If you don't need help, why are you wasting time with a video game? If you're that good of a driver, why don't you have a ride with Prodrive or Joest or some factory team? Unless you have real racing experience, you probably couldn't drive your grandma's Camry at the limit.

Pretty much everyone thinks they are an above-average driver. Very few people are.

Cost and convenience directs me toward virtual racing but I have had profesional racing training and I have competed in several street and rally competition. I have been playing GPL with ease even before I ever stepped into a sports car so I disagree with you that you need real life experience in order to control a car with realistic physics on the screen. It just takes a little skill. :sly:

I would argue that no game has ever accurately portrayed what it's like to drive a car. Although you might have some training, it would be very bold to say that your skills at GPL would somehow qualify you to drive an F1 car with a modicum of proficiency. It takes a lifetime of experience to get to that point. Michael Schumacher didn't just skip work one day to become the most successful driver in F1 history. He's been racing since before he could walk.

If racing games accurately portrayed driving a race car, we would all suck.

When did anyone ever say this? It does not take a lifetime to be proficient with F1 racing as most are in their 20 and 30s. What kind of racing could a non walking infant possibly do?

Most people do suck at the more realistic sims, there are several of us who can understand the dynamics and limits of a car in a realistic setting and who can manuver a virtual car with a fair amount of success.

If you are 20 or 30 years old, that is your lifetime. I was merely saying that they have been driving for their entire lives. As for the walking comment, it was obviously an exaggeration.

So I will say it again. Realism is only good up to a point. If driving an F1 car in a video game were exactly like driving one in real life, neither you, nor I, nor anyone else on these boards would be able to do it without many years of practice. If you disagree with that statement, you are saying that you are good enough to be a professional F1 driver. Forgive me if I seriously doubt that you are.

PGR2 and NSFU games are in no way trying to be GT clones. Both are clearly designed to be over the top FUN-to-drive games though not AS over the top as say Burnout. The tuning in NFSU2 is actually fairly intuitive if you give it half a chance.

Did you read me saying they were clones of GT? I think not. I was simply stating what I like and why. Over the top color scemes and more neon than a night club don't interest me, good racing games do.

If you are dying when you are 30.

Lifetime
n : the period during which something is functional (as between birth and death); "the battery had a short life"; "he lived a long and happy life"

I dissagree becuase I have never tried and I suspect you have neither tried a very realistic F1 sim no actually have had any experience driving an F1 car but I do know that the more realistic a game is the more I enjoy it. Everything takes some amount of practice, some are able to pick things up faster than others.

Since you don't actually appear to understand my argument at all, I'm just going to drop it. Good luck with that realistic sim, Senna.

In your previous paragraph you accuse developers of cloning too many aspects of the Gran Turismo series. NFSU2 is not all about color schemes and neons. It is much more performance based now and quite fun if you give it a chance. The physics are much improved from the previous game which I thought was trash.

i think the main problem with ultra realism is that our hardware is still too limited.
Even with a 900degree wheel and clutch , you wont be able to control a car like you would a real one.
Also theres the problem that you just dont get the same input on your senses as you do in a real car. You dont feel the gforces, you dont have the same depth view; you cant see 360degrees around you, you dont hear other cars behind you like you would in real life etc etc.
All of those factors mean that gamedevelopers have to strike a balance between realism and playability.
As hardware evolves higer levels of realism will become more playable.

Just my 2 cts

I agree to the point where developers only think about making a game to sell to the mainstream. Thankfully we have a handfull who are willing to give the hardcore sim heads what they want and that is the most realistic sim technically possible.

I remember reading when Colin McRae played his game he did so in third perso view which I thought was odd. The reason he said he did this is becuase he couldnt see to the left or right enough in first person and he wished he had 2 more screens to the side. Camera movent based on trakcing your head movement via a webcam seems like best alternative to using 3 screens. I have heard that GTR and RBR on the PC have already implimented this technology though I have yet to try it myself.

I'm willing to learn though. How are you supposed to progress in something you can do easily? Raise the difficulty. And the best way to do that in a racing sim is increasing the realism in my opinion.

I don't care if it becomes harder due to lacking hardware and missing specific sensory stimulation: I want my racing sims to be as realistic as possible. I want to grit my teeth into them and beat them into submisision, no matter how many laps it takes.

