Hey guys,

I started writing a column as an F1 commentary on my myspace page, ghastly as that is. I decided to move it to a slightly more respectable location. I have spoken to one of the mods and had some preliminary approval, but undoubtedly the content will be subject to regular review for appropriateness and of course, interest.

Being an Aussie Webber's career interests me greatly. Don't get me wrong, I didn't just jump on the band wagon.I've been staying up late for F1 since the early 80's I love it!!!
Mark just seems to be so unlucky,and I believe we make our own luck, but some of the luckless luck is unbelievable.

Many things can be discussed here,but I don't want to just ramble on,conversation is what this is all about yaknow,throwing ideas and opinions out there.

I'd like to think this will kick-off.

World motorsport is a hard thing to get here, unless either the elite level or pay t.v.The only event I can recall, was Le Mans when he flipped the "Merc",even then we got a an ad filled hour of highlights.So to answer your question no.


What's your call on the upcoming inaugeral Singapore Grand Prix? I'd have to say I'm a little sceptical,considering the unexciting European Grand Prix. Seems like a very similar circuit, in the way of design, slow corners mixed with medium to high speed resulting in single file procession.Unable to take risks as this is a street circuit,with blind half throttle down shifting to tightening apexes,leaves very little excitement for the veiwer. This being said aero changes next season could bring these two circuits into their own. I think they would be great as driver circuits.

I've just uploaded the latest entry entitled "Who Will Make It To F1?". It's a look at all the possible hopefuls vying for future race drives from GP2, the Euroseries and beyond. I've even added a picture! :sly:

Certainly I think the Singapore GP will be a much more visually attractive spectacle than the European GP. As for the racing, there's a real possibility of rain and that usually guarantees some sort of excitement and standout performance.

Turn 10 seems to be causing some concern anbd might act as something of a car-breaker. There are definitely enough unknowns to attract a lot of viewers and interest, and for F1's sake I hope it turns out better than Valencia did, and minus the post-race decision making by the stewards too.

Good article, if a bit long :sick:. Just to discuss though. I always hoped that Adam Carrol would win an F1 seat, being Irish. After his 2007 season I thought he had a chance, but now he's moved to A1GP and seems to have dropped off the F1 radar. Will there be any hope for him in the future?

As for the Singapore GP, I doubt it will be much better then Valencia unless it rains. But then again I am looking forward to the fact that it is at night, there will be some great photos from it.

Haha and there was me thinking it was shorter the last couple of weeks :D

As for Carroll, he was a Honda test driver and was dropped a couple of years ago from that position I think around the same time as Andy Van Der Merwe was dropped. Could have been a result of the restrictions they were due to impose on testing mileage. Considering Carroll won a number of races in the first GP2 season (at places like Monaco no less) against what is probably considered the strongest GP2 field so far (Rosberg, Kovalainen, Piquet, Premat etc)...I think he fully deserved a regular F1 testing role and eventually a race seat.

Isn't he Ireland's only A1GP winner as well? Maybe budget has also affected his opportunities, I remember he had issues with sponsorship in GP2.

Yeah, he won in Mexico, I think it was. And he was doing really well in China, on for 2nd of 1st, before he damaged his nose cone trying to overtake India. Unless he was to have a fantastic season in A1 next year and then go back to GP2 I doubt any of the F1 bosses will notice him.

Even then, if he won the title at GP2, he could end up like Pantano. A lot of experience at that level sometimes takes the shine off a champion because people expect him to win. Those that make it to F1 have a certain aura of hype and big backing behind them, they appear to need to have the image of someone who came, saw, conquered and is ready for the big time, with the championship itself being a formality.

I am in agreement with you though, if he wins A1GP, then does a full season in GP2 and wins that championship which I am sure he can, he deserves F1 attention.

Great column, but I disagree that the Singapore GP was anything great. Sure, it was quite the spectacle, but it was a crappy race. Any track that limits passing this much sucks IMO. I'm also not a huge fan of street courses, with the exception of Albert Park - Melborne, and Monaco. IMO, Valencia and Singapore were boring. Valencia had the smoother track surface, but from the drivers persective was just an endless maze of concrete barriers and chain link fence. Singapore had a rediculously bumpy surfice, idiotic pit entrance & exit, and a poorly thought out track in general (just look at turn 10).

I'm really worried when I here Bernie Eccelstone and Flavio Briatore commenting that we need more races like Singapore. They just like the glitz and glamour of an urban event, and the abilityto literaly walk from their luxury hotel suite to the paddock.

I much preffer races were the track provides a more technical challenge to the drivers. I like smooth tracks, with at least a few places to pass. To me, tracks like the Nurburgring (Sudschleife of course), Spa, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and Suzuka (just to name a few) are far superior to Valencia and Singapore.

And no, this has nothing to do with me liking Ferrari, cuz I don't.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Agreed completely, I don't think they will be getting rid of the circuits just yet, but it is worrying when a lot of the recent new tracks are mostly street circuits....
Singapore was saved by the safety car and more drama at Ferrari. Valencia was almost the same, except no safety car came there because it wasn't a particularly difficult track, still some Ferrari drama...but the point is, the tracks should be able to hold good racing without the need for safety cars, and if they can't do that, somethings wrong.

The fact that Trulli and Fisichella could hold up the entire field so easily pretty much points out the problem with Singapore.
 
You both make really good points, but do you think next year's slicks and revised aerodynamic profiles will make overtaking more frequent at Singapore? They'll undoubtedly revise the pit entrance and turn 10 kerbing...could be a lot better next year. You must admit it looked much more visually appealing than Valencia did.

How an event "looks" is of little consequence, though the cars at night in Singapore were stunning. The racing is everything, and this season has shown that we can still have that in spades, with races like Italy, Canada, and Belgium proving that. I'm not opposed to the expansion of Formula One into new markets, but I don't think that street circuits are, or should be the future.
 
It's official BMW have resigned Heidfeld along with Kubica, don't know where that leaves Alonso though.I can only guess he stay with Renault, can't see him going elsewhere. Renault have improved over the season,with results anyway,possibly been working hard on testing for next season.

Good job on the columns, they're very professional-like written. 👍

I'm very excited for the Singapore GP. I want to know if the track surface be less bumpy and the modifications to some corners lead to more overtaking.

Anyway, I think that race will be good for Ferrari and McLaren, in the sense that there aren't much high-speed corners like the hungaroring. On the other hand, Rubens was very good in Valencia, which had kind of thesame corners. He got alot of advice from Massa, and for this GP he will get it too. I wonder if he's going to win this one too.

Those who are supporting Rubens will also be greatly heartened to see him defeat a resurgent Button in the final races of the season and really wrap up the title in style. Valencia-style, Monza-style. Jenson had the last (unintentional) Monza laugh though when he inadvertently questioned the sexual persuasion of the second Lesmo corner during the TV press conference. Watch and listen carefully to the world feed at around 2’33.

Nah not really, I figured I'd left the write up so late that it would be interesting to focus on the main outcome of the event instead of the little bits that have been probably covered elsewhere.

So you think it would be more beneficial to have focused more on the race events in detail and left a separate column for Jenson's title thoughts?

I just thought it would be interesting to hear your opinion on the events in the action-packed race. But what you have written about is probably covered in many places around the world too. Maybe you can have two columns, one for the race and the other one for what's happening off track, and the championships. (kinda like you have done now 👍)
