Volkswagen have been accused of using illegal software to alter emissions data, and has been ordered by the EPA to recall almost half a million cars sold in the US since 2008. Shares in VW have dropped 18% since Friday, with the company facing billions of dollars of fines and possible criminal prosecutions.

That really is terrible. I guess with the drive for more efficient cars they thought it would be easier to fiddle the readout than actually make the cars better. :ouch:

This could cost them dearly in the refits alone, some models they might not even be able to improve the emissions on leading to giving owners new engines or even new cars!

    Oh dear, oh dear.

Scenes if they and others have done this in Europe. Would be a massive operation to recall millions and millions of diesels.

Heh, finally they're getting some deserved punishment. Not the first time VW is doing something shady, but at least they aren't getting away with it this time. I really can't stand the VAG and this just further justifies my opinion.

All car manufacturers work on the edge of being shady. Now it's VAG who has been caught.

Seems like they're getting in to the F1 mentality already!

So electricity and manufacturing of Li-ion batteries produces 0 emissions?

Never liked VW cars, nothing special to me. The VW bus tho, that's purely iconic, having one of those cherry'd out would be rad.

I bet Winterkorn will be out by year's end. Lots of executive heads are going to be on the chopping block after this.

Maybe they can do something about their crappy thermostats that go out pre-maturely and cost $1k USD to replace.

Don't get me wrong VW tend to lower the price of their cars by giving them some cheap-ish features..... like lying :p

I do have some sympathy for VW, as I have been known to attempt to cover up my emissions as well.

Production and manufacturing emissions aren't factored in during an emissions test, which is what both this and the Tweet explicitly refer to. I know you were just trying to be clever, but a bit of a moot point. ;)

Of all the companies to pull such a sneaky tactic, VW was the last one I was expecting to pull something like this.
