Embracing Dorkdom, Nerdom, and Geekdom: Why it's Cool to be Different

I have to say that I have seen all the Harry Potter movies including the recent release at the cinema. I really enjoyed watching them although the first two films are a bit hard to watch now that I've seen the more recent darker films.

I'm not really into action/fantasy films at all but Harry Potter and LOTR are the two that have really got my attention.

LOTR and Harry Potter are completely different stories and shouldn't be compared. They've been written in completely different eras for completely different audiences. It makes so sense to argue which is better because it just comes down to personal taste. I've read both series, seen all the movies, and love them all.

I think the reason I love Harry Potter so much is that when I first started reading the series I was in the target age group. I've grown up alot since then, but if you've read all the books you'd know that the characters in the books grow up too, so as I've matured so has the story. In the last few books the characters face trials that little kids can't relate to at all.

I think people boycott Harry Potter more because its so commercial rather than because they actually believe they don't like it. Come on, there's got to be a reason they've become so popular.

Well, I bought 3, 4, and 5 this evening (they were out of 6) and I got what I had expected at the counter. A dramatic re-enactment:

YSSMAN: Hello
LADY: Did you find everything you were look for?

YSSMAN nods

LADY: Catching up on Harry Potter?
YSSMAN: Yeah, I felt really guilty about not reading them. Its been like seven years since I finised the second one.
LADY: Well, I haven't read any of them. Are they good?
YSSMAN: I liked the first two, I liked the movies too.
LADY: Aren't they kinda scary for the kids though?
YSSMAN: My youngest brother might not like them...
LADY: Thats too bad. Are you coming to the magic festival on Friday night?

LADY continues to ring up books

YSSMAN: Well, I would, but I'll probably be a work...
LADY: Thats too bad, it will be a lot of fun...

LADY gets to only redeeming piece of literature, Top Gear Ferrari Special... has issues with the barcode

LADY: Don't forget your (free) Harry Potter pin!
YSSMAN: Thanks!

YSSMAN pays, and leaves

For a Barnes and Noble cashier, she was pretty hot. Had an accent too. Sounded Eastern European...

===

On that note, I'm probably going to work on another installment here in a bit.

LADY: Thats too bad. Are you coming to the magic festival on Friday night?

Dude, she was asking you out. I can't believe you said no. Well, actually that might have been the perfect response - but you still have to go and see if she's there.

Here's how it should have played out.

Her: "I want you to go to the festival on Friday"
You: "Are you going to be there?"
Her: "Of course."
You: "Well then maybe I should. In fact, if you give me your number we can go together"

Friday Night

Her: "Ok, here it is. They're holding it in the basement of this abandoned building."
You: "Interesting"
Her: "Hey guys, I brought YSSMAN. I hope you guys don't mind"
You: *Looks around at the dead chickens, candles, goblets of blood, and the pentacles on drawn on the ground and ceiling... looks at the cashier chick one more time... and takes a seat.* :)

I don't mind commercialized stuff at all. But I don't really get into children's books/movies unless there's something in it for the grownups.

The main reason why a good amount of people labeled "Geeks" or "Dorks" are single. Never say no when a girl is asking you to go somewhere, especially if shes going too. 👍 Make her feel, wanted. :)

Hahaha, you are indeed a dork Brad. Its quite apparent actually, espcially after the nerdgasm of Transformers.

But yeah, the guys are right, she was likely asking if you were gonna be there cause she has some interest :D It happens, and dorks typically over look it :P

On the Harry Potter issue... they are very well written and quite accessable. The later installments continue to get darker and darker (which is expected when a story starts with a orphaned child whose parents were murdered), to the degree that the last few books have been more for at least late teen than the initial target audience of 13 range for first few books.

And what kind of Magic festival? MTG, or tricks and presentation?

But welcome to the club. I can post my dork/nerd bits.

Learning to use DOS at the age of 4
Being able to do long division before I could read.
Playing Magic: The Gathering
Playing Pokemon before it got huge in the states
Playing Warhammar 40k
Logged god only knows how many hours in computer RPGs
Have a large collection of Asimov, Clarke, and other Sci Fi authors.
I have a "Q is for Quantum" reference encyclopedia.

I understand most every reference in Penny Arcade and VGCats.
I know how to build a computer, and program.

I'm sure there are more, but alas, lazy.

"_____ that... even if I wasn't a geek/dork I wouldn't want to go to a stupid magic festival."
XD
priceless

and,
I think Dave is right, geeks, AKA trekies, harry potter fans, starwars crazy(!) etc...
dorks: lets just say, aAl : the kid who dances to his own beat, wears his hair like an 80's rapist(sometimes)(lol) and doesnt care about what others say.
Hey Al, wanna come with us men to the dance this friday?
Al: Sure, I was gonna go anyways!
*arrival at dance*
Al dances around in some weird disco fashion.

