Enjoyment...?

Having received GT5 for Christmas I have been playing it pretty much none stop (when time permits,) I haven’t played anything else but am now coming to a point in the game where I have lost interest - within 1 month! There seems to be no longevity in the game, I have done all the bits I found fun, e.g. A Spec and the licence tests and some of the special events, but now the remaining challenges I have do not interest me.

A Spec was pretty fun but there are not many events, I now only have the FGT Championship to do (any tips on how to win this would be much appreciated as I can’t win for toffee) and the ridiculously long endurance events!! Why oh why is there no save feature when doing an endurance event? Do the creators really think that everyone who buys the game is a smelly student or school kid who has nothing else in their live other than PS3??? What about those of us who have limited time to play and ENJOY games that we have spent our hard earned cash on? I will never ever try to complete the 9 hour endurance, let alone the 24hr ones, there is just no point!!

I ENJOYED the challenge of gaining gold on all of the licence tests, it was an achievable aim and although it took me quite a while to fulfil, I got there in the end and was really pleased. I have completed some of the special events, but some of them just seem impossible, and unfortunately I do not have countless hours of time to spare in order to practice. Having read this forum quite a fair amount over the last couple of weeks, I have come to realise that I am at a huge disadvantage with this game because I do not have...and never will have... a steering wheel! What a joke! Why penalise the vast amount of the consumers, who will play the game with a DS3 to favour the minority of *pro’s*....? It just makes no sense..,I don’t care how other people play the game, but why should I be penalised because I am a casual gamer?!?!

I have pretty much been ‘playing’ B spec for the past week but am unable to gleen any satisfaction from it. I am only playing it as something to do, to gain credits and win some cars... Most of the time I use an extremely over powered car and then let my driver do his own thing whilst turning over and watching TV for 10 to 15 minutes...is this really what a computer game should be about? I have now got to a point in B Spec where I only have a few extreme events to complete, and all of the endurance events.

The extreme events that I have left to do are extremely hard, e.g. Nascar – why does my driver break so early (this applies for ALL races) and yet the other AI drivers are able to break later? It doesn’t matter how much I instruct him to speed up he still breaks far far too early! It is so frustrating! Anyway, what’s the point of B Spec? Why am I sitting around waiting for the computer to race against itself, whilst I have 4 buttons to press...or watch TV. It just makes no sense. Does anyone play B Spec for enjoyment? Or do you all, like me, just play it to win credits and cars? How is it supposed to be enjoyable?

Also recently I have traded a few cars (with thanks to the marketplace section of this forum) which seems like a good edition to the game, but which limit trades to 1 car per day per account? Again, it just makes no sense, what am I missing? It just encourages people to set up X amount more accounts...Again, I don’t care how others play the game but I only have...and will only ever have...1 psn account, so again I am in effect being penalised!

This game is good, the graphics are unbelievable, but it has no soul, it doesn’t make me want to play it...instead when I play it, I am playing to try and complete it rather than for enjoyment. I am frustrated and wondered if anyone else feels the same, or if there are other ways to enjoy the game? Otherwise I fear GT5 will be put back in its box for a long while and I shall never buy another Gran Turismo....

There is lots more I could write but look forward to hearing your opinions...

Thank you,

Have you tried online? It can be hard to find likeminded players but when you do you it's great fun. All I can say is that GT5 is the only game I have played since November last year so despite some obvious shortcomings it still a really enjoyable game in the long run.

I'm guessing your playing with a controller ?

Yes, I found a way to enjoy the game. Everything I do, I do to prepare cars for playing online with friends. All the offline driving is a chore but I do it to earn money for more cars. I prepare my own tuned cars I enjoy driving while racing my friends.

I am exactly the same, stopped playing when i got up to the fgt championships and havent even touched endurance races. Ive even startrd a new game doing all the races again and it has been somewhat enjoyable but i know im going to hit that wall again at fgt championships, only that keeps me starting up gt5 is trading to get the nice expensive cars and painting cars gold. They need to add heaps more content to save ppl from grinding non stop. And to keep players hooked on the game for another good year.

GT5 is enjoyable with a PS3 controller.

Yes i played with controller in between my DFGT breaking and G27 arrival. Very enjoyable to me.
But i find the one's that aren't enjoying GT are the one's without wheels ( usually).

And he states that only "pro's" have wheels, well i'm certainly not a 'pro' but i have the slight intelligence needed to realise that i like racing and driving in general and to get full enjoyment then obviously steering wheel + pedals is the way to go.

As he also points out in his advertisement for kleenex is that he isn't a smelly a student so surely if he liked racing games in the tiniest amount he would purchase a wheel instead of moaning about his controller, the logic of some people is seriously skewed.