Personally I can't imagine a point in racing sims where they are too realistic to be fun, because I derive the fun EXACTLY from the realism.

Enthusia sounds like a dissease
It looks quite good but i cant see it being better than GT4, but since GT4 will probally be delayed another 9 years it dosnt really matter

its not that it will be better, its that it will be more focused on realism than catering to the mainstream audience supposedly. :)

Well it's nice to see there are a bit more open-minded users here than uber-GT fanboys.

I loved the arguement towards the beginning of the thread that the game may not be fun becuase it's getting to real.

This probably coming from the same people who refuse to use anything but simulation tires. The same people also purposely pick comparable cars for some competition in the races. Why do these people do it? It's a challenge and therefore more entertaining and rewarding.

The GT series does a good job with car handling and physics but I hope we all know that they still dumb it down a bit. We use sim tires and all that jazz to make the game more fun.

This is the first I've heard anything about enthusia. I'm very excited to play it, whenever it comes out. I don't care how many cars it has, so long as they don't put 43 skylines in the game, I'll be pleased. I also don't care much for car tuning, mostly because I don't have the patience for it. I like having a car and learning how to drive it, not changing it to drive how I like.

I can't wait, sounds like a promising game! :)

Enthusia and forza suck!!!
gt4 rules forever!!! (until gt5....LOL)

wow with a post like that I have no choice but to believe in your well though, well explained and rational argument.

/end sarcasm

I wouldn't mind playing this game at alll
that steering wheel they have in the demo video looks sweet, the larger wheel is more than welcome
Maybe I can take out the momo wheel from my car and put it on

It also looked as if the wheel had much less resistance than the Logitech wheel. Maybe it doesn't have force feedback, or maybe it uses another method for force feedback.

i wish admins would do a better job at banning people for making retarded comments, or maybe a probation thing where u cant post anyting for a week? Probation sounds like a good idea, eh?

It could be a bodykitted DFP. The same torque with a larger wheel diameter results in less force at the point of application.

Actually I'm very interested in that wheel as well. Looking to upgrade my Momo Racing and I think I will hold off the DFP purchase until after I had the chance to get some in-depgth information and opinions on the Enthusia one.

I'm gonna stand by what I said before in another thread. The cars in Enthusia look really good, as does the track surface, however; the background scenery only looks about as good as GT3. Go to the screnshots at that link and look at the screenshot of the STi and Evo on the first page. The rock wall behind the cars doesn't look very realistic and is clearly inferior to the scenery in GT4.

I think this game is going to be really slick. Focused totally on physics and how a car would react. Great concept. By negating the infinitely tricky setup options, they can more realistically reproduce driving dynamics. Basically, they took out one of the biggest variables. You know, many times you here people saying, "I want a game where I can drive a car that I own or could actually buy. And I want the cars to handle like the one I would buy!" Well, here it is, Enthusia.

i agree, but hopefully the physics will be "too realistic" as the Dev's of gran turismo have said. thats all im hoping for. :) o.. and good driving force pro support also. i dont feel like buying another wheel just to play Enthusia. But.. i saw a pic of it being played with the DFP....

I'm waiting Enthusia for a long time now... I saw the first trailer last year and I got simply hooked by the extremely real suspension dynamics shown. The cars roll over the suspension on a very realistic way and the Pajero/Montero and VW Touareg jumps shown how advanced the suspension model is.

Of course it is gonna be compared to the almighty GT, but, if realistic handling is the word, I'm in! We all know GT is very, very good. But it's not the "real driving simulator" it claims to be.

The most realistic racing experience on production cars I've had until now is Live for Speed on the PC running with a DFP and locking the steer angle at 720°. It is simply superb (haven't got GTR, so I can't say anything about it).

It would be great to have a very accurate simulation on a console and I hope Enthusia can do it. It's not everyone's bag, but I bet it can become a strong success between serious racing fans.

When is it due out?

The release is March.

IMO, I think GT4 finally found an extremely worthy opponent on the PS2 and Sim world. The fact of reviewer's saying, "It may be a little too realistic..." is a good thing in my eyes. I mean, the closer to reality, the better. 👍
