Hello, me again :)

It seems that I am creating quite a few threads in here at the moment! Perhaps I should just start a "DQuaNs computer questions" thread!

Right. I have just installed a DVD-RW drive. The drive did not come with any software, so I just plugged it in and away it went.

When I try to open a dvd in Windows Media Player, it says it cannot play the file. It advises me to open my display settings and lower the resolution and colour quality, which sounds a bit stupid. I have the most up to date drivers according to Windows, and can't find any on the Sony website.

So my questions are: Is there any way to fix this so that media player will play the movie?

And what FREE software would you all reccomend for both watching dvds, and burning cds/dvds as i have no burning software other than Windows.

Thanks

Dunc

WMP should play DVDs straight out of the box. It works on both my DVD drives without me having to install anything. :odd: Maybe you could try another media player, such as Media Player Classic, for playing DVDs?

As for freeware burning, I heard CDBurnerXP is pretty darn good.

I also use Media Player Classic for DVD movies. I like it because it has more control for both AC3 and DTS.

WMP always had aliasing problems in DVD menus. I have no problems like that in MPC.

There's a few ones that come with PCs with dvd drives.

Intervideo WinDVD is the one i've been using over the years. It's been on all the computers i've had, so it's free by my definition. If not, i expect you can obtain it somehow ...

I have a feeling cyberlink make one too, and i'm 40% sure it's what my mum's acer uses, but she might have a specific acer program for it, i can't remember.
