Easiest way to capture backfires???

I'm sat there watching the replay trying to hit select at the right moment so that it pauses on the backfire. I'm basically guessing when I think the downshift is. Surely there's an easier way to do this. Can anybody help please?

Try quicker reflexes. :)

Watch the replay in display mode and note the time when it happens then go back and be prepared. If your reaction time is slow then aim for a second or two early.

That's the best I can tell you. Outside of that it is just luck and quick reflexes.
 
what causes backfiring anyways? i've watched several real gt races and never seen it, but in the game at least one person backfires every 20 seconds. is that realistic at all? it drives me nuts since i've never seen it for real before.
 
I just do a bunch in a row and hope I catch one.
When I was watching JGTC on TV the cars backfired about as much as they do in the game, if not more.

It's the shift into a lower gear during deceleration that makes the cars backfire. Is it realistic? Yes, although it does seem to do it on cars you wouldn't expect it to as well. Real Le Mans race cars do it all the time during the race, as do the JGTC cars.
 
When you downshift, the extra raw fuel dumps into the exhaust where it contacts the extremely hot pipes and a fire occurs. Mild to highly tuned cars are more likely to spit out fire. It's technically not a "backfire" but yeah ...

Even my lightly tuned 198bhp Mazda MX-5 does it. :lol:
 
Backfire (Before combustion stroke) = Fire coming out of intake manifold, caused by vavle overlap in cars with aggresive cams or forced induction.

Afterfire (After combustion stroke) = Fire coming out of muffler, in race cars without catalytic converters, excess fuel is being detonated due to heat.
 
My car does it so much it even does it in light traffic situations, no flames but you can definitely hear the loud "POP!!"... :crazy:
 
But in the game, sometimes, it doesn't seem very loud.

After watching the Audi R8s at TMS in 2001 and sitting dead near the track pretty much at the wall, when they came to the corner and braked, the backfire was extremely loud. Ok, not extremely but much much louder than in GT4.
 
I wish GT4 had the popping sound many race cars and tuned street cars make when they downshift. Yea, the R8 pops like crazy when it is downshifting.
