So I got cheap speakers, I'll admit it. I got the Altec Lansing VS2121 2.1 speakers. I just got a cell phone. Whenever my speakers are plugged in at all, whenever my phone sends or recieves any data at all, my speakers make chirping noises. Loud noises, like the volume is almost maxed out. I know it's normal for some EM distrubance, but this is rediculus. The only way I can prevent this is keep the phone out of my room or unplug the speakers. Neither of which is desirable. I called tech support and they said that was all I could do and it was normal. It's way too damn loud. It wakes people up in the middle of the night. Are these speakers pure junk? Is there any way to prevent this, like with 2" think lead plates around the woofer or something?

Your cell phone's GSM signal is the blame. It clicks, cracks or pops through your speakers at the 217hz frequency range. It gets sent to your speakers via the unshielded speaker wire. So, shield them. You can use mylar foil, and heavy duty aluminum foil if you want. But, the best bet is to go buy some shielded speaker wire. You also should turn down the audio signal at that frequency by using a equalizer and you should turn down the bass control. But, this will alter the sound of your music. There is no way else around this, besides leaving the room to make or recieve a phone call.

Test it out. Place your phone closer to the speaker wire, and see if the noise gets louder or more clear. If there are no wires, then something else that isn't properly shielded is the culprit. But, like I said, 9 out 10 times, it's the unshielded speaker wire. It happens in the car with the car radio too, I bet.

Happens to us in the car as well.... I highly doubt it's through the speaker wires though.. The signal from the amp to the speakers is far too high to be bothered by the weak signal from a cellphone.. I'd say it's somewhere in the signal path before the amplifier.. That would explain why you can actually hear it...

If the cellphone signal were strong enough to supply the power needed to move the speakers membrane, you should be able to hear this even with your speakers turned off....

I do hear the noises with the speakers off. I can only not hear the signal when I leave the speakers unplugged.

What can disturb a wireless mouse?? I have it less than a foot from the reciever yet sometimes it doesn't work right. :odd:

I get this same problem with my headphones (good ones) every time I go through the security scanner thing at my school's library.

My friend got this problem a year ago when he installed a wifi card to his desktop. The thing started making the speakers go kaput the moment it was plugged in.

I would love to know if you can hear it with the speakers unplugged from their power source... Could you test this ?...

I already said. I don't get the noises when the speakers are unplugged from the power strip.

Ohhh... Sorry.. I missed that part - /* Reminds one self NOT to reply to anything after a CL Finale */

In that case - Can you agree with what I posted earlier ?....

Speakers being disrupted by cell phones is a common problem. It happens on every item in my house with a speaker. Gets a bit annoying.

Emad: If you have a wirless mouse that uses infrared, anything opaque between the mouse and the receiver can disturb it's signal. Radio mouses are less prone to interference than infrared, but they can be disturbed by anything using the same frequency as your mouse. Anything from wireless routers, to other wireless mouses can send your mouse nuts.

Wow. The sound is literally UNBEARABLE. It hurts my ears. That can't be good. I definately have to get new speakers. :grumpy:👎

I have sent a letter of my dissatisfaction to Altec Lansing.
I have the VS-2121 speakers and I recently got a cell phone. Whenever
I have the speakers plugged in, even if they are off, I get SEVERE
noise in the speakers when I send or receive a call near the speaker
system. It comes through the speakers as a crackling and a beeping.
The noise can be unbearably loud at times, and wakes people, including
people in other rooms, up at night. I called technical support, and
they told me to unplug the speakers when not in use, which is a severe
inconvinience. I feel that I shouldn't have to go through plugging in
the system whenever I want to listen to music on my computer.

I get interference on other speaker systems in the house with my cell
phone, but none to this magnitude. I am severely dissatisfied with
this product and would like a refund, or a solution to this problem. I
have always had wonderful luck with Altec Lansing, and would like to
continue doing business with you, but this problem cannot be
overlooked.

Um... in Altec Lansing's defense they are Altec Lansing. :cough: Standards :cough: ;) j/k

I get the disturbances in my creative 5.1 speakers too, but they don't hurt my ears. When i have the phone atleast 30cm away from each one i don't get interference. Same goes with my keyboard (ie electric piano), hifi, and in my mum's freelander. But if i put the phone directly on the cover of the speaker on my keyboard, i don't get any disturbance. I cn't figure ut why though ...