There's only so much you can enjoy moving your thumbs 1 inch left and right vs wheel+pedal+shifter

I pretty much agree with everything you said. For me the biggest disappointment was that after playing GT4 and GT5 Prologue, this game had absolutely nothing new to offer. I've already driven around these tracks soooooooooo many times in previous games that I'm bored sick of them. PD really needs to learn how to create new tracks in less than the several years it seems to take them now. This game is so stale.

When I finished I had a 96% game completion percentage and I never once felt like I had been in a race. Just navigating through a moving obstacle course of mindless computer programs. And the fact that you can just put a set of soft racing tires on a car and win every race by a mile...it's the developer's job to make the game challenging, it's not my job to artificially handicap myself in order to make it difficult to win. And since there's no feeling of "racing", there's no point to it anyway.

Oh well, it's not like it's the only racing game on the market. Shift 2 Unleashed is coming out April 1 - the first Shift has the exact same Metacritic score as GT5, and the new game will have twice as many tracks, twice as many cars, a new physics engine devoted to providing the highest level of realism possible, and a new graphics engine.

I believe we're also getting F1 2011 from Codemasters this year. I enjoyed F1 2010 and if they make some improvements to the sequel, that should be quite enjoyable as well.

And let's not forget Dirt 3, which also promises realistic physics and from the videos I've seen so far, it looks pretty darned cool.

So it's unfortunate that GT5 was such a big disappointment, but it's certainly not like it's the only game in town.

If you read the post, the enjoyment isn't just because he has a controller as opposed to a wheel and pedals... I CAN'T use a wheel simply because of where my PS3 + TV are located but would if I could. Yes it would IMPROVE the enjoyment factor, but using a DS3 doesn't completely ruin the experience alone.

The problem is more in finding your own niche of the game. I get frustrated at the Vettel challenge (for obvious reasons), so much so that I prefer the B-Spec side (safer for my poor DS3). I can run those races when I'm doing coursework, and drive myself (online or in A-Spec) when I'm SUPPOSED to be doing coursework. As long as you find your own enjoyment and value within the game.

This is what frustrates me about people on this forum talking about the seasonal events as well. The amount of people complaining about the lack of regulations... GT5 is YOUR game, you don't have to do all the events if you don't want. Last time I checked, Kaz did not have a gun pointed at my back. Similarly, you do not have to race a 1,000hp beast against 100hp cars and then complain how easy the game has become...

As suggested before, try some of the online races (if you have the availability), you can find a lot better racing there usually. Otherwise, don't give up on the FGT championship. It isn't that bad once you've got more practice under your belt, you'll crack it soon enough! Also, some of the endurance races are not that bad. Grand Valley Speedway + Laguna Seca can be completed in under 2 hours each, or slightly longer when matched evenly with the opposition. The indy 500 is 2 hours as well, but a bit of a bore for myself.

Thank you for this fantastic post.

I did try to inject some humour in to my original post, so if that went over your head then I do apologise for your lack of brain power.

Anyway, I guess I need to explain to make it a bit clearer for you...I didn't say I don't enjoy the game because I am using a DS3...What I said was that I shouldn't be penalised for using one...I appreciate others have space, time, money etc to throw at a steering wheel set-up but I do not...

Exactly Wixy. After I hit LVL 32 I found nothing to do except seasonal races and they're just passing exorcises. Once you get in the lead (quite easy) you can pull away and still drive horribly. I wish the A.I. would pick up their cornering speeds and offer a challenge!💡

GT5 is my least favourite GT game & I understand what you mean when you say it has no soul. Cars are nice & shiny as per usual, the gameplay is total fantasy nonsense & mind numbingly boring as ever & the whole thing feels like some big experimental tech demo & not a full finished game.

All I do now is some online racing with good race buddies & the occassional drive, that's it.

👎👍

Beats GT5 on all aspects.
No grinding to level 40!
Superb sounds.
No B-Spec.
No Nascar.

Well thank you for the ridiculous insult to those of us that do enjoy the endurance races. Its ok for you not to like them, just as with endurance racing in the real world its not something that will apeal to everybody. But really, was there any need to label people that do enjoy them as a "smelly student or school kid"?

Endurance races are supposed to be just that. An endurance. If you can save the game every 15 mins that's hardly an endurance now is it?

I love the endurance races. I'm looking forward to doing the first 24 hour race next week. I'm neither smelly, a student or a school kid thank you very much.

The game is not penalizing you (or at least not directly). GT5 is a driving simulator and it so happens that driving a car is better with the steering wheel than the controller. If this was an arcade game, there wouldn't be this argument.

Controller/Wheel both have its advantage and disadvantages so saying you're penalized for using the controller is a mute statement imo. I agree for the most part though, the wheel is better to use for driving in the game, but that makes sense right?

What kind of satisfaction do you expect to get out of endurance events which have nothing to do with endurance? Make it special, invite friends along and take shifts racing while talking and drinking beer or whatever.

