I'm stuck..can't make a good decision, even after reading a good 4 dozen reviews..

I THINK i'm going with the 4000, and probably OC it....but i'm still having my doubts....Considering gaming is more than likely going to move over to multithreading soon..

How can we help? You either get a more expensive but more powerful chip, or the less expensive less powerful chip.
Personally if you're going to OC a chip you may as well save a few £ and get the 3800.

The X2's aren't really designed for gaming.

If you're solely going to be gaming, you may as well get a high end single core chip. If you're going to be burning CDs and gaming at the same time, you may as well get a dual core.

ACtually the price difference is almost insignifigant at the moment..

The diff is about 40 dollars...Considering the total money spent..I can spend it..

From what I read on single threaded apps..

A 3800 runs like a 3200..Which isn't what i'm looking for..

but on multi threaded apps and newer games it probably shines over the 4000....

And i've also heard that an OC'ed 4000 is about equal to a FX-57...

p.s. F.E.A.R. = multi threaded..

As is Quake Wars: Enemy territory supposed to be..

I don't know about UT07 though

those 3 games = priority

What's your absolute price limit? Also, what other components do you have? It doesn't pay to get a highly expensive CPU if you only have integrated graphics.

My opinion is get the 3800+ X2. Things are suppose to start utilising multi thread soon. I think the new Windows Vista is suppose to be multi threaded?

Plus at this point, most if not all current single threaded games will run more than good enough on even a 3200+.

Btw, how much RAM are you getting?

2 gigs, nice. That would last you quite a while.

For motherboards, I recommand that you get a board with nforce4 SLI so you have a SLI board in case you want to put in another 7800 GTX when prices go down, at least what's what I'm doing and I think it's a good idea...

Anyways, for motherboards, I'm looking at an ASUS A8N-SLI. It uses Socket 939, so will be compatible with either processor, and it's SLI. Plus you can get one for around $130 online. The DFI Lanparty boards are suppose to be of high quality too. If you want to spend >$100, the MSI K8N Neo4 Platnium boards are pretty good.

I have both an Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe nForce4 SLi and a Gigabyte K8N SLi. They both have onboard 8 channel audio and are socket 939 and SLi. I have had several problems with the Asus and one replacement wheras I have never had a problem with the Gigabyte.

I'd recommend the Gigabyte K8N SLi or Gigabyte K8N Pro SLi. They may be half an fps slower than the Asus equivelents but they are more reliable and cost less too.

2048....2 1gigs..

any advice on a good board too...nforce4 preferably....ultra if recommended
I have the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum which uses the nForce 4 Ultra chipset. It's a great board. I'd recommend the SLI version of it though if your getting the 7800.

The Dual Core is mainly aimed at:

Vid Editing
Audio Editing
Photo Editing
3D Graphics Designers for like Car Designers and stuff.

Right TVR...but in the coming years(Which is how long i'll have my proc)..More and more games are going to be multithreaded apps....Since the more info you can crunch at once..the more info you can throw out...which means better games..

That was just my major concernt..

but hearing you can OC a 4000 to be on par with a FX57....There's no doubt which one i'm chosing..

as far as Mobo's..

I've also read that people are having conflicts with their Asus boards..

they are either getting Abits, or Gigabytes...I'll probably op for the GB..unless the abit has a nicer colored one

Sorry to hijack the thread?

What are some of the problems that was showing up with the Asus boards?

what i read is all the Asus' using the VIA chipset...are having conflict problems....

like Mostly people having problems running certain programs...with certain CPU's and what not....I've read their VIA chipsets are not doin so hot.....

And I personally would just go for the more major/worldwide company...

Asus's kinda big here in the states...
but Abit's much bigger..

And i think abit's quality might just be a tad higher..

Unreliability, Ultra-unreliable USB sockets, a major problem with the clock being unable to keep the time properly, and dodgy onboard sound (its supposed to be 8 channel).

Thats about it.

When it works its great, however there are far too many times when it doesnt work.
