European Speed limits?

I was driving to school yesterday and iwas doing about 75 mph on 95 and noticed that 75 mph was about 120 km/h. I'm sure my speedometer is the most accurate tool but It gave a me a ball park figure.

I was wondering what kind of speedlimits do you guys have across the pond?

Over here interstates are between 55 mph to 70 mph, anything that's not an intersate can have a max speed limit of 55 mph. Only interstates can go higher. Atleast that's the case in Virginia. Residential roads are usually 25 mph. And the rest of them vary within that 55 mph limit. Most are about 45 mph around where I live.
 
United Kingdom National Speed Limits:
Residential/Urban single carriageway - 30mph (unless otherwise posted)
Residential/Semi Urban single carriageway - 40mph (unless otherwise posted)
Residential/Extra Urban single carriageway - 60mph (unless otherwise posted)
Dual Carriageway (lanes separated by dividing barrier) - 70mph (unless otherwise posted)

Speed limits can also be posted at 20mph and 50mph, but the National Speed Limits for the types of roads mentioned above are as mentioned above if there is no sign otherwise.
 
while im not european i sure your interested in australia as well...

Residential 50kph (school zone 40kph)
In city 60kph
City main road 70 or 80kph
Highway 80kph or 90kph or 100kph
Dual lane highway 110kph

Northern territory didnt have a speed limit but apparently now its restricted to 130kph for no reason as no one died on the roads, at least that i saw on the news.
 
Speed limits vary from state to state. In Washignton, all freeways (interstate or not) are 60 in the city and in the country, all freeways are usually 70 and roads are 55-60. In Michigan, the speed limits around here are 70 and 45 to 55 for major roads if you are in a town or not.

Over in France, and I'm sure the same is true for other countries, the speed limit is 130 kph, which amounts to around 83 mph.
 
I assume speed limits also vary between members of the EU?

yes, Americans have a kilometers per hour ring inside the miles per hour ring in cars, for those of you who didn't know...it's numbered for every 20 kph on my vehicle.

On most newer vehicles there is a button to push now that switches over the speedometer to kph.

Down here in NZ, we're similar to Australia.

Open Road/Highway/Motorway: 100kph
City main road: 70kph
City road: 50kph

There are also speed limits applied at the 60kph, 80kph, and I think even 90kph intervals, but I see no logic to where these are applied and where they aren't.

And Small_Fryz, I think there were a lot of people dying on NT roads weren't there? But these deaths were attributed to alcohol and fatigue, etc. Not speed. It's sad they imposed speed limits.

Depends... Seems like everyone goes faster the closer you get to Detroit. You'd figure it would be the other way around!

Up where I'm at in Michigan there are speed limits in town and on the main roads but other than that there aren't any posted speed limits.

I haven't gotten my car out here yet. I wouldn't really know. I guess drivers are pretty unruly here. I've seen one person pulled over in my stay here.

Really? Up in the UP (seeing that your profile says Minnesota)? I thought Montana was the last state with unrestricted roads when they put up speed limits in 1999.
 
Is it true you're allowed to overtake on the right (or rather: undertake) on the motorway/highway in the US?

I wouldn't know...never had anything newer than a 92 for more than a month.

It is. It isn't recommended, and I hate it but it is legal.

I guess it is nice when you're in traffic and have a gap to the right or when there is the classic grandpop in his Buick going 5 under with the left signal on in the left lane.

Haha well I'm from Minnesota but going to school up in the UP and there are a few roads that don't have posted speed limits on them!
 
iv never quite understood why most tight quiet little country lanes have a national limit on them, it would be nuts to do those speeds on em. iv noticed while the standard limits tend to be stuck to by all around residential areas and the like, the motorway seems to be a total pick-your-own-limit free for all :odd: 90 seems to be the general favourite for those drivers who think the limit doesnt apply to them, pretty much everyone lol

As a Texan, I see it every day. You can overtake in any lane on either side. People on the GWB Turnpike will speed to pass all the time even if the possibility of succeeding is small. Just as long as you get by....
 
Miami seems to like to pass on the right, I recall that being an issue when I was down there the last few times. On the last trip when I had the Town Car I got the hang of it, and by the end of the day, I fit in just find with the old New York Jew in the DTS next to me...

Are you sure those aren't 30 like the other "30 unless otherwise posted" streets? In Washington that's a state law so they can save a bunch of money on signs.

If it's not posted in Michigan it's technically 55mph.
 
Yah that's usually what I stay at is 55 unless it's posted or if it's a neighborhood road.

How would you enforce a 30mph limit?

There's not much traffic on small country lanes, and the traffic that does use them usually has the common sense not to exceed 35-40mph. Even if you do slide off the road, chances are you'll end up in a nice soft hedge rather than a lamp post/concrete wall/bus stop full of people.

As the guys of Top Gear politely put it: "If the Germans limit their roads, what's the point of Germany then?"

In Finland:
Motorway:
120/100 km/h (100 in winter)
Open road:
80/60 km/h
Town:
60/50/40/30 km/h

The 30 km/h is quite rare, as is 60.

Oh yea. I do it all of the time. I wouldn't if people actually followed drive "rules" better. In va there are always idiots just riding in the left lane holding people up, so I pass them on the right if I get the chance. If I never get the chance I flash em with my high beams and they either move over or give me the bird. In europe you turn you left turn signal on to signal somebody to move over, correct?

I think Germany recently passed a law allowing people to flash their lights again to get people to move over. Other than that, in places where everybody is at about the same speed, the law keeps order by forcing drivers to keep right as much as possible to stay out of the way of anybody that would pass you.
