Hello everyone..Everytime I see driving on board camera in f1 grand prix I will have this question in my mind.

The head-up display in the race shows that the f1 brakes are just like an 'on/off' switch button. See these F2007 on board videos to see what I mean..watch the brakings..

Do they not ease off the brakes gradually at all before or during turn in like conventional technique? I was wondering whether will it not upset the car badly. If then, is this the right way to attack time for F2007 in GTP?

I have been looking for this answer everywhere in the internet. So I would appreciate if somebody could 'enlightened' me on this!..I know we have a very knowledgable community here..Thanks..

Well the only reason I can think of is this. Those are old videos of F1s with all the driving aids so the best way to brake as fast as possible is floor the brakes. They had very advanced abs back then. But now the new F1s have driving aids off so they have to ease on the brakes to slow down properly, to prevent wheel lock. Thats what I think.

F1 cars have never had ABS.

How do you know the indicator on screen is correct? Where does it get it's input from?

The videos are 2007 season. The thing is I saw the same thing displayed on todays Singapore GP (itv UK). The brakes showed on/off, but not the throttle. I wonder whether they are hiding the braking technique for a reason or the F1 brakes are completely different animal!!

My point is that the brake indicator on screen does not have a direct link from the brake pedal in the car and so cannot be used as a reliable indicator of how the brake is being pressed.

Though I wonder where they get this input, why there are progressive input shown for the throttle and rpm but not for the brakes? I take it that the display from the tv is misleading.... isn't it? They don't tell where the data comes from..

As far as I'm aware, they get the engine revs from the sound of the engine.

I think you're right Daan, all the on-screen data is "assumed", including the acceleration and braking bars.

I think the info they use on MotoGP when they have on-screen data is actually taken from real telemetry, in comparison.

I remember seeing gradual braking once in a while on those data screens. Maybe it also depends on how the driver uses the breaks.

They might assume gradual braking too I guess. I do remember once seeing the graphic displaying a certain driver coming smoothly onto the throttle and another stabbing at it, but again if the data is based on "hearing" the revs it could have been a clean acceleration versus wheelspin, or something.

Remember, the brake pedals arn't like a PS remote or a set of digital pedals.

It's a physical component as opposed to a digital one.

Thusly, those readings are for guidance only and not like our remotes/pedals on the GT graphs. For us, when it shows ''maximum brake'' this is travel of our remote/pedals hitting their limits!

''Maximum brake'' on an F1 or any road car is never ''maxxed'' out...unless you've got a brake circuit full of air of course ;) and then you'd reach full travel lol.

F1 brakes are incredible.

i saw the grand prix today and it smoothly showed the braking power just like the throttle so i guess they fixed that....

The reason it didnt slowly come on as the brakes came on is because the only reason it's there is to tell you that the brakes are on, they dont want to tell you that the driver is applying X amount of braking its just to tell you they are applying the brakes
