What's your opinion on engine swaps?

  • Stick with the original engine (or a variant of it).

There's actually a filter to prevent double posting, but it doesn't work if it's the result of a connection error. :p
 
Yeah I guess a powerful, lightweight, versatile, reliable, and well supported engine is just too easy.

Yes it is, because most people who put LSxx in their car are looking for power and torque.
Dont get me started on the drifters that use it just so they can drift competitively.
It's an easy way out in terms of power, money and torque.
Im sure you can get a LSxx cheaper than building an SR of the same price.
I could be wrong about that though.

It's pretty hard to argue against an LS swap except in terms of aesthetics... and yet, it's hard to find anyone who doesn't find the aural signature of an uncorked V8 pleasing.

Sad for import lovers, but the US drift scene is slowly but steadily heading towards LS swaps. They're light, powerful, torquey and reliable... especially at the high-stress low-speed workouts they get in drifting.

Time attack is still the domain of 4G63Ts, though...

LSx's aren't the only engines known for those standards either though, some Mopars and Fords aren't anything to laugh about in that sense.

The 460 Cobra Jet and the 351 Windsor are the two Ford engines that I respect a lot.

429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet =P. A 460 was just 429 with a longer stroke. Don't forget there was also a 428 CJ and SCJ.

351W's and 302s have advantages in weight, the blocks themselves are at least 50-100lbs lighter than an average Chevy 350.

Because I evaluate engineering solutions by their technical merit. If the engine does what I want it to do then it's a good solution. If it can do this reliably and with a large amount of support behind it, then it's a great solution.

Those who engineer based on some silly predispositions are often left in the dust by those who do not.

I'd say anything really. Crazy or not, I think it's fine, though I'm sure some people would consider some swaps sacrilege. I guess you could say I fall into the swaps from the same manufacture with my current project car. (Crown with a 2JZ-GTE) But as of my vote, anything works.

And that might be fine for your uses. I'm not saying that an SR20DET or any Japanese iron block isn't a plenty good setup to have depending on the use.

But to say you're "against" an engineering solution as a whole, you need a valid reason. This goes especially when the solution you're against gives many people the power, torque, simplicity, and reliability they desire.
 
I L-O-V-E engine swaps, especially the really wacky ones like when people put Boss 302 engines in fairlanes, and I might be doing one soon, because I'm really wanting to swap the VG30DE out of my 300ZX, with a VG30DETT, which go for pretty decent prices, but I think I'll wait till next spring when the snow starts to melt. :sly:
 
An SR20DET is a nice, robust engine that can pump out 400-500 hp reliably on the street.

On track, not so much. Too hot. Too oil-thristy. Too difficult.

If you're swapping for swapping's sake, or for road use, it's a great engine. But you enter a race competition with the best engine that fits within your budget.

I love my car, and I've worked on the engine quite a bit, but if I had to enter a time attack competition, there's no way I'd enter with that car or that particular engine. It needs a ton of work... oil pump blueprinting, external resevoirs, baffled pan, forged internals... merely to become as reliable as a stock K20 or SR. At that point, simply buying a rat-trap old Sentra and modifying that becomes a more practical proposition.
