Racing games. We at GTP love them, aye!

There are many racing games. Some are brilliant. Some are total garbage. The most critically acclaimed ones are usually from Polyphony, Codemasters, Turn 10, or some other well established company. But occasionally we might find a little gem from a smaller company that, although it might not be as well done or polished than Gran Turismo 6, still has an appeal to it.

That's what this thread is about. Have you ever come across a racing game that, although it wasn't exactly great, still kept you quite entertained for a good few hours / days?

For me, that little gem is Hummer Badlands. :)

It's essentially a glorified advert for Hummer, so of course didn't get much attention from critics. But someone gave me a copy, and I quite enjoy it! It's got a modest selection of around 20 Hummers, with about six unlockable special ones. There are six racing locations, each with distinct handling and characteristics (The slippery ice and snow of Colorado, the muddy jungles of Peru, etc). And there's a bunch of other miscellanious challenges like river crossing and rock climbing!

The graphics aren't cutting edge, but aren't horrible either. The fact that it features unlockables and secret routes provides plenty of reward for progression, and it has that classic PS2 game feel to it!

My favourite thing about it is you can technically free roam the maps. All you do is start a time trial in the location you choose, turn off the HUD (So you don't get any Wrong Way warnings) and you're free to go wherever you please!

So yeah, what's your hidden gem?

Corvette Evolution GT isn't a game about Corvettes, it's a simulation aimed game that delivered quite well for me. Its the one game that i've played that featured rain on Laguna Seca. Speaking of rain, this game simulated aquaplaning, which proved to be quite interesting.

I'm not sure how hidden or gemlike the game is but Milestone's Superstars V8 was surprisingly entertaining for me as a snack to consume between Forzas and GTs, esp. the timed challenges.

I extend this to the next challenge version as well. Was great racing Jaguar S-Types and Vauxhall VXR8s, interesting tracks as well.

Grand Prix Challenge on PS2 was a very underrated F1 game.

N.Gen Racing put a spin on futuristic powerup-based racing by basing it around real world modern fighter aircraft you can upgrade and customize. To keep things interesting, it had a gameplay mechanic (explained by an in-universe racing regulation) that limited your top speed according to altitude, so it was fastest to keep low, flying through valleys and skirting over hills. As a late PSX game, its graphics were a fine accomplishment for its platform, and it had a nice soundtrack. It also played well, offering a choice between "Arcade" controls and "Pro" controls depending on your familiarity with flight games/sims.

Much as I love obscure racing games isn't this very similar to this pretty active thread?
