like I said it has worked with DVDs before, including the one I tried to play today. I cannot see the DVD in my computer. The drive just make some noise like its trying to read it, but nothing ever happens. As soon as I put in a CD though, suddenly its firing on all cylinders. Eject, try DVD again, nothing.

Are you sure it's a DVD player? Does it have the DVD logo on the drawer door?

Can you see files on the DVD in Explorer? If you can see files but not play the movie, then you're missing the DVD player application or codecs.

In Device Manager, does it show as a DVD drive or just a CD? Actually, I've never seen a drive misidentified there, but I suppose it could happen somehow.

I started it up this morning with a DVD in the tray. There was an audible clicking sound(hardware not coming out of the speakers), but no play. Yes, it has the DVD logo. And as I said before, it has played them on previous occasions. I can hear if it starts to spin a CD, but the DVDs dont even get to that point. Its like it just gives up on trying to read DVDs. I tried opening my DVD player from start and that will come up, but it wont do anything cause it doesnt know there's actually a DVD in the tray. Im guessing its toast. Anyone for cheapest fixes?

Yeah its definitely tanking...Its not playing CDs reliably anymore. The laptop is at least 5 years old, so it doesnt surprise me.

Lens was last cleaned. . . . . . ?

Use one of those discs with the little brush on one of the tracks.

Don't need a liquid. Just the Q-tip. Best really is those brush discs, just gets the dust off.

Do you honestly want to fry your laptop with liquid? Get a CD with the brush underneath. Radioshack should have them for sale.

Yeah I was just going to pour alcohol all over my laptop and hope it solved all my problems. Thank you so much for showing me that wouldnt be a good idea.

You need to remember that electrical devices do not like most liquid's and will most likely fry because you are allowing two devices to conduct inside the laptop that they are not supposed to. If the brush disk option does not work you are just gonna have to get a new DVD drive. I presume that your laptop has a IDE drive since it is 5 years old so I suggest this drive here.

Thanks! I had no idea that you weren't supposed to get electrical things wet! That explains why none of my cell phones work underwater!

I'm all for sarcasm, but you might want to dial it back a hair, seanyb. 👍

Yeah, maybe. I apologize nick. It didn't seem that you understood me the first time and you've taken everything I said literally so I had to go all the way to get you to realize I'm not retarded and never intended on ever soaking anything electrical, my laptop or otherwise, in any liquid. A damp q-tip will not fry a laptop. I would really have to go overboard to do any damage. My dad told me once after I talked down to someone, "Don't bring your integrity into question by questioning someone else's intelligence."

Now that that's settled, did cleaning the lens fix anything?
