Endurance races sucked my PS3's resources ?

Last night I was doing the Indy 500 endurance race. Strangest thing happened I was lap 157/200 and I noticed the graphics were all of a sudden dumbed down. You could tell the frame rate had dropped. Edges of the vehicles I was lapping were very edgy. The lap timer was also not displaying the proper digits. It looked like this 10.7"""2 where the quotes would represent vertical and horizontal scrambled lines. I turned off the HUD completely. I thought it might help but it was still the same in terms of gameplay--low framerate.

I was hoping to finish the race without the PS3 completely exploding, which fortunately I was able too. In the midst of this I was receiving and sending PSN messages where I could notice the highlighted box where you type the message was blinking sporadically and not consistently. After the race when the main menu that displays the different series races (Amateur, Pro, Expert etc.) comes flying in when you enter A-Spec, I noticed the bars that came in were rather infrequent in their timing. Frame rate was still dumbed down even though the race was over. Even on the main menu the white lines that move across in the background were inconsistent going across. I quickly saved and exited the game. The PS3 returned to normal without me having to completely turn off the PS3. Thank the :bowdown:GT Gods. But this needs to be reiterated to PD ASAP, because there definitely is a need to implement a save feature in the endurance races/series races. This was way too close for comfort. I'm not going to be attempting any more endurance races until a save feature is implemented. Especially all this talk of people blowing up the consoles attempting 4+ hour races. I turned off the PS3 shortly after this race. So I don't know if any damage has been caused to it yet.

Thought I would share with others who may be attempting a long endurance and may be reconsidering. I did the first row of races except for the 4 hour Roadster one so far, with the first 2 endurance races I attempted with no problems. The Indy 500 which took a little more than 2 hours bugged me out.

My Console is:
PS3 80 GB fat model, not backwards compatible (I think:odd:)

Odd I ran the indy 500 last night as well. New slim 160gb ps3 had no frame rate issues or slowdowns.

I was not multi-tasking at the time however so that could have been part of the difference.

How long was it on prior to the race?

Sounds like the video card was just getting too hot.

I've done every enduro race i've unlocked so far. Including the tsukuba 4 hour race and had no problems. I've got the Suzuka 1000km and the Nurburg 4 hours to do now.

I suspect this may have more to do with problems than anything else. That, or your system was starting to hit the high end of its operating temperatures.

Like all computing hardware, it's really important to keep your system cool, and make sure it has plenty of airflow. It's also better to not immediately turn off your system after stressing it, but rather to let it idle for a while so the fans can continue to blow across the various heat-sinks and bring the temperature down before shutting it off. I've got a 80g fatty (from the Metal Gear Solid bundle), and I have it on top of a mesh-like shelf with 10 inches or so between it and the wall, and the same with anything on either side. I've had the sucker going hard-core over long weekends, for example, and it's never even gotten warm to the touch.

I wasn't sending messages though until I had left about 23 laps. I had a pending trade with someone, and I remember letting him know how many laps I had left last night. So the multi-tasking part wasn't started until a little after the frame rate had already been dumbed down. I just think the my PS3's computing power was definitely pushed to its limits last night and I'm really hoping they add the mid-save feature soon.

Yeah I turned it off after quiting the game, doing a trade, logging back in to get my car as well. So I turned off the PS3 shortly after the race, like 15 minutes or so. I think it was just over heating for sure.

If that's the case, then it is most likely a heat issue. Or, of course, the possibility that hardware is about to fail somewhere (which, from what it seems, is most often caused by heat issues in the first place).

Great, I'm gonna be taking it easy for awhile now I guess

It's a shame one has to pick finishing a race over frying their ps3 just because pd went for utmost realism and decided to not implement enduro saves. Not everyone has time to plop in front of the tv for 4+ hours. I have done the lower enduros that are around 2 hours and even that gets unbearable.

I ran my 80gb fat (motorstorm bundle) for 36 hours the last two days with no problems. I'm starting to get worried though. It seems like every week someone is reporting an issue. I think I'm going to go easy on the system until the save feature is released. (If there is one I'm not sure if one was announced or if it's just speculation)

Longer enduros are fun if you have a friend to do it with you. I did the Tsukuba race with a friend and it was his first time playing GT5 so it came down to the wire only winning by 20sec after 4 hours.

Bob been goin at 9hr endurance 6 times in a row now (with an hour or so in between when i was asleep or not there to start again. Its a release model 60gb and is cool to the touch.

Window open most of the time and if not, desk fan placed to help cool.

If my PS3 starts to seem like its struggling i pause the game and point a desk fan at it. It soon gets back to normal. Every so often mine makes a high pitch squeek that makes me jump every time (like the split counter sound but much louder and it happens at any time). Anyone got any ideas what that could be?

It's your ps3 crying.

I have noticed the same thing too, but my ps3 have been on since the gt came out. So no problems, expect the lagging and the systems some times freezes. I hope the 40gb crappy one blows up so i can get a new model. :)

No need for the Sony S&M Nixo! Just retire the old girl and bring home the new trophy wife.... Just remember her for all the good times you had together =)

Its been sitting and doing nothing for very long, last played gtaiv with it.. so i have no feelings towards it. I might as well throw it out of the balcony, and go get the new girl tomorrow. Thanks for the tip mate.
