PS3 (private) Voice chat is only available at the XMB if you want to talk to someone in-game you better hope its in a party/lobby. Me and my friend love playing Killzone 2 online but unless we are in the same team (which is hard to get most of the time) you wont be able to talk to 'Friends'.

First of all, I have around 10 friends who I know personally and hang around with socially and we all have Xbox 360's.

Its completely relevant, the PS3 needs this.

I also really like the party chat feature for certain games. Ncaa football 09 on the online dynasty is great for party chat. You really need it to get everything organized properly. The ps3 would really benefit from this feature.

But, at the same time The party chat really ruins games. Just like you say with killzone, you can't talk to your friend unless he is on the same team as you. Well, that's the whole point of an online shooter. If you are not on his team, and you are talking to him, then you are cheating. It really ruined COD on the xbox. If you try and play it now, everyone is in party chats, and you can't talk to them. Teamwork is straight out the door. I hate party chat for shooters, it should be able to let the games disable party chat while playing them.

I really kind of hope the ps3 never does allow party chat. Or at least allow the game developers to be able to disable this feature while you are in game. If not, socom, COD, killzone etc. will be ruined as far as teamwork is concerned. Now when you go into a game, everyone on your team will talk to you and use teamwork. If party chat is added, then maybe only 1 or 2 of the people there will still be in the games chat, and not the party chat.

I really like the party chat feature on games where it will not effect the games flow, or gameplay. Some games though, are really hurt by this added feature. Your quote at the top is the exact reason that it ruins games. In shooters you should be forced to only talk to the players on your team. I know that choices in gaming are great and all, but it shouldn't take away from the design of the games. Party chat really does that in tactical shooters, and shouldn't be an option while playing them.

The party text chat is the same thing. When you leave the lobby and enter the game, all party features should be blocked until the game, or round is over.

Just like you, I too have been in battles with nitrate about the ps3 vs 360 debate. You can't win, he will never surrender to anything you have to say. Save your breath. He does though have very well written and thought out arguments, and I did enjoy trying to open his mind a little to the 360. Just like you say they both have pros and cons. The ps3 is very much more a multi media machine then the 360, but the 360 is more of an online gaming community then the ps3. I love them both and wouldn't want to lose either, although I have had to give up the 360 4 times to the red rings.

Anyway, long live the 360 party chat, but keep it off the ps3. That way I can keep my shooters on the ps3, and use the xbox for the sports games. For me it works out perfect, just like it is.

Oh, and by the way digital nitrate. I don't know if you remember us discussing the ps3's slow download times. I recently upgraded to a 25 mb connection, and it has cured my problems with slow downloads. I can now get about 12 mb a second speeds. Not near the 360 times but much better the the 1mb I was getting. It looks like normal roadrunner just doesn't work well with the ps3. All in all though, that was really my only major complaint with the ps3, so now I am happy and have no real major complaints.

Even I could not help but be impressed by Sony's E3 presentations, and my faith is now almost completely restored!

My only complaint is that this year should of happened last year!

When i'm on the 360 I will want to be playing a game not sitting at the dashboard just to communicate with them, so it does not matter if they are playing a different game, I can chat to them about a game they are playing or one that im playing or negotiate which game we can play together, all using the Xbox 360's private chat or Party Chat (up to 8 people in a private room).

I agree with this 100%. This is a feature that is completely relevant, and apart from the user's demand of in-game XMB access (which we got already) I think this is the second most demanded feature that the PS3 has failed to deliver and hope to see in the near-future.

While it may not be the case for you, Digital, I've had to leave games and open up chats because my real life friends log on and we're deciding which game to play and quite honestly, though I really do believe that the text chat feature is a good, necessary step towards better communication with your friends on PSN it is horribly implemented; 32 chars long messages with endless unaccurate filters that censor words like Jesus or toy. =/

That said, the PS3 has come a long way since it came out in 2006 and I hope they keep it up (They certainly are keeping things interesting for 2009 with the games coming up).

I wasnt arguing to try and win because i know my side of this argument would win, more people will rather have the same private or party chat functionality like the 360 than not have it.

I was insulted when he called my post misleading, as it was not misleading. It was 100% true.

I have read alot of his posts and yes Digital Nitrate knows his stuff about the PS3 and he is good at writing / debating but it does not make him correct. Especially in his english when you can see twists in it to make the PS3 sound better than it actually is.

I didnt post to start an argument i just wanted to get my point accross that the PS3 would benefit from better communication system, it would encourage more gamers to buy headsets as most online games i play its usually only up to half the population that has headsets.

And the biggest reason i like the part chat is because of the immaturity you sometimes encounter with 12year olds playing games like battlefield bad company or call of duty and screaming down a mic, so on the 360 its great to have a private party of friends and it also allows for better gaming & being tactical and sometimes alot of fun.

The PS3 has came along way! and even though its online and most of its features have been updated be more like Xbox Live, the changes have made me come to like the PS3 more and more, and the online is free which is a big bonus. I just feel the last thing it needs to top it off is the private / party chat feature. (maybe a friend invite to a game like the 360 too).

I thought this would have been a great feature to announce at an E3 conference, i'm 100% sure you would have heard people screaming in the background in support!

I hate when someone sends me a typed message over PSN, it puts me off my game cos i want to know whats been sent, incase someone wants to play a game and if i finish the game im playing it means i'll miss the chance.

To be honest I have never even used the chat feature simply because if it doesnt work in game its pretty much useless to me. Im very rarely 'sat' on the XMB and even when using things like Home most stuff can't be used (including in game music).

As for the PS3 as a whole I think the outlook on games and features has improved dramatically but on the hardware side of things its become much worse. The intial hi praise of its reliability as started to give way to loads of blu ray drive failures and YLOD's. It might not be on the scale of 360's issues but at the end of the day you buy something more expensive for a reason.

Its sad to see so many failing not only on this forum but everywhere else and given Sony's 10 years outlook and them wanting you to use it for 'everything' its pretty laughable.

Robin.

My 40gb model and my mates launch model both broke on the same week (2 weeks ago), he said i jinxed him.

Both were same fault - failure of the blu ray drive, did not read any discs at all.

Same here, Blu Ray drive failure on a 60GB. Only had 6 months real useage and I dont even own 1 BR movie!

I couldnt believe it, and i think it will happen to alot, i'm starting to think PS3's blu ray drives will be dropping dead all over the place, you get what you pay for i guess and the PS3 is the cheapest Blu Ray player on the market i suppose.

I love my PS3 but its so ironic seeing all the fanboys who slated the 360's RROD keeping quiet. To be honest I used to slag the 360 off for it too (not in a fanboy fashion) but i cant complain, only had RROD once.

I use the party feature a LOT on my 360, so I can chat to my friends inbetween games and then we can decide on what to play if we all of sudden decide to play a game together. For me it's something that Sony should have implemented anyway, it seems very weird not having it on a console as advanced as the PS3.

But then having said that, most of my PS3 friends don't even have headsets anyway so it would be useless for me. Nobody chats properly in PS3 games, if you play the equivalent game on the 360 people are much more vocal. Although this is usually a bad thing
