External hard-drive, under $100, at least 200 Gigs...what do I get?

I had a 160 GB Acom Data like that one for 3 years, and did not have any data corruption issues. I then sold it to my buddy and he has been using it for about 8 months now.

I used it as basically the primary data storage, it was on 24x7 for those 3 years and very much in use.

So I can vouch for the reliability of that brand....can't say anything else about other brands, except for the standards, Seagate, Maxtor, and WD, which have all treated me okay for internal HDs.
 
Don't buy an external hard drive.

Get an external enclosure like this one. You can take any IDE hard drive up to 500GB's and it would fit perfectly in there. The speed is the same as a regular hard drive too I believe so it won't take as long to copy or paste or transfer large files. I use this as my backup and data external enclosure. A lot better than external hard drive.

Might I also add that you can change the hdd's any time you want? You can't do that with a regular external enclosure :D
 
Speed would be the same because it is limited by the USB interface and not the HD read speed.
 
Not what I've noticed. Cause the external 120GB I had a while back before it crashed, was a lot slower on the old system and I tried my external enclosure on my old system too with the new 120GB and it was a lot faster.

And I got to change out the HDD in this external enclosure twice already :)
 
I have external enclosure as well. It's pretty handy if you need the data to travel around AND you don't have to open the case. If you have USB2.0 in your computer, you should be happy with the transfer speed, but it sucks with USB1.1
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll take that advise about the external enclosure.