Also about the wheel thing. "I don't care how others play but why should I be penalized" well the rest of the community who want a realistic racing game don't want to be penalized because of people like you. If you can't win with the controller, turn aids on. That's what they're for.

Your feeling penalized for your own inability to complete the game. Bummer. If you need that satisfaction go by a modern shooter. Most can be completed in 3 or 4 sessions, then you can trade it in for the next title. A good driving game will require repetition and practice to improve your skill. Eventually you will be good enough to win those races that are stopping you now. This is the same for DS3 and wheel users. The soul of the game is provided by you, not the developers. IMO those that are ready to give up on the game already are just casual gamers, the real race fans are just getting started. BTW I'm at A spec lvl 34 and b spec 38 and did it all with a DS3.

Haha.

I could have guessed that everyone would completely miss my point.

I have not said I do not enjoy the game because I am using a DS3.
I have indeed indicated that I am not the best driver, nor do I have the time or inclination to practice...

But this is a game...?

I agree some of those on this forum want to use a wheel and gain a driving experience, but what about those casual gamers who aren't too interested in the driving experience but instead want some fun, light relief...enjoyment?

Anyway, I am sorry that I tried to start a sensible and honest discussion. I am not interested in fighting those of you who disagree or who blame me, or saying I am a cry baby, ra ra ra ra...

Simple case gt4 had over 400 events, gt5 has around 150 and a poorly implemented xp system.

PD is not done with this game yet. We have not seen even half of the content, there is much more coming.

Actually it is not a game. It's primary purpose is a driving simulator with a bit of racing thrown in to appease the "gamers" out there. If you are looking for just casual racing fun, then the NFS series caters to that type of user.

The racing aspect of the GT series is secondary to the driving. The offline portion of GT is great for car enthusiasts who want to drive cars that they would never get the chance to in real life or to drive their real life counterpart cars on tracks at very high speeds. How often does your average Joe or Susan get to take a F40 or an Enzo on the Nurburgring to run hot laps? This is where GT shines, with driving.

I drove GT1-GT4 using a controller and just got my first wheel(DFGT) last month for GT5. It was $120 and I clamped it to a coffee table and I sit on the couch and my god what a different experience. I should have bought one years ago. Think about how it would suck to sit in the drivers seat of a Ferrari and drive it using a DS3 and not feel the road through the wheel. It would still be cool but you might as well be in the passenger seat.

But this is a game...?

Umm yes it should, your playing a race game with 2 little sticks that go back and forth one inch. 2 little sticks that move inch are never going to give you the range of motion needed to accurately show off the physics.
Space is not needed for a wheel, i have a G27 and have to pack it away/set it up every time i want to use to it, i simply can't have it set up permanently. Money is a valid excuse, space is not.
DFGT at a desk with an office chair and the fun factor goes up 10x. G27 with proper cockpit and HDTV and fun factor is 50x that of a controller.

You might not need a wheel to enjoy it at first but once you have done all the races then driving around hotlapping can get rather tedious without a wheel .

Haha.

I agree some of those on this forum want to use a wheel and gain a driving experience, but what about those casual gamers who aren't too interested in the driving experience but instead want some fun, light relief...enjoyment?
.

Well there is Skid recovery force, forza, shift,TDU,midnight club,GTA,Mafia if you want some fun, light relief and enjoyment. No one said you had to buy GT5, you chose to buy GT5 under your own expectations and it's not the game you wanted, guess what buddy? THAT HAPPENS.

My favourite type of game besides driving is FPS,I bought COD, played , laughed, returned it and got Bad Company 2.. Not every game of the genre you like is going to be FOR YOU...

And yeah bashing people who like endurance races isn't a good way to get positive responses to your thread, adding a B-Spec driver to your endurance race is a sensible suggestion. Saving it 16 times and taking 4 weeks to do a 9 hour race is simply not endurance and as the endurance's are the last event's, not a single person has forced you to play these but yet you want to whinge about them. You really are ridiculous in your logic.

If you can save the game every 15 mins that's hardly an endurance now is it?

Yes it is, because nothing stops you from doing it all at once.

Anyway, to the original post. Play online. GT5 is probably a waste if you don't go online, I've never really had any other way to play it.

As for the controller vs wheel. A wheel is just natural for driving. PD realized this, and made the AI easy (I guess). About the only event where controller users are "penalized" is the Vettel challenge. Online, there are wheel users, but there are also controller users. It is completely possible to win with a controller though.

what about those casual gamers who aren't too interested in the driving experience but instead want some fun, light relief...enjoyment?

Easily found via controller. What is it that the controller is preventing you from doing? The one and only time I had to take out my wheel was to get the X1. It's optional everywhere else.

Perhaps if PD cared enough to get the physics right I'd agree. It's a sim, but it's definately aimed at mass gamers, the same ones playing NFS. No reason to bother with nonsense like credits otherwise.
