Last night I was doing the Indy 500 endurance race. Strangest thing happened I was lap 157/200 and I noticed the graphics were all of a sudden dumbed down. You could tell the frame rate had dropped. Edges of the vehicles I was lapping were very edgy. The lap timer was also not displaying the proper digits. It looked like this 10.7"""2 where the quotes would represent vertical and horizontal scrambled lines. I turned off the HUD completely. I thought it might help but it was still the same in terms of gameplay--low framerate.
I was hoping to finish the race without the PS3 completely exploding, which fortunately I was able too. In the midst of this I was receiving and sending PSN messages where I could notice the highlighted box where you type the message was blinking sporadically and not consistently. After the race when the main menu that displays the different series races (Amateur, Pro, Expert etc.) comes flying in when you enter A-Spec, I noticed the bars that came in were rather infrequent in their timing. Frame rate was still dumbed down even though the race was over. Even on the main menu the white lines that move across in the background were inconsistent going across. I quickly saved and exited the game. The PS3 returned to normal without me having to completely turn off the PS3. Thank the
GT Gods. But this needs to be reiterated to PD ASAP, because there definitely is a need to implement a save feature in the endurance races/series races. This was way too close for comfort. I'm not going to be attempting any more endurance races until a save feature is implemented. Especially all this talk of people blowing up the consoles attempting 4+ hour races. I turned off the PS3 shortly after this race. So I don't know if any damage has been caused to it yet.
Thought I would share with others who may be attempting a long endurance and may be reconsidering. I did the first row of races except for the 4 hour Roadster one so far, with the first 2 endurance races I attempted with no problems. The Indy 500 which took a little more than 2 hours bugged me out.
My Console is:
PS3 80 GB fat model, not backwards compatible (I think
