I'm hoping some of the other racers can offer me a bit of encouragement here. Possibly a bit of experience as well. Least of all I don't want to sound like I'm bragging.

Some of you have seen my compendium and know that I'm on the final leg of the tour. This being the F1 championship.

Since a big event hangs in the balance (4 cars in one swoop) I entered it with a car I was comfortable in, the F094/S. Well as it turns out, I'm slaughtering the competition. Lapped the entire field twice at midfield (lapped one AI 3 times).

At Seattle, It wasn't such a bad blow out, as I only lapped the leader once, every other AI Twice. Next up is Grand Valley, which is likely to kick on my oil light, and offer another blow out.

What I'm wondering is how many of you out there have run the F1 championship (winning all ten races) in a car other than an F1?

I've got an R390 LM car in the garage, and was wondering how many have done it in this particular car?

A driver of your calibre should be getting results like this. I only had significant difficulties with the last race, and that was simply a setup issue (ensure that there's no toe on the rears).

Haven't tried it with a GT car, although I know some have, vat_man for one.

I got a start in the series, and will come back to it - with a decent set-up the fully boosted R390 can certainly run with the AI F1 cars - its only weakness is on cold tyres (you'll need to run the superhard slicks) - I won the first couple of events fairly comfortably. Tyre strategy can confer a big advantage.

I also beat Formula GT by a good margin but nothing like yours. I believe I lapped everyone on Midfield, but for the rest of them I managed to lap everyone but second place which was another F094/S. See what F1's you are up against because the AI Fo94/S that raced me in Formula GT was a good lap in front of the 3rd place car for most of the races. So, I imagine that if you lucked out in a field of F1's that didnt include the F094/S or F094/H this race would be extremely easy.

WD der alta, if ya blitzed them in that car maybe you should try it in a PT cruiser :p

I didnt get that far b4 my restart so i havent raced it :/

i dun think its possible in a GT-one ROAD car... prolly better if race.... cuz tell ya truth... road car ain't that good... in comparison w/ the other race calibre cars...

Bringing this back to the top.

Giles, as for cailber, you've beaten me handily on more than a couple of occasions. Would you consider attempting this race in an R390?

Vat_man: you said that you've run the first few races, but have you finished the series? I'd be very interested to see hwo the races play out for you, as I can judge my time off of you. Thanks.

I'm starting to think that I won't be able to do all ten races in the R390, but I think that I can win the series.

On a further note, I have finally finished the compendium, and have hit 100%. Long time coming, and the final piece is to post up the compendium for others.

This is a brutal endevor. I was going to attempt it in the 787B, but I quickly realized that staying ahead of the F094/S was going to be more work than I was up for. I wouldn't have to win all 10 races, but I had to win 5 and get second in the rest ... hoping that the AI F094/S wasn't taking first in all the other races. As I recall, I barely beat it on the last lap of the first race and decided not to continue.

Any of the three big GT cars should be competative, but it's going to be a hard faught series.

I read a post on granturismo.com where someone had raced and beaten the f1 series in a 1200hp r390. He said that it was a fun challenge until the last four races where the CPU HP+/Player HP- had really taken effect. Hope this helps. If others have done it I'm sure you can too.

OK, a sucker for a challenge, I went for it. I don't have an R390GT1 Race Car, so I went for the Toyota GT-One Race Car. Slapped on some super-slicks, and a Stage 4 Turbo (1,350 bhp) and headed off to GVS.

I have to say that my driving was pretty awful, probably because I was concerned about maximising pace everywhere, I was guilty of over-driving on a fairly serious level. Also, it's quite an idiosyncratic car to drive, being enormously throttle-sensitive, and really only seeming to have any grip at the front end when it's either hard on the gas or hard on the brakes, making the transition from brakes to throttle tricky in terms of cornering line.

Nonetheless, one works with one's tools, so off I went...

ASM was switched off, and I pegged TCS back to 2, just to curb the wild excesses of wheelspin that such an enormous amount of power gives. I maxed out the downforce at front, and increased the rear proportionally to give the same ratio of front:rear. The car was still easily able to power through 360km/h on the main straight, so this wasn't too much of an issue.

My fastest qualifying lap was 1:38.xxx, some 7 seconds off the pace of the Polyphony001. In the race, I was ragged as anything, but when the tyres were properly bedded-in, I was running in the 1:37.2xx range, which was nice. Interestingly, this is still 6s off the pace, but in the first sector, which is really only the hairpin turn 1, I was 0.5s faster than the 001.

