instead of giving test and back up drivers a simple free practice drive its high time that F1 go further and institute a wild card entry system(similiar to that of MotoGP or WSBK) where these drivers could get a spot on the grid via the teams they happen to be associated with....its a good way of giving these drivers real world, top-level experience while assessing their ability in a real world situation.

I would enjoy that.

Supposedly 26 cars can run, so I'd love it, personally.

I think wildcard entries should not count for constructor points, or there'd be a lot of controversy there. However, seeing the likes of Carlos Sainz Jr. or Stoffel Vandoorne debuting in a third car would be great to see.

It's too messy. It could easily be abused by teams strategically entering wildcards to interfere with the championship bids of other drivers. What if, for example, Daniel Ricciardo was able to close in on Hamilton and Rosberg because they kept squabbling with one another? Mercedes could easily enter a third car under the vestige of giving a promising rookie - say, Esteban Ocon - with the intention of having him interfere with Ricciardo's race, preventing him from scoring enough points to stay in the title fight.

How is that fair?

I don't think it would be worth the extra money to the teams to run another car for a weekend, MotoGP and WSBK is a lot cheaper than F1.

It wouldn't cost much to run a 3rd car. It's already there as a spare - just not put together. They used to have fully ready spare cars for both drivers in the 80's and one to share in the 90's.

It would also increase the pay driver money the back of the grid teams use by 50%.
