There's an interesting article at http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns05125.html regarding Vodaphone's losses and the cost of their sponsorship of Ferrari.

There was a comment toward the end of the article,

'However the Sunday broadsheet then goes on to say "For that they could have a team named after them - and a big team at that. Orange got a much better deal commercially with the Arrows F1 team for £80 million," which equals $116m.

Not a considered comment, one would have thought, bearing in mind the relative status of the Ferrari and Arrows team - nor the amount of global TV time they respectively command.'

Now, I don't know about you, but I am a lot more conscious of Orange's sponsorship of Arrows than I was of Vodaphone's Ferrari support (in fact, I thought they were still with Benetton!).

I'd be interested to hear other people's comments.

I am American, guess if I have ever heard of Vodaphone more than maybe once or twice before. Poor Voda.

I guess they would have payed that sum because Ferrari is the biggest team with the most fans and the most tv coverage. It is also better for publicity purposes to have your brand name on Michael Schumacher rather than Enrique Bernoldi. But looking at it another way the Vodafone logos aren't really going to show up on the Ferraris as they are already red and Malrboro will command the majority of the advertising space on the car but from Oranges point of view, they are the title sponsor of Arrows so the Arrows cars are Orange and they get the best advertising space on the cars.

Actually, I think the last time I saw Vodafone's logo was on one of the banners around the track...I didn't know they sponsored a team at all!

I can only imagine how much money Marlboro is paying Ferrari...

The only reason that Vodafone are in F1 is Vodafone bought D2 who sponsored what used to be the Bennetton team at the start of the last season and they put their name [Vodafone] on the car instead of the D2 brand.

I don't think Marlboro pay as much as Vodafone are even though they are the title sponsor, have the best advertising space and have the Ferraris painted in the Marlboro red. Two thirds of the Marlboro sponsorship money is used to pay for Schumacher's salary.

The Vodafone sponsorship deal was also brokered by Marlboro because they can't sponsor Ferrari after 2006.

Well done Jordan - you picked up my point!

I think Orange have got great value for money with Arrows - they may not get as much airtime, but I think the cars have a great visual impact, certainly much more than a small sticker on the Ferrari.

As I mentioned, I thought Vodaphone were still with Benetton...
