My boss just called to tell me that i have to go in today...ON LABOR DAY!!!! AHHHHHHH.....and he has a day off....

any of you have things happen to you like that in the past?

That's why you don't answer the phone when the person who's calling is your boss.

A 'day in lieu' means that if you're forced to work a day you were supposed to have off, you can take a day off you were supposed to work in the future. For example, you normally only work Monday to Friday. You are asked to come in on Sunday, with a day in lieu. This means that in return for working Sunday, you can take day off during your regular working week.

Does that clarify it? What would you call this arrangement in the states?

We call it what you call it, but most would just say "ask for a day off."

i guess i must be working because im taking wedensday-monday off to go to new york ;) BTW, i gotta make a thread about this

Yeah - but there's days off, and there's days off. There's sickies, rostered days off (RDO's), annual leave, and so on.

A 'day-in-lieu' isn't like a regular day off, it's a change to your working schedule - moving your weekend around.

I have always referred to it as a 'comp. day.'
Compensation Day.

But there are many ways of referring to it I'm sure.
