The Elfin ME 5 was the first aluminium monocoque sports car to be built and was commissioned by Niel Allen for his attack on the Australian Sports Car Championship. The model designation ME 5 came from it's designer/builder Garrie Cooper,
'M' for monocoque, 'E' for Elfin and the '5' for the size of the engine. It is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 and drives through a Hewland transaxle. Built to period Group A sports car regulations, it was only raced by Allen on three occasions before he moved on to the burgeoning Formula 5000 class.
To the best of my knowledge, the car is currently owned by the German designer of the Porsche Boxster, Harm Lagaay and sees sunlight in historic competition on rare occasions.
