Do you own one? How long have you had it? Have any problems? What are your basic opinions on it.

It seems like a good deal, and knowing now that they are backed by Gateway support it really seems like a perfect computer for someone that can't quite afford the best computer on the market.

Just wanted to know if their is anything negative I should about them.

I don't know about the prices of E Machines, but I do know they are built as cheaply as possible. A car comparison is in order.

Would you buy the cheapest car possible, even if that's all you could afford? Probably not - you'd want to get something a little more reliable.

Also, you can get a Dell refurb pretty dang cheap from the Dell Outlet. Not as cheap an an E Machine, I'm sure, but much better quality. We've bought about 15 computers through the Dell outlet and they don't appear to be any different from the ones we used to buy new. They're just not "cutting edge", which no one really needs anyway.

Emachines used to suck horse stuff. That was, of course, before Gateway bought them out. Now their PCs are actually more reliable than more people think, I'd say 'cause they used to be crap. Sort of like Hyiunas(sp). Previously crap, now quite the value car.

👍 To Emachines for Value computer, however, you should build your own. :)

Well my friend has one, and I go to his house a lot so I know about his Emachine, he first upgraded the video card, and i believe some extra RAM. He had it for a little over 2 years and about a year after he got it, it started to slow down a lot, he says it still runs fine, but with all these high end games coming out, he might start building his own. I say build your own 👍

That's interesting. I often wonder about computers' tendancies to "slow down", as the users put it.

Do computers actually slow down? I don't see how they could. Nothing is really changing. It's just thin pieces of metal with electricity flowing through it. I suppose resistance could build up after extended use and the computer could actually get slower. But I believe it is simply user perception. They are comparing this two year old computer to what they are seeing new at their friends' houses.

Also, it could just need to be reinstalled. After prolonged use, a hard drive can become horribly fragmented. Software can have horrible effects on Windows. The Registery can become so cluttered that Windows churns for minutes at a time looking for one tiny piece of information.

Format! Reinstall! You'll think you've installed a supercharger and some NOZ into that bad boy.

Oh they do work, but don't expect them to be good at anything. If all you want is low quality browsing and emailing, have at it.

Well this computer is for my girlfriend who is trying to make it on her own. She doesn't have the time nor the know how to build one of her own. On top of that, all she needs is a computer that can get online, web browse for school, have Mircosoft Word, Exel, and Powerpoint. This isn't going to be a gaming computer, or a design computer. Just a school computer.

I think its a good buy for her.