Just to be clear, while the foreign and rather attractive lady at the bookstore appeared to be (somewhat) hitting on me, she appeared to be a bit older (say plus ten or so years), and furthermore, I think she has to ask everyone who bought Harry Potter stuff.

Although I could be wrong.

...I should ask Emily if she wants to go...

Oh wait, I often forget that she doesn't like to read, didn't know Die Hard was a real movie, who Bruce Springstein was, and furthermore forced me to watch Crossroads.

So maybe not then...

If any girl makes you watch Crossroads without knowing who Bruce Springstein and what Die Hard, she's not worth your time .

And just to be clear we are talking about the Britney Spears movie, right?

Thats the one...

All she does is watch chick movies and Friends (she has all ten seasons on DVD), and I do my best to keep my mouth shut over it. I'm doing my best to make her watch some good movies (Transformers went over quite well, so its a start!), listen to some good music, so on and so fourth. But, there is only so much you can do... She hasn't seen Star Wars, one one LOTR movie (much less reading the books), saw only part of Spider-Man (never even held a comic book), doesn't understand anything about videogames (she enjoys guitar hero though...), and otherwise doesn't care much for my kind of music (Killers, Automatic, MCR, Locksley, Klaxons, etc).

Its an uphill battle, but she is fun to hang around with. I rather enjoyed explaining Transformers to her...

Oh, and I've added another posting:

Embracing Dorkdom Pt.2: Cartoons Still ROCK!
In the ongoing series of discussions on the topic of being a dork, I next reach the section of Cartoons. As the eldest child of my family, and furthermore one that dates back to the middle 1980's, Cartoons have been a part of my life for quite a long time. From Transformers to Finding Nemo, from Dark Water (look it up!) to Billy and Mandy, I love Cartoons.

But its no surprise really. I grew up on the stuff. But even at the ripe old age of 20, I still watch more Cartoons than my younger brother, at the rather sprite age of six. I mean, what can I say, I like the stupidity of it all. Its a good way to relax, and get the stress of the day out. And while I am among those who take pity on the Spongebobs and Dave the Barbarian's of today, particularly when we fondly remember the classic Buggs Bunny and Daffy Duck Cartoons of old.

So, yeah. I guess my reasons are a bit varied than I thought. While on the one hand, I like the escape that cartoons give, but on the other its also the fact that I don't want to leave them behind. Sure, while I should be buy watching CNN and God knows what else, I spend my time watching Freakazoid. But then again, it isn't as though they don't make Cartoons for adults either. Quite frankly, TV really doesn't get good for me until the Cartoon Network Adult Swim commences every night at 10:30PM, a wonderful collection of adult-oriented toons to keep me happy.

And yet, I still catch flak for watching them. Too bad really, because I love them. I eagerly spend $30 on a collection of cartoon DVDs. I chomp at the bit for some of my former favorite series' to show up on DVDs too.

But maybe this isn't so bad. As of late, Cartoons are cool again, thanks in part to the growth of the Comic Books fad, and furthermore, thanks to Adult Swim.

Not the best rant, but what can I say? I loves my Cartoons, eight year olds be damned!

Not the best of my writings, but I hoped it would get the point across...

I'm confused, so you are saying that it shouldn't be a concern of anyone else with what you like but you don't like it when people are concerned with brands? Isn't that hypocritical?
No. You've completely misunderstood what I've said.

I'm saying I don't like it when people worry too much about the brands other people wear, and furthermore have something negative to say about it. I suppose I kind of assumed people would understand what I meant in relation to everything else I was saying. My apologies.

Sometimes a 7-minute cartoon puts everything in perspective, even the stuff made over 50 years ago. My dad used to watch Looney Tunes with us on Saturday mornings (do they still do show them?) and The Flintstones in the afternoons when we were kids. I'm not sure if it was because we shared a common interest when we were both kids, or because some of the jokes and gags couldn't be understood until later on in life.

I only wish I could stay up late enough to watch Adult Swim on a regular basis, but when you have an somewhat irregularly-sleeping six-month-old and a job that starts at 8am, you tend to get your rest when you can.

I don’t “get” Adult Swim at all – the only thing I watch is Futurama. It seems to me you can only truly appreciate some of those cartoons if you’re high while watching them.

It's true. I think you NEED to be high to even watch their live-action shows now.

The only cool show is The Venture Bros, which is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the best cartoon shows ever created.

I enjoy almost every show on there, its some of the anime stuff that I don't understand. I found Saul of the Mole Men to be f'ing hilarious, however Harvey Birdman and Metalocalypse are usually standard favorites for me.

Adult Swim gave us Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocalypse. You don't need to be high to see that both shows are classics. Drunk is more than adequate.

How can you force what you like onto her, but complain when she gets you to watch/listen to things you don't like?
