I know, I want to drive it really bad. But we havnt had it at 2,000 rpm as long as the manual wanted us to. I would be tempted to drive it to check if the radiator was sufficent if we already did this procedure. But my dad is out of town so I will have to wait until friday for this all to take place.
Whoa wait a minute if the manual is asking you to rev 2,000rpm that means the cam has NOT been broken in yet. I was under the impression that it was. You should not have been letting the engine idle at all until the cam got broke in.

Ok thats not so bad but your right you need to get that cam broke in. After that the instructions should state that you need to drain your oil because all of the cam lube will be everywhere and its a little gritty. Get some fans to put in front of the car too while you break it in. Anything it takes to keep it cool for the 15-20 minute break in process. Just make sure to change the oil after you break in the cam. I have had several new engines an broke in quite a few more. Between friends and family I have seen at leats 10-15 new engines.

Have you got a shroud on your fan, or is it just spinning open in the engine bay?

For good efficiency you really need a shroud. I'm not sure of the numbers, but when the comparison is done a fan without shroud is pretty much useless compared to a shrouded fan.

Without the shroud you suck a lot of air in from beside the fan and in front of it, without drawing that much through the radiator. The shroud ensures that the air the fan is pumping is being drawn through the radiator.

Yes! the el camino is alive in cool. The engine temp stays around 175-185 the whole time. We ended up going the route of the flex fan. That thing pulls some air let me tell you! I took some more pics of the engine today.. ill post some later tonite, im going to drive it!

Good to hear it's running sweet. 👍 :)

So, you got a new fan? The cluch was OK?

Or have you gone for an electric fan removing the need for a fanbelt/clutch?

:)

Thanks Slicks, its actually one of my favorite things on it. My dad had a 72 chevelle when he was younger and he had a set of mickey thompsons like that, I loved them so i found myself a pair of them. Like father like son right?

Matt, that Car/Truck is looker cooler as time goes on. 👍 👍

Lucky for me, I was adopted. My dad once tried to fill his oil thru the dipstick..:nervous:

Glad to hear your new fan fixed the problem. 👍
Hows the new engine feel? You must have taken it for a ride by now.
Dont ever get rid of those valve covers. I had a pair on my 67 Chevy truck and I regret getting rid of them. I painted mine black then had the fin part bare aluminum just like you did.

I like it alot actually. Im getting used to it. The old engine had a cam in it so its sad to hear the lopey idle go away :(. Its great though, definatly the talk around school.. everyone is jealous. Im pretty pleased with the way it runs. It definatly wants to pick up and go, I just want to put a few hundred miles on the engine before i open it up. I do want to look for someone who has installed an HEI ignition, I think other than the seats and paint thats the last thing this car needs.
