Elise S1 Vs S2

If you were to buy one, which one would you choose and why?

This one would completely depend on my budget. If I had £30k lying spare, I'd get a brand new one, preferably a CR since it's the one most reviews seem to suggest is the best (lightest and purest). With a third that budget, a nice S1. If I needed one to drive every day, an S2 Elise 'S', the base-model Toyota-engined one, would be my choice.

In terms of looks, I do prefer the S1 though, and my ideal Elise is the 49:

Classic colour scheme, but based on the purest Elise of all, the early S1s.

Well, the S2 ''S'' is the most un-original you could say. Its like a tamed version built to accomodate show off-fat-bad drivers. It has the side cut-off chassis to ease ''ingress'', narrow front tires to be understeery and the S2 looks which are too extreme and provocative (look at me!). With the toyota engine, even though its matched to a better gearbox than the one K-series S1s had, it is 60 kgs heavier than the K reaching a total of over 770 kgs. That's a bit too much considering the original s1 project was aiming for a <600 kg total weight, even though it missed its mark.

I used to like the S2 but the more i find out about it the more i hate what it stands for.

So essentially this thread is just an opportunity for someone to mention the S2, at which point you spew all your entirely-subjective reasons as to why it's rubbish?...

You got the wrong idea. I just want to hear what the average car enthusiast thinks on the matter. I expressed my opinion just to keep things going.

Because even your objective points (more weight) are used to back up subjective criteria, like "That's a bit too much"... Too much what? It's hardly lard-arsed as it is, and you said yourself that the S1 missed out on its original weight criteria. The S1 came in at 720kg - a skinny person lighter than the S2, which is apparently "a bit too much".

Apart from anything, I don't see what's "un-original" about the S2 'S'. It was the lightest and least-well equipped of the S2s. That surely makes it the closest in spirit to the original S1, just like the S2 facelift CR is.