In the race, as I say, I wasn't performing at my best, and I was a minute down after 14/27 laps, so it wasn't looking too good!

On strategy, I was looking to change tyres at the end of the 14th lap, by which time all the F1s had pitted twice. On this basis, you need to run your race no more than a minute slower than the F1s to make the strategy work for you. It's definitely possible, but I was driving so pooly that on my 5th trip into the gravel at a hairpin (braking too late AGAIN!!), I gave up in disgust. Maybe I'll try again later.

Giles: Congrats for giving it a run.

This is one thing that is on my "to do" list. I'm interested to hear that you think given proper control, you might be able to use strategy to over come the F1's.

I'll keep this in mind when I attempt it. I don't have a Gt-one car in the garage, only the R390 at the moment. One of my other game saves has the GT-one, wo I may very well give it a try.

I think a lot of his has to do with the long straights. Sure, the F1s win on weight and drag, but once you get up to 200km/h, you're really looking for more power, and that's where the big GT cars will win, because they're all over 1000 bhp. At somewhere like Laguna, or SSR5 or Deep Forest, I would predict that the F1s would annhiliate the GTs.

Also, remember that the three top GT cars in the game (R390, GT-One and 787B) were all created for Le Mans, which is quite similar in character to Grand Valley.

Hey, DA! Great job on the 100% and the completion of the compendium! It's been a great help to many people.

I tried Mid-Field Raceway with the Esperante GTR-1, and kept getting my butt kicked. At some point, I'll try the ALTEZZA LM Race car...

But I gave the first race a go in the R390 GT-1 LM Race Car (individual race, non-series), and after 2 spinouts, eeked out a 11" win over the F094/S (I just saved the replay). Here are the upgrades/settings:

+ Turbo Kit/Stage 4
+ Racing Tires/Super-Slick
+ Oil Change

Spring Rate - F: 16.1, R: 14.0
Ride Height - F: 55 mm, R: 55 mm
Toe Angle - F: 0.0, R: -1.0
Brake Balance - F: Level 12, R: Level 15
Limited-slip Accel - F: 0, R: 35
Gear Ratio - Auto Setting: Level 41
Downforce - F: 0.84, R: 1.01
ASM - Level 9
TCS - Level 4

1205 hp, 0.0 miles to start the race.

After about 15 qualifying laps (quitting after 8 to change the settings), I managed to pole with something like a 1.00.0XX. Two laps later, the F686/M poles with a sub-minute lap. I managed a 59.317 or .371 during the race, but I haven't watched the replay yet...

The AI pit schedule seemed similar, if not exactly the same as your and my previous runs, but I need to watch the replay to confirm. I pitted only once, after completing lap 19 (one lap after the F094/S pitted). My tires at the time were dark yellow (not yet orange).

Starting the launch in 2nd, I was in last place coming out of the first turn. I then hit the wall coming into the first tunnel (again, on the first lap) and spun out... Down +10" at the second checkpoint. I kept pluggin, and eventually whittled it down to a 5" deficit by the time the F094/S made its first pit stop.

After which, my lead extended to around 14", but the F094/S managed to overtake me again around lap 16. For the next 2 laps, we'd bang into eachother, and trade the lead during the straights and turns. Coming into the final straight for lap 18, I had the lead and was looking for the F094/S in the rear-view mirror. I saw that he had moved to my right, and at that point I realized I had forgotten to pit with him. I extended the lead back to 18", but exited the pits (on lap 20) down 4". When he pitted for the final time, I took the lead and didn't give it up (even after spinning out again).

The F090/S, F687/S, and F688/S finished a lap down.

I'm gonna try the next one (Seattle) with the same settings, but I'll have to test the others without the oil change (I think the oil light should come on somewhere on lap 9 of Grand Valley)...

Anyway, congrats again on the 100%, and let us know what you find!

Have a great drive,

Hazzard

I had completely forgotten to get back to this.

Thanks for brining it back up RH.

Looks like this weekend is starting to fill back up again.

The only race I have run with a Big GT car is the Test course. I know, it's unfair to be able to run 40 MPH faster than the F1's. But the Test Course is pure torture!
I think the proper person/people to ask aobut running this in the R390 are Mr. P and JBSchumacher.
If anyone could do it (easily) they could.
DA, I second the opinion voiced above. You and Boombexus have whooped up on me in several comps. You guys could probably take this with 7 or 8 out of 10. The truly awful courses would be Test Course and SSR-11. Monaco would be difficult on fatigue factor. But it is kinda fun in an F1 car.
